hi, my father had a turp 4 weeks ago and all seems to be well, other than a stinging sensation when passing urine, he visited his gp who said that there was no signs of infection, the problem is that, can you trust the judgement of a gp who has to refer to the internet to find out what a turp even is, then looks well and truely lost.

i was under the impresion that the stinging should have cleared up by 4 weeks, especially when there are no signs of blood but im no expert.

he tells me that the stinging is no worse now than it was streight after the op. could anyone tell me how long this stinging may last, if its part of the recovery then thats fine, but he's worried that there may be more to it.

also he has not been taking things quite as easy as he should and i wonder if this might be part of the reason, i have suggested that he starts to try some bladder training but am not realy sure if it is safe to.

many thanks, your help would be great

Hi, I just posted my experiences elsewhere on this board, then noticed your query.

I found the stinging to be unbearable. I've checked with my GP and there's no infection or anything nasty going on, it's just caused by naturally acidic urine being passed over bits that are still sore.

Use a urine alkalizer and the pain will ease.

You can go the whole way and buy urine pH test sticks and ready made alkalizers from your drug store, or just try a couple of glasses of water with half a teaspoon of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in it. Squeezed lemon juice works too because it's strongly alkaline when digested.

Hope that helps!

i had lazer and turp surgery 9 days ago

the stinging and burning has been hard to endure, along with frequent urge to urinate

the stinging and burning starts before and continues while eliminating urine

during the night time the burning and stinging is very painful

after 9 days i feel much better and there is much less burning and stinging

yesterday i started using 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda with a glass of water, and each time i drink water i  add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda

the soda nutralizes the acid which causes the burning sensation

after 1 day of this feel 80% better

Hi, i am 75 yrs, 8 weeks ago i had a turps procedure. since then i have been with my G P twice. Been in A& E twice, was on 3 different antibiotics, all to no avail. my B P at the moment is around 170. which they tell me is a result of stress, caused by painful urination, urgent urination. The hospital tells me after blood checks and urine checks i do not have an infection, up 5 r 6 times a night, sleep broken, still suffering, would gladly appreciate any help or advice, kind regards Tommy

I’m 64 years old and had my turp 7 weeks ago the first 2 weeks after the surgery I was fine besides the blood in my urine everything seemed to be going smoothly, then the burning feeling while I pee’ed started and it showed no infection, and over the past 5 weeks it got progressively worse, the feeling of having to “go” is constant, (I have pee’ed myself twice) I’m praying that this will stop soon but had I known that this was going to happen I wouldn’t have had the procedure.
