He had his adnoids and a reduction inside his nose done about a yr and a half ago, not sure why they didnt' do it all at once.. He's having it done due to snoring, sleep apnea and asthma.. All of these replies have helped me, and I know now what to have on hand.. Just bought a bunch of popsicles today and already motrin and tylenol on hand.. thanks everyone.

My 8 yo son had his out in Nov 2012 - it was awful for two weeks. Period. keep up the pain meds religiously - do not slack. His adenoids had grown back from a previous surgery two years ago, and had those and his tonsils out. Just know that at the two week point he will be great, much better for having it done despite how awful it is for the two weeks. My son didn't eat much if anything besides some popsicles and some liquids. My son no longer snores, wets his bed, and all sleep apnea symptoms have disappeared. I look back at this small blip in our world that was very challenging for a very short while in the whole grand scheme of things, yet made a huge difference to my son's world.

Hi Parents:

My daughter is 8 yrs. old and she is 4th day post op.  I will say that it definitely is not nice to see your children in pain, it's very gruelling for us as parents to witness.  But for us (Chelsea and I), it's been a few years of snoring for her and very tired throughout the day, not to mention she was very animate on attending any sleepovers because of the embarassement of snoring and waking others up - this was very hard on her and me.  She also had a huge number of bronchial infections which caused the use of Avesco 200 and Ventilin puffers in order to clear these infections up - which I might add I despised giving her these things as me growing up very seldom heard of such a large number of kids having to breath any type of sterioid or anything to calm the air ways??  So needless to say, we were forced to put her on these 'puffers,' throughout all of this she had in-depth pulmonary testing done which proved to conclude that she does not have asthma and that all of the bronchial issues she has been having was due to her tonsils and adenoides draining..  So of course a tonsilectomy and adenoide surgery on the 6th of March..  She had, as I have noticed some other parents stating been really good during the day, drinking soup broth, eating popsicles and all of that, last night was not a good night - she is complaining of pain in her jaw and her tongue is sore... Our ENT had perscribed 'morphine' instead of codeine as it was explained to us as parents that codeine is very hard on the stomach.  But in saying that, being a responsible and stubborn parent, I filled the perscription for 'morphine' but thought long and hard last night at 2:15 A.M. in giving it to her, BUT I know that prior to her going to bed I will give her the morphine, as last night I only gave her the minimal dosage of this .5 mls and she rested very well.  I like most other responsible parents do not like to administer this type of 'drug' to our children, but in my view, it is actually the realistic thing to do if it is absolutely needed, which last night it was, as she is a very strong little lady, but when she awoke sobbing, I knew then, that the Tylenol was just not cutting it.  So parents, in conclusion, it sounds that we are all going through the same thing, but the way I explained it to my 8 yr. old is short term pain long term gain - of course in 8 yr. old language so she understood it.  Little words of realistic encouragement and the outcome of how things will be once we are over this hurdle will completely outway the pain and gruelling feelings that we as parents are having to witness throughout these post op days...  Parents stay strong for your kids - if your kids see you getting stressed, they are feeling it as well, it's all in how you handle the kids in my view while travelling through these post op days - they are much stronger than we tend to give them credit for - so lets do the same....

Thanks everyone for information. My 5 year old will have his tonsils and adnoids out this upcomnig summer. I am afraid for him going through it and then being in so much pain after. When I was 15 I had mine out and pain was pretty bad, but I was 15! So I am hoping our ENT is liberal with pain meds. I remeber thinking it wasnt as bad as strep 4-6 times a year.... eh

My 7 year old daughter had her tonsils and adenoids taken out 4 days ago, and she's doing great! She's so far only taken pain medicine once a day, when she wakes up in the morning, and turns it down when I ask if she needs it. She's eating fine, speaking fine, playing fine... if it weren't for the awful breath, I'd swear the surgeon hadn't done anything at all! I'm ready for the earaches, though. We've been too lucky thus far.

My 6 yr old had morphine at the hospital after surgery. Hes on lortab now. His pain is not so bad during the day as long as i give him his meds and motrin. Only thing is the lortab causes him to be so hyper and anxious. I also have that reaction to vicodin. So if i ever need any pain meds the dr gives me percocet. Nights lately hes has been screaming in pain. I asked the dr to give the percocet instead of the lortab due to the problems hes having. it would only be a dose in the morning and night. He wont do it. said a six yr old cant have it. I know thats so not true. He had morphine! And i have a friend whos 2 yr old gets percocet after every surgury. Its quite frusterating. Other then those times hes doing quite well. He is drinking very well eeating some soft foods. I def understand the hating the pain part though. He wakes in the middle of the night in so much pain.

The Tylenol may not be working because its every six hours rotation. Glad she's doing better! My son has been doing sign language and barely opens mouth and all that too! He won't eat either. Day of surgery he woke up and slept again within minutes and woke up very late. He had some milk, jello and pudding and yes Mac n cheese! And more milk.. A Popsicle and sherbet.. Now he can't stand anything an tolerates some water... Just feel aggravated because he did great day of and next day but not now. He doesn't like the cold and he doesn't ever like anything more than his warm (feels freezing to me). He wakes up crying haven't seen him throw up though he had excess mucous and spit.

Our doctor said whatever we wantin him to eat that wasn't hard chips or crunchy. My son is 4. The doctor said liquid is most important but that as of first day we could do Popsicle, ice cream, soup, burger, nuggets. He said absolute whatever he would eat that wasn't greasy. The ones here were more about throat needs to stay lubricted and body needs to stay strong! He did say after calcium it would help to wash with water.

My son is 7 and had both tonsils and adnoids out. When they took them out they were covered in infection. He could have died without surgery. Dont be afraid...

Did the headaches go away? My son is 6 and started with headaches at night after the 3rd day of surgery. Since, he has them now during the day and they end as fast as they start. He is in excruciating pain.. He asks for an ice pack and for me to rub his head and they go away fast without medication. We are now a week after his tonsillectomy/adenoid surgery.

Thank you for the heads up, my 2 year old daughter, single mom here, is having her tonsils and adenoids out 3 weeks from today. I will make sure after 23 hours in the hospital that she is sent with both antibiotics and pain kills. Thank you so much and I am terribly sorry you went through that. I had mine out when I was 22 and that is exactly what happened to me, I did inform her ENT and they said she may stay longer in the hospital just depending on her recovery.
