I've had the same reaction to Burt's Bees Peppermint lip balm. I'm glad I found this forum through a google search. I had used this lip balm intermittently for years and noticed that my lips felt sore and more chapped while using it so I stopped 6 months ago. I then used it again before bed last week and woke up with swollen, itchy, lips w/ small bumps at the border of my lip and face. I looked like I'd had a collagen injection! Unfortunately, that effect lasted one day before my lips became very chapped, with thick skin that cracked when I smiled or talked. It is an allergy...and curious that many people have had the same allergy to the same lip balm. I rarely have allergies, too.

Ok I am looking up "skin allergy lips"and found this forum. I used Burt's Bees last night after dinner. It's the next morning and I am icing my lips cuz they are so swollen. What's going on with this lip chap? I've been using it awhile and have had reactions before. I didn't know what it was so I threw out all my lipsticks. I was just using Neosporin lip ointment for awhile. Everything was fine. Until now.. Burt's Bees is the culprit! I used to use this all the time! But I thought skin allergies happen right away. Why did it take years of using it?

Since a lot of people are saying that Burt's Bees caused their reactions I just wanted to write in to say that Burts Bees is the ONLY chapstick that doesn't give me an allergic reaction. I get little clear bumps on my lips a few days after I use any other type of chapstick. I can also use Bare Minerals lipstick color. I guess you have to work through the allergy to find something that doesn't give you a reaction. I'm most concerned about how to treat the allergy. I haven't found a solution for that and it seems like it lasts for a while (at least a week).

Wow. That's exactly what happened to me. I used Burts Bees lip balm for a few years, and stopped using it a few months ago after I ran out. A couple weeks ago I bought a new tube and 2 hours after I applied it my lips they swelled up and began blistering. I looked like I just had collagen injections. Luckily, lips heal quick, and after about 4 days they were back to normal. I tried the lip balm again 2 weeks after (thinking the allergic reaction had been caused by an antibiotic I had taken at the time), and again within a couple hours my lips swelled up and began blistering and pussing. It hurts alot. Feels like a really bad sunburn. I threw it out and will never use it again. Too bad because I loved the stuff.

I can't believe this is still going on. I purchased Burts Bees lip balm around thanksgiving in 2007 and developed swelling, sore lips with bumps on them. Since I also had a severe cold I thought nothing of it, though I never developed cold sores in my past 40+ years. I kept applying the lip balm because my lips were sore and made the problem worse. After the holiday I went to the doctor and got an expensive medication for cold sores. It dried up the bumps but they recurred because I kept using the lip balm . At no time did my doctor suggest that the lip balm was causing the problem. I finally figured it out myself after taking some needed time off and noticing the problem was worse in the mornings after applying lip balm at night. Needless to say I am disgusted by the whole ordeal! It is nearly impossible to find any warnings about allergies to this product and doctors don't take us serious! I am now using an OTC cream to soothe and help clear the red splotches that surround my lips and hopefully it will clear up soon.

The only lipchap I can use without a reaction is SoftLips. I dono why.. I dono how.
But its not very good stuff, runs out fast and smells strong..
So I also use 98% aloe vera gel on my lips, tastes weird, but does the trick and i don't react to it.

Hope this may have helped you guys!

In Feb 09, I got a slight sunburn on my lips. Reasoning that I should have used a lip balm/sunscreen, I bought Burt's Bees Medicated Lip Balm to "soothe, heal and relieve'. However the problem got worse. An I kept on using the Burt's Bees thinking that something else was causing the inflammation. Finally, someone mentioned that I was looking like a clown that had forgotten to remove his make-up and suggested that I had a herpes outbreak. (Good joke material there!). My lips were red and peeling and felt like a severe burn. It made it difficult to sleep. By April, the lips were starting to exude a clear liquid.

In mid-April, I went to my family doctor who said that it didn't look like herpes but could be and prescribed some creams until I could see a dermatologist. On May 6, I got to see the specialist who called in anther specialist for confirmation. In their opinion, it was likely an allergic reaction to the use of the Burt's Bees which has camphor and menthol in it. One doctor mentioned that she had seen this before with Burt's and thought that it also contained rosin as a non-active ingredient.

The end result was to apply a cortisoid cream called ratio-mometasone ointment. The problem cleared itself up in three days.

Hope this helps

i thought that i wasnt allergic to ANYTHING until i tried burts bees lip balm in the little yellow round tin can and a couple of the lip balm sticks last nite. they were my boyfriends lip balms so when i started to get these cold sores on both corners of my mouth and on the center of my upper lip, i thought i had gotten them from his lip balm because i NEVER got cold sores on my mouth in my life, so i thought i got the mouth herpes from him! he gets them from time to time, but i completely avoid him when he has them. but now that i've read this very helpful thread, i now realize that im probably just allergic to the lip balm and they are fever blisters, NOT cold sores. i was wondering how a virus could live on lip balm that he hadnt used in months, haha. thanks guys, now im not as worried and im never using that c**p again!

Hi Just wanted to let you know. I just had the same reaction today with Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer. But I am wondering if it is fact the peppermint oil that is in the chapstick. I put on the lip shimmer today and reacted with tiny tiny blisters and it felt like my lips were sunburned. I immediately washed them off with cold water. It was fine up until this evening when I went to go brush my teeth (which happens to be peppermint flavored). During brushing and directly afterward my lips reignited with the blisters and chapped feeling.
Perhaps an allergy to peppermint is too blame. I am not sure if all Burt's lip balms have some sort of menthol/peppermint component, but that could be the cause for some people. It seems like it is for me.
I too have used Burts in the passed with no problems.

I'm glad I found this site.

I am guessing that the mint is what caused you to have a breakout but I'm not sure of it. I think that's a good start though. Have you founds something that works better for you yet?

Wow, this thread is a relief! I used to use Burt's Bee's lip balm years ago with no problems. I ran out of my SoftLips and purchased Burt's Bee's for the heck of it. I had been using it every once in a while with no problems. Then I went out of town and the Burt's was the only thing I was using on my lips. I am now attributing my symptoms to the lip balm... it started to make the inside of my lips itch every time I applied it. And now the inside of my mouth feels raw, is swollen, and the taste buds on my tongue are inflamed. Not to mention, whenever I brush my teeth, the toothpaste stings my mouth like crazy! Luckily, there are no symptoms visible, except that my lips feel even more chapped! I just stopped using the Burt's a couple days ago, and am hoping that my mouth heals quickly. I bought a plain old Chapstick brand balm, and am hoping that helps.

I am so glad I found this site! I usually use softlips, but my mom gave me a tube of Burts Bees lipbalm. I have used it on and off for a little over a week and I am now hiding out in my room because it looks like I had lip injections (gone wrong I might add). In addition to the swelling, they itch and have tiny bumps on them.

I've had the same thing with Blistex lip conditioner, I had used it for over 2years, and all of the sudden I had a tingling feeling on my lips, I thought it was a cold sore because I usually get a cold sore each year. It went on for 8weeks, I was clueless the whole time and I was applying the lip balm like if it was keeping me alive because it made my lips feel less tingly and better, I went to the doctor and I mentioned I was using lip balm and it turns out it was the lip balm. Now I've tried nivea lip balm but the same reaction happened, I went onto Forever aloe lip balm and it didn't give me any allergic reactions for 4months, now I'm getting swollen lips from it.

I don't have any answers but I too have been having this problem! I had noticed for about a year I had dry, cracked, peeling lips. Then a few months ago I started getting the redness and burning that everyone is describing. It all hit the fan when I tried using Mary Kay Satin lips, I woke up the next morning looking like I had cheap lip injections and have had the severed burning and blistering with EVERY lipgloss I have used since, including chapstick, aveeno, nivea, and vaseline lip gloss. The ONLY thing i have used on my lips the past few weeks that haven't bothered them is Aloe Vera. NO idea what is causing this but at least I have stopped creating a problem for myself!
