Emma I have been dealing with a very similar situation and have some advice that will help. The first step is to eliminate compression and poor spinal alignment and reduce inflammation. This means lying down as often as possible and use an ice pack on your lower back for 20 minutes at a time. Repeat up to every hour. Always walk, sit and stand with good posture, core tight, even balance, and move gently avoiding any impact. When seated sit on something very soft, like a Swiss workout ball (this will also force you to engage your core muscles). While you're still in your second trimester (I believe that once you enter the 3rd trimester you can no longer lay on your back, so I would consult your doctor on what you can do then) work on decompressing your spine by trying to elongate your body while laying down or over the swiss ball. With this and everything that follows only do so if there is no pain or nerve sensation caused by them. Some things you may have to limit your range of motion to maintain comfort. Some of the best core strengthening exercises (which will help provide support and alleviate compression of your spine and therefore prevent the disc from "slipping" and pressing on the nerves which cause you pain and numbness) are: pelvic tilts, bridges, prone cobra, reverse crunches, planks, and SB (swiss ball) crunches & back extensions. Doing the above as well as changing my mattress and shoes, going to non-traditional chiropractor & seeing an acupuncturist took me from constant pain to being able to function normally within 3 months. I also take supplements to repair nerve damage, modified my diet and do other exercises to help progressing so I can be 100% in the near future. Oh, and when lying down prop your legs up on something like a couch; this also helps decompress your spine.

I am 16 and had back surgery for 2 herniated discs about a year ago. My advice to you is use a lot of ice. I too was on a lot of meds, the best think i learned less less meds you take the better so try to take only what you absolutely need. I was also having muscle spasms and they put me on Norflex which is a muscle relaxer and it really helped! The procedure I had was a microscopic discectomy and took the pain straight away and was minimally invasive. Also try to avoid using heating pads or any heat therapy , it only inflames the area more and makes it hurt 10x worse. best of luck too you and hope you feel better!:)

I would like to give some hope to some people. I herniated my disc on 1-18-13 and although it was painful and basically sucked for 3-4 weeks I am doing much better. After I received my shot at about 3 weeks I was finally able to sleep and it helped with the pain. It does take some time, basically you have to go week by week not day by day. I went to PT for about 3 weeks which helped in the long run. I am basicallly pain free, sleeping good, no more meds and have slowly started to work about starting about 3 weeks ago. The Dr. just insisted I took my time coming back. So people hang in there, just wanted to share there is hope.

I've been feeling a lot of back pain lately, mostly because my job requires me to do a lot of heavy lifting. I'm trying to avoid any type of surgery so I've been doing a lot of physical therapy to see if it helps with the pain. There are options out there, but if the pain gets worse, I would probably talk to a doctor.
