OBGYNs should seriously inform women of this risk with hormonal IUDs. I wish I’d done copper.

Hello,
So I have had something similar happen. A few months after I got the mirena IUD in, I kept getting BV and yeast infections. Later, I started getting vaginal ulcerated sores that I was sure was HSV. However, the swab tests all came back negative every time I got one. Eventually I found out that the mirena can cause cyclic vulvovaginitis or vulvitis due to hormonal changes. Cases of vulvitis can look and feel like HSV. Once I got my IUD out, I had one more outbreak of these sores and still tested negative for HSV, but haven’t had one since. A friend of mine also had this issue. Her swab and blood tests came back positive but she had never had sex. Once she got her IUD removed, she never had another outbreak. If you’re having this issue and have never had previous cases of HSV, I’d recommend getting the IUD removed because it could be the cause of your issues.

Then on my first period I got cold sores and they are bigger than I’ve had in years.
I’ve been taking lysine and vit c, zinc and I still broke out.

I just had this same experience... I got my Mirena IUD inserted just a few weeks ago and in the week following the procedure I became extremely sick with fever, test positive for strep and start antibiotics, then begin having all symptoms of HSV2. I went back to my OBGYN, tested positive for HSV2 and started acyclovir, and as the episode finally cleared up a couple days ago up I am now feeling another OB starting.
I am very careful always testing and using protection. My only recent partner we did not have intercourse only oral sex. After my outbreak, he disclosed to me that he is HSV positive, but he has no outbreak, feels healthy and we didn't have intercourse. His doctor told him it wasn't possible that he gave it to me. Whether it was him or a past partner that gave me a dormant case without me knowing, I am CERTAIN that the Mirena IUD caused this outbreak. My energy is so low from being so sick, in too much pain to walk for the last week and I am now feeling symptoms and sick again. I am considering going straight back to remove the IUD. Hoping this clears up as soon as possible.

I am a healthy 31 year old who rarely gets ill and never had any symptoms or issues prior to this.
I decided to research a link between herpes and the coil as it seemed like a strange coincidence to suddenly have all these problems after having it fitted and come across this thread, I’m shocked at how many people have suffered from a very similar situation to mine. It sounds like the progesterone in the hormonal IUD is a cause for triggering very dormant herpes that none of us knew we had and causing us outbreaks, I do wish I had known this sooner, I am having mine removed at the hope this will stop further outbreaks from occurring once my body adjusts to the removal.
