Hi All,

Thanks for the posts. I'm 33 and woke up one morning with top portion of one of my testicles hurting with a dull pain. The pain over the course of the next three to four days grew to make me schedule a doctor's appointment. During that time period, the pain started to spread to my entire scrotum then into my abdoment a bit and very much so in my lower back on both sides. I had some aches in my legs and torso region, a very very small fever (hardly noticable), and mild chills occasionally. This drove me to seek ER treatment as trauma nurses said "you would know it if you had a testicular torsion" and so I was pretty sure it wasn't a major torsion but the pain was growing and spreading so I hit the ER for evaluation thinking it might be an infection.

They checked me for kidney stones, gangreen, mild hurnia, torsion (ultrasound), infection (urine sample), and blood tests. After about 8 hours in ER they said they could not determine the cause. The ultrasound came back positive (ie. normal healthy blood flow to the region, no lumps - i did conduct a self-exam as well) and nothing abnormal. Consequently, they said, "you might just be getting sick" which left me with some comfort but lack of knowing why. I was just in a few days ago, but immediately over night I began to improve a little. Today my one testicle is a bit uncomfortable, but I have been minimizing my time on my feet, which as helped quite a bit. Ibuprofin helps as well. I should have a follow-up visit soon, but for the most part, thing seem to be subsiding.

Here is a list of symptoms and things I have done to notice feeling a better:

Symptoms:

- Overnight pain; develops quickly
- Testicular pain (one testicle at first on the top where the spermacidal cord connects); this cord also was very tender and I felt a sagging feeling on it
- Testicular pain spread to whole scrotum (within about 3 days) - a dull feeling (not extremely sharp pain unless the testiclar area is touched)
- Mild, but not totally comfortable pain in the lower abdomen and parineum
- Some chills; slight fever (barely noticeable)
- Frequency of urination increasing - did not have trouble urinating (urine was pretty clear)
- Lower back pain around the kidney areas - this was probably the most painful at times
- Upper thigh pain on both legs
- No headaches or nausea
- No diarehea or vomiting

What They Did:

- Collected a urine and blood sample (for infections - looking for increased white blood cell counts)
- Checked blood pressure and temperature
- Testicular exam and lower abdomen exam (touching; exploring for painful areas)
- Asked about symptoms
- Conducted an Ultrasound of the scrotum
- Asked about buldges regard hernias
- Explored temperature and color of scrotum (heat of things down there)
- Explored potential kidney stone history

What I Have Done to Feel a Bit Better:

- Do NOT let this play mind games with you. It will only heighten the pain, the frustration, and the fear, which will not help you
- Do not take med's other than for minor pain relief. I did not take many at all so I could monitor the pain increases or decreases each day (while this didn't help for pain, it helped for measuring progress)
- DRINK plenty of water! It is easy not to eat or drink when feeling ill, but I think a majority of my back pains came from not drinking enough water to keep hydrated. Unless you are vomiting, healthy foods and water are a must! Stay away from pop, etc.
- Check yourself out so you can give detailed symptoms to the doctor
- Lie down; this takes pressure off of your groin region (it's worked wonders for me)
- Wear supportive underwear (whities or sport briefs) during this to keep the forces of gravity from pulling on the area further. I wear both boxers and briefs (sport shorts and whities) but mainly boxers. Boxers put some major strain on the cord attaching to the testicles when thing stared - I immediately went back to my briefs.
- Keep unnecessary pants pressure off the the area. Wear baggier clothing. Too much pressure does nothing good.
- Take Ibuprofin to lessen any inflammation.
- Just rest. Plain and simple.

Good luck!

Update: (jeguest) Received medical attention (follow-up) today due to increased pain around the belly button. Had dull pain about 2" below the belly button around both sides and would occasionally get a small twinge in my testicles during movement. This prompted my follow-up. It is a feeling like I either am hungery, or have a small belly cramp, or have to go to the bathroom. I have also had a bit of a frequency to urinate a bit more as well. They said today all blood work came back ok, a prostate check was conducted to check for swelling, etc - this was fine as well. Also did a hernia and abdominal check and little pain surfaced (which was 'good' in the doctors words).

In the end, they believe I have a torn/strained abdominal muscle - the muscle(s) that run down to to the groin and testicles. The remedy: Ibuprofen, Tylenol (800mg and 1g, respectively) for one week. I need to go back then for evaluation. I've read on others posts here and there that the symptoms keep resurfacing. This could be due to a muscle not fully healing. I've read it might take anywere from days to 12 weeks or perhaps surgery in rare/extreme cases to regain full strength of those muscles. I'm just not sure how I pulled mine as I reflect back. More to come...Good luck.

Hi. I'm 22, and have been having similar symptoms since I was about 16. I've been to urologists, family doctors, and have had ultrasounds checking for cancer and other abnormalities, all with no definitive result or answer. The pain usually is in my left testicle, is somewhat dull, and is closer to the top and in my left quad starting from my groin down to my knee cap. Everytime the pain occurs, it is painful to walk or put any pressure on my left leg. Often times the pain comes from nowhere, but I've had experiences that probably stemmed from tight clothing and improper attire while running or working out. When I first began experiencing this, however, I sincerely thought it was testicular torsion which is the twisting of the spermatic cord. This can be very dangerous, and if action is not taken within 6 hours, the testicle can be lost (I am not posting this to scare anyone; I had actually learned about this affliction from a cartoon called Venture Brothers, so maybe my reaction to the pain was a little histrionic. This affliction is legitimate, though). To say the least, I've always been paranoid that something like that may occur; but after reading many of the posts above, my symptoms are consistent and somewhat common I suppose. It's good to read that others have had similar experiences and that I am not alone, because it is hard to explain to people why you are suddenly limping or walking very slowly, especially if you don't know them very well (a little humor for an uncomfortable topic). Also, for those who are experiencing pain, I suggest getting it checked regardless; don't be afraid to tell someone. In conclusion, I appreciate the posts, and good luck to all you good men dealing with an unfortunate situation.

I was having the same problem three years back, with exactly the same symptoms. At that time the doctors in Delhi kept me admitted in the hospital for a week and treated for some small stone in the urinary tract. They did ultrasound on almost daily basis for noting the position of stone in the tract. They also give some antibiotics.Till the date of discharge on my insistence the position of the stone did not change ( a cool bill of Rs.35000/=)but some how the pain reduced. Now also it pains sometime but more or less Iam fine.Iconclude that we have to self examine ourselves, our habits, routine, intake etc, not depending upon the doctors

CRM814,

I cannot thank you enough for your posts.  I know it must be discouraging to put stuff out there and not get a lot of responses (at least not at first).  My husband is experiencing similar symptoms and I'm trying to do some research and so far your posts have been the most helpful.  He seems to go through this ever 2-3 years (this is the 3rd or 4th time) and every time he goes to his primary care physician who sends him to the ER to rule out torsion.  The ER docs do an ultrasound and rule out everything else and then send him home with some pain killers.  They often say (though guess seems to be the better word) that it is a cyst, though we usually cannot see or a feel a bump at all.

Personally, I think a lot of it is stress.  This seems to happen when he gets particularly stressed out.  At any rate, thank you for your dedication to these posts, they have been very helpful.

Best wishes.

Hi Guest,

Well, that nearly brought a tear to my eye - everybody, listen to this man!!!

I have had all of the symptoms described word-for-word by CRM814 on and off for around 15 years. Over the past four months I've had them worse than ever before.

I am no stranger to stress and anxiety - I run a small technical services company in New Zealand and the financial, organisational and day-to-day stress, whilst it may not seem all that significant, is a b***h! It creeps up on you without you even knowing and manifests itself in physical ways you can only humanly describe as your worst fear - i.e. terminal illness, cancer etc. Problem is, this only leads to a cascade of fear and panic which in turn leads to more ball ache ...literally!!

My friends, time to take some deep breaths, eat well and make sure you EXERCISE!!! This is is the key to burning off that stress and making yourself well.

Take care guys, all the best.

Ed.

i just had very similar symptoms.I had pains in my right flank and lower back. Then gradually a pain in my right testicle dull, achy and very annoying.I let it go fro about 10 days when I finally decided to go get checked.I went to physician and was examined with no findings.Dr. did a rectal exama s well and urine all came back fine.Dr. prescribed cipro 500mg 2x a day. Also ordered a ultrasound which came back as no abnormal findings.I really think its a stress thing and or prostraitis.I am relieved but still not sure what it is and thats is worrisome.SOmething is causing the pain but what is it? Stress, or an infection I will update after the cipro treatment is finished.

I also have had these symptoms that CRM814 and most of you have felt. An ache in my left testicle which sometimes moves to both, pain in the sides of my lower back, in my stomach and down my legs. I was terrified and even more so after I began searching the internet for possible reasons why. I never realized it could be due to stress and anxiety. I have a history of anxiety and the other night I had my first major panic attack where I called the ambulance because I thought I was going to die. This was preluded by feeling these aches in my testicles and I guess I became so worried I had an attack. I've had urine samples, exams and an ultra sound which all came up empty. Finding this post and reading that many of you have had the same experience and that I'm not alone really comforted me. In the past I've had severe bone aches in my leg and collar bone, waking me up in the night. My doctor said it was due to stress, and I was kind of hoping that might be the cause of the symptoms I feel now but the internet can make you think scary things, especially when your stressed and full of anxiety already. I just wanted to thank you for your posts and maybe mine will help someone else.

I am experiencing very similar symptoms. And the symptoms came up on me pretty fast. over the weekend. the testicle pain/discomfort became worse after sittng for being in same postion for an extended period of time. Symptoms started on Friday- sligth pain in right testicle. Saturday, same pain but at times aggravated - Sunday, same pain but now also pain on inner thigh.

Due to this i made a same day appt to see a Urologist. Urine test came back with traces of blood in them. Ultrasaound were good, no kidney stones or anything along those lines either.

Dr. mentioned I have an infection, epididymitis and prescribed me a 2 week dose of Cipro today.

Thus far, no improvement, then again it has only been one day  ;-)   But now I am also experiencing a lower back pain along with everything else.

I will post an update in a few days, hopefully this helps everyone that is experiencing same symptoms and desperately looking for answers/guidance.
