I am a healthy 39 year old and have had the Mirena IUD for about 8 months now.  At about the 5 month point, I broke out in a very small rash of clear fluid blisters at the top of my pubic hair and my doctor said it was Shingles.  A few weeks ago, I broke out again in the same spot and this time went to my OB/GYN who also said it was Shingles but that she would test it to be sure.  After a swab and a blood test, it came back that I have HSV2, Herpes 2 virus.  I have been married for 17 years and my husband insists he has been faithful and will be tested for it this week.  From what I have been researching, I have seen several posts about people developing Herpes (1&2) after the insertion of the Mirena.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Could Mirena actually trigger the virus out of dormancy?  I have never experienced any outbreaks before in my life, so I'm thinking I must have had this for years and the Mirena is what triggered it.  It just seems odd to me that after 17 years of marriage and no problems that all of a sudden I get the Mirena and bam! . . . I now have Herpes.  Needless to say, due to several other problems on the Mirena such as severe migraines and constant bleeding, I will be having it removed.

I had a very similar situation.  At 35, after having 4 kids and LOTS of gyno appointments, I got the mirena and 4-5 months later was diagnosed with HSV.   To be fair, I was newly divorced and with a new man who is now my husband... I always assumed that he had it first and gave it to me... Although he seemed pretty shocked by the whole thing.  I've heard the virus can lay dormant for years..so it does make me wonder.  I hadn't thought about a mirena connection...?  Should be interesting to see if there are any other responses...

This is interesting. I'm a healthy 34 year old woman. I went to the doctor 2 weeks ago after experiencing a vaginal sore that was the same color as my skin. I had it 4 days. 2 weeks later I got the call that it tested positive for HSV-2. I had the Mirena IUD inserted 2 months prior and had a baby 6 months ago. I've never had any type of symptoms and am wondering how long it's been dormant. Is this something that was recently spread to me or has it been there for years and the Mirena "brought it out". I suppose I'll never know.

I had the mirena fitted 3 weeks ago, last week i developed blisters on my genitals. I have been with my partner for 7 years and i know for a fact neither of us have been with anyone else, we are a very happy and loving couple.  Since the insertion of the coil I have had really dry skin and itching all over, headaches, cramps and the bleeding is getting heaver with small clots. I wish I had never allowed the consultant to put it in. My sex life is rubbish now because of this. I am feeling really low now and want to have it removed. My doctors arn't much good at expalining, will i always have genital herpes for the rest of my life. It must have layed domant in me or my partner, I really don't know.

I feel the same way about the iud I had inserted 2 years ago and had to remove it before I made a year with it, due to really bad hip pain on one side . Then after removing it , I all of a sudden had bacterial vaginosis 4 times since the removal , and then candidiasis , and then herpes. Before I had the IUD I was with 1 man for 5 years and the only infection I ever got was a yeast infection . I am researching to see if anyone else besides the 2 of us also feel the same way.

My phone died during me writing my message, this is the first time that I'm hearing about a pattern between herpes and the mirena. I'm 18. I've been with one man in that intimate matter, then got an IUD and I'm hearing about herpes, straight from the blue. 2 months later, too. I don't have no kids, so that's EXACTLY who I'm worried about. Me? Oh well. But them!? It's just killing me thinking of their birth.. it's a relief to hear of this pattern, but at he same time, it's more frustrating. Now, somehow, I'm the one giving herpes, thinking it was him, him thinking it was him despite the test.. :'(

This is crazy! I have been with the same man for 7 years and never any signs of herpes in either one of us. After having the Mirena for 14 months I broke out with blistery bumps And sure enough it's herpes. I am baffled and assume this virus has been dormant for years and Mirena brought it out!? I feel better knowing I'm not baffled alone!

Same thing happened to me. After 14 months of having Mirena I had first outbreak ever in my life. I've been with same man for 7 years and never signs before. I am clueless but assume I've had it for years dormant in my body. Thank you Mirena! I'm calling dr to remove asap!

Two months after I had Mirena inserted I had my first vaginal outbreak. I have been with the same man for 3 years and have never had an outbreak what so ever. Can anyone tell me if when they got their mirena removed did the outbreaks stop?????

I had the Mirena removed and yes, I continue to have outbreaks. I probably had 4-5 the first year and now I usually have one about every 6 months or so and they are not bad at all. My doctor prescribed medication to take at the first sign of an outbreak and that helps tremendously. I'm still just amazed at the amount of people this is happening to ... unbelievable.

I just recently had a baby he is a healthy two month old boy and I later got the iud and I mean not even a week later after insertion I was diagnosed with herpes it's crazy I wish I would have came across this page before I got the iud and now my partner has it i have been with him for five years and he claims he never did anything and I certainly have not so at this point I'm just shocked I'm only 22 and iv never had anything wrong with me or any signs so when I spoke to my obgyn she called me boyfriend a jerk and tried to reassure me that he gave it to me and cheated she said it can lay dormant for months... I'm so unsure what to think at this point especially with the doctor telling me that. How could so many women have this problem
