What kind of chapstick are you using? For about a week now my lips have been dry bumpy and itchy. I though it was chapping at first so I was using a Burt's bees chapstick. I was also using a neosporin because it had numbing agents that gave me some relief. I then noticed that they were bumpy and started freaking out. After a couple of days I lost my chapstick so I started using Vaseline. Nothing change but I did get a new stick of the Burt's bees a day later. I just found a pic online of something similar to my issue and the author said it was because of the Burt's Bees. I don't have any other allergies to anything that I know of. I have decided to stop using ANYTHING on my lips to see what happens. Not looking forward to it :(

I'm glad I'm not the only person this happens to! I have been dealing with this problem for the past couple of years. I am not sure where to go next, that is why I am posting here. Randomly my top lip (usually only the top lip) on one side or the other will begin to swell and get irritated. It doesn't really hurt just annoying and looks bad- like a lip injection gone wrong. I hadn't had any breakouts in a while until last night. I was driving home and swiped some Nieva moisturizer chapstick on and immediately the top left stung and swelled. I mean it got big and puffy- like never before. I haven't found anything that stands out to me ingredient wise and I am not allergic to anything and never have been. I thought maybe I was susceptible to cold sores but these don't look like a typical cold sore. In fact it doesn't look like much of anything when the reaction calms down and usually doesn't leave a mark. But this last reaction was so bad I took 2 benadryl and that definitely helped. But I am still stumped as to what is causing this? I've tried expensive lip products and cheap products and nothing works. There is no rhyme or reason the when this happens either. I need help!

I had always used Burt's Bee's lip balm until about 2 yrs ago when my lips started hurting, stinging and were severely chapped. I didn't have any swelling or bumps but I finally realized it was the balm. I stopped using it and switched to Chapstick brand. All of my symptoms went away. By trial and error, I realized I had developed an allergy to peppermint oil. I recently tested this out by purchasing the Candy Cane flavor by Chapstick and sure enough my lips started cracking and hurting again. I let them heal and tried the CO Bigelow from Bath & Body Works Lip Creams (in the green tubes). Then I tried the Burt's Bee Lip Shimmers that I used to wear along with the balm on a regular basis. All of these caused my lips to have the reaction too. The common ingredient in all was the peppermint oil. I have not had any problems with lip sticks, glosses or balms that do not contain peppermint oil. I'm going to try the new tinted lip balms from Burt's Bees next as those do not have peppermint oil in the ingredients. I want to make sure it isn't some other ingredient Burt's Bees uses.

It is the peppermint, menthol, etc they put in them. Not the actually oils. I just finally started making my own with equal parts coconut oil, olive oil(both from grocery store), and food grade beeswax(available for about $3 from Amazon). Melt them together and pour into sanitized clean tins, or tubes.(can be purchased on Amazon also) I use 2 teaspoons of each one, and get a bit more than 7 tubes from that. Now I have no more itchy, bumpy lips. You can find many recipes on YouTube.

Ive been through the same problem as everybody in this group and spent so much money experimenting which lip balm, lip moisturizer or even lipstick i wouldnt have a reaction. So far the only thing that works for my lips is Loccitane pure shea butter. Ive also been using almay liquid lip balm for a week now with no reaction. Just want to share. Im now actively looking for a lipstick that will work as good.

I've had allergy reactions twice to what I now think was a lip balm allergy. The first time I went to the ER since I didn't understand what was happening. The swelling started on my top lip then moved to my bottom lip. I either used Burt Bees tinted lip balm or what I used this time Colour Riche Lip Balm. Today I used the Colur Riche lip balm twice before a co-worker noticed my upper lip appeared puffy. I caught it earlier this time and took two Benedryl and some leftover prednasone I had from the last occurrence. Never had any allergies before to lip balm. Very strange.

Finally an answer. I have been allergic to Latex for years and tried the Burt's Bees lip balm a couple of years ago to my dry lips. Same as others, I ended up with swollen lips. Just recently I've tried the Burt's Bees hand cream that I received as a xmas gift and have a horrible rash with tiny bumps and am miserable!

I just used Burts bees lip balm with peppermint last night and got a bad reaction like many described above. I have also got the same reaction from EOS peppermint lip balm- they are the ones in the little plastic eggs. THe peppermint one was the mint green. I believe it is the peppermint. I wont use peppermint on my lips again. I used reactine to reduce the swelling- it worked a little.
