After 7 mos of having the mlirena inserted I am having a constant outbreak of cold sores (hsv 1). I used to get one or two a year but I've had 12 in the last six weeks all of a sudden and they are far more severe. I got medication from my dr but I couldn't take them fast enough. I am going to my dr to have the IUD. Removed asap. I have been beating myself up for weeks wondering why this is happening and today I had the thought of the mirena so I decided to research it and I am shocked to read that so many people are experiencing this. Thank you ladies for sharing and I wish you all the best.

Guess I should chime in. Mirena inserted 6 months ago and apparently I transfered my own hsv1 from my mouth to my genitals. That's supposed to be pretty rare since I already have antibodies for the virus. Plus, I haven't had an outbreak on my mouth in 9 or 10 months. Super weird and also traumatic for my relationship.

I am CONVINCED Mirena causes HSV outbreaks. I could have never even imagined something like this. I got the Mirena and after about 6-8 months kept having horrible itchiness. My OB/GYN didn't find this. I ended up going to another doctor that did blood work and found it. I kept the Mirena in for a little while longer just to give it a year. It really sucked because aside from that it was great! I had it removed and haven't had another scratchy sympton since October. I wish they would do a study on this to find the link. I will sign the petition!

Let me add to the pile. I am 44 yrs old and have had HSV2 for 20+ yrs. I was at a point where I had not needed to take meds for years. Outbreaks were very rare. (I am married and husband has never gotten it from me). I got the Mirena put in and in less than a month later I got my first OB in a long time. It was not too bad, but the one that followed was very bad. One of my worst ever. As soon as it cleared up, I felt another one coming. I found my old meds and started taking a mega dose and the OB never broke through the skin (it itched and I felt the raised skin). I was not happy to come to the realization that the additional hormone in the IUD was is variable that has triggered the virus. Having 3 back to back OBs is not normal for me. Especially after 20 yrs. I won't go into all the details about how hormones affect the immune system. You all can research that on your own.

I have heavy periods and have decided to keep the IUD, despite the outbreaks, because of my anemia. That was the reason I had the hormonal IUD type put in. I am hoping after the first year (when the hormone release isn't as strong) that my OBs will not be an issue or reoccur as much as they seem to be doing now. Can't know till I get there. So I will take the meds, double up when I need to, and wait it out.

Sorry that some of you had to find out that you had HSV (1,2) this way. Many people have it and don't even know they do. You were probably one of those people until the extra progesterone threw your immune system off. But I can say...that I knew I had mine and was symptom free for a long time and shortly after having the Mirena (hormonal) IUD put in...the extra progesterone dramatically increased my outbreaks. (note: I eat well, manage stress well, take supplements, etc... and am still having this problem. So diet and lifestyle choices are not the factor).

I have had the device now for 3 months and have had 3 OBs. You have to weigh out the pros and cons. If you could use a different form of Birth Control (if that is why you got it) Then I would get it removed. The copper IUD has no hormones, but it can give you heavier periods and bad cramps. If you do decide on another form, I would get one that balances estrogen with it. From what I have read...the Depo shot has caused OBs too. It too is just progesterone.

For me the Mirena has been the answer for my heavy bleeding and very painful cramps so far. Within this short amount of time, my bleeding has reduced greatly and I have not had to take any pain meds. I hope you all find your solutions.

I agree. I think they should do some sort of study or at least go back to old studies done on female hormones and HSV. It would have been nice to know that increased OBs could happen. PID and BV are big things That I read about. I did not see anything for HSV outbreaks until I really went searching for it.

None of u should feel bad for having Herpes 1 or 2 or shingles. I myself have HV2 and so i did my research. EVERYONE is born with the dormant virus. Virgins can get it they are to run down or overly stress or after a traumatic experience. I didnt connect havin HV2 and having a coil b4 reading this page so thank u all for your posts. It took me years to be ok with havin HV2 and understanding that the truth about herpes and the social view of it are 2 totally different things. Dont think about what people think, just focus on being right with you, thats all that matters. Take care xx

I totally agree. I bet there is thousands of people to ashamed to admit the have herpes from Mirena iud. I thought I was the only one. Now I know 3 people that have contracted herpes after getting Mirena. Now I'm brave enough to admit it ! Hopefully this will haveore people come out and maybe we can keep this from happening to other people!

I'm 27 and have always been a healthy person. I got diagnosed with hsv 1 around my genitals 2 years ago. I had a few outbreaks but then I had a T-safe copper coil inserted 8 months ago and have had outbreaks every month. I feel constantly unwell and tired. At one stage I had a UTI, an outbreak and a throat infection all at once. I saw a clinical nutritionist who had similar complications when she had a coil fitted and advised me to have it removed. Ive tried managing the outbreaks with various medications and avoiding stress. My theory is that my immune system is prioritising trying to fight the coil so much as an alien body that it's taking the resources away from fighting the herpes virus.
I am writing this as I sit in extreme abdominal pain where my coil sits whilst dealing with an outbreak. I am so grateful I found all your threads as it's helped me decide on having it removed.

g !! My situation is similar to yours. I'm a 20 yr old female on the mirena for two years now.. & all of a sudden I got this outbreak on my vagina & butt cheeks they were open ulcers they didn't have any fluid in them. I've been freaking out that my new boyfriend has given it to me. Went to the doctor did a vaginal exam & blood test I was negative for all STI's except HSV which were not ready. At the moment my doctor said it could be a bacterial infection prescribed me antibiotics.. & the ulcers on my vagina disappeared except for the ones on my buttcheek I'm freaking out that I may have herpes. Will be receiving my HSV results very soon.
