I've recently, (three days now), been experiencing some chest pain that flares NOT with exercise or heatbeat, but with eating, burping or stretching. I'm almost convinced it is some sort of esophogus ulcer... except I also find that I am sleeping a lot.
That is, I'm falling asleep at work, at home, when still & quiet... and I'm worried now that it's something related to the heart or the pulmanary artery.
Can anyone advise?
My blood pressure is up a bit 139/90 instead of 124/80 as when I take my Benicar regularly. That's it...no other meds.
Thanks for any tips.

Hi Kirk: This sounds like classic Acid Reflux! It REALLY takes it's tole on our bodies, what happens is the flap over our stomach doesn't close effectively and lets acid come back out from the stomach! Sometimes it is SO bad that the symptoms are EXACTLY the same as a heart attack! Some ER doctors are even stumped when they find out that their patient actually suffered from a severe Acid Reflux attack, instead of a Heart Attack. Below please find the symptoms of Acid Reflux!
http://www.webmd.com/heartburn-gerd/guide/acid-reflux-symptoms
When you suffer from these symptoms, you are less likely to have a good rest - thus being tired!
To put your mind at ease I would like you to go to the doctors and just have him/her give you a check up, run an EKG etc. Take some blood work, when they get the results back, then they can send you to a Gastroentonologist! And they can do a Barium Xray on you! In the mean time Prevacid is a VERY good tablet to take! But first lets get you checked out OK? Please let me know how things work out! Good luck and health!

Hi Kirk, I'm not entirely sure if the sleeping part would matter much. It could theoretically be a symptom of the esophagus ulcer because that could plausibly take a toll on your sleeping habits. I think that regardless of what it is, it's definitely worth a trip to the doctor because it doesn't sound like something that'll clear itself up. Let me know what it turns out to be, okay?

Fed up with waking in the morning with a chest pain on the left side, I went to the grocery store and bought Zantac 75.
In the past, after eating some bizarre chilli and having symptoms for a week, this Zantac clelared it right up. But I'm not finding a lot of relief from it.
I find Ibuprofen makes me forget about it for a while at work.
Just underwent a VERY stressful vacation trip to British Columbia with busload of retirees... One had an attack of Chroans (sp?) disease, one tripped and tore a tendon in her knee, and one couple with hard of hearing problems continuinally missed the boarding announcements and so we had to sheppard around the airports as if we were their family. Very stressful.
Plus, my internet access through work went down while we were out there, and it appeared that my boss had cut it off. So I didn't know if I had been fired while away or not. No one was returning my emails or requests for information while away.*
Plus, a raging forest fire threatened the railway we were riding upon, so we were airlifted out of the back woods and back to civilization. We flew through the mountain peaks in heavy smoke and clouds, on two small chartered planes and into a small airport that had been closed to stage the fire fighting helicopters at. They warned the copters out of the way so that we could land. We watched them dip buckets of water from the river suspended below the copters, just like on TV, and whisk them over the hills to dump on the blaze. 2000 people evacuated from the largest town when the fire came within 1 km of the town. WOW!
Not your smoothest of vacations.
Is there any wonder that I've got an ulcer or something going on now that I'm back at work?
(*PS: The internet outage was just a new release of the program that no one warned me about. Whew!)

Yeah, I think that there's a lot of stronger evidence taht you have an ulcer just based on the fact that Zantac is not working for you. It would work out better for you if you didn't have it but since you do seem to have an ulcer, it wouldn't work. I definitely think you should see a doctor to have it checked based on that info.
By the way what a nightmare vacation you had! It's almost like going back to work is a vacation XD

You have no idea.... (Actually, it was Lillooet, British Columbia!)
(I've only told you the stresses, not the high points, of which there were many...)

Well I'm sure that there were fun times too but man, it's almost like what's the point. ;) How's your heartburn/ulcer working out right now? still burning?

Kelowna!!!!!!? I have a friend there right now who has been on alert for weeks. **No, it was Lillooet, same province, different fire.**
Did you know that Ulcers aren't caused by stress?!!!! The pain from ulcers is more when you are stressed - because of the overwhelming of the brain - which controls our pain centres!
It doesn't sound like a typical Ulcer to me, it definitely sounds like Acid Reflux! Zanax does NOTHING for that! Prevacid is a VERY good drug for acid! And this would fit with your pain being on your left side - thus people thinking it's their heart! This is where the stomach is too! You do need to learn ways to relax, it sounds like your body is on ALERT!!! And that really takes its toll on your physical and mental state!
You need to see a Gastroentonologist And have him/her give you a Barium Xray and possibly an Endoscope! IF you have the acid reflux and pills can't help it, there is a simple procedure they can do to close the flap!
So try and get to see your doctor and have them check you out OK!? Also taking Magnesium and Calcium tablets can really help your stomach out! Keep off of caffeine and carbonated products! Also try taking Acidopholus! Just incase there is a bug in your stomach!
I have a pretty good history of helping people so LISTEN TO ME!!!! Good luck and health!

No, the town was Lillooet that was evacuated.
I've been nursing pepsi and dr. pepper, high in caffine, which seems to make it worse.
I've also been munching on pieces of cashews that were sent to me by a relative. I can't stop myself, and I think that may be agrivating this.
I took a few more Zantac and find that I'm feeling better, but by morning, that muscular pain behind my sternum will be back!
You need to recall that the pain is NOT in my gut...not at the top of the stomach... it's just to the left behind my breast bone and also shows up on my back to the left of the spine.
So I think it's either in the lung or the esohophgus.
But, I'm feeling better.
The doc once did a Barium X-ran and it turned up nothing.
The only other thing out of the ordinary was the wife got both regular barbeque chicken chunks from Wal-Mart and GENERAL SOW'S chucken chunks on Sunday. I had only the BBQ.... but later, she may have combined them in the fridge.
Just before going to bed, I had one more chunk, and it had a little more zing than I was expecting. But not bad.
Next morning, I had the pain starting. I wonder if it was the General Sow's spices or if it was the Cashews that I had nibbled upon, or both.
I'm swearing off the cashews this weekend, hard as it is to ignor that 10 lb can in the pantry!!!! %-)

Hi Kirk: Behind your sternum IS your Esophogus! Where the flap of your stomach is = which when doesn't close correctly IS acid reflux! It doesn't affect your stomach it affects the middle of your body - feeling like the heart sometimes! You will feel it when you burp, stretch etc. - just like you stated! Caffeine and pop are the WORST things for acid, plus salt! Which BBQ sauce is FILLED with! So it all fits! Just because you had a Barium Xray before and showed nothing Doesn't mean there's something there now! If you can rule it out by diet - great! BUT if it continues without reason you do need to see someone about it! The acid can play havoc with the normal function of your throat and esophogus!

Well, the hour by hour pain is gone, but I am still napping a lot.
And I find if I roll onto my left side (my favorite position for dropping off to sleep) I will wake with this chest pain again.
I think I'm compressing something. Or maybe it's acid reflux.
I think the Xantax helped some.
The pain is behind the breastbone, not lower near Stomach.

Hm, even if you were compressing something it wouldn't cause a lasting chest pain like you're describing. I'm not entirely sure what it is, I've got my guesses about an esophagal ulcer and Bambi's pretty sure it's an acid thing. Are you able to see a doctor? Chest pain is one of those things I think you should never mess around with and always see a physician about, but that's me. What do you think?

ACID REFLUX! ACID REFLUX! ACID REFULX! ;-) XD
Your antire chest cavity is encased with ribs! So technically you can't compress something - other than bones, tendons, nerves, cartliadge! Your Esophogus runs basically right down your breast bone - sternum! There is a flap right at the top of the stomach, which opens down when the food and liquid go into it! And is SUPPOSED to close tightly back up, so the stomach can use it's acid to break down the food and fluids! When the flap isn't closed tightly it leaks out acid, which causes burping, burning, gas, sore throats, bad breath etc. You can't get rid of the feeling, you might temporarily, but that's about it! There IS NO escaping Acid Reflux! Some are relieved by medications while others need a procedure to close the flap!
The reason why I know so much about this, is because my youngest son suffered from it for YEARS!!! So listen to MAMMA!!!! ;-) XD 8-| And go and get checked up by your doctor. Because acid - left unchecked - can actually burn right into your esophogus and cause HUGE problems! OK? I WON'T tell you again!!!! XD XD XD XD JK !!!
