hi my son is on day 6 post opp, he is 5 years old and i know he needed the opp cause his tonsils were so big and he got ill alot but he is going through a horrible time, he is in so much pain and is barely eating or drinking he has had to go back to the hospital cause of blood in the nose and and have a ambulance called at 4 in the morning when his nose was gushing blood, he is crying all the time and is so sad and is not himself at all. he is now constipated and the whole thing has so far been the worst 6 days ever for all of us expecially him. i know they say that it is different for every child and im really hoping that every morning will bring a better day. he did need the opp and i know it will get better but the only reason for telling you all the worst bits is to make sure you have as much help and support you can. we was led to belive that day 3 would be the worst but it has been getting worse every day so far. im sorry im not been more helpful i just feel so helpless for my baby boy. i really hope your experience is better.

Hi, i'm 13 and had my tonsils and adenoids removed due to tonsil stones, about 7 cases of strep per year, and, being a strep type c carrier. I'm currently on day 7 of my recovery, by far the worst day so far. Day 1 was a piece of cake, woke up pretty calm, even handing out compliments to my nurses. I drank about 4 cups of water in the 20 minutes i was in the recovery room. We left and in 30 minutes i was at home drinking water. I napped a lot and ate mashed potatoes, macaroni, and even two pretzels. I played with my baby cousin and was, in general fine. It felt like a bad sore throat, nothing I couldn't handle. Day 2 was a bit worse, not much. I was living off of macaroni, mashed potatoes, and some pulled pork. I took amoxicylin -excuse my spelling- every 4 hours. I woke up once a night to take another dose. Day 3 was the same, the only difference was I ate more and napped less frequently. On day 4 a friend came over and spent the night. Feeling fine then, still took my pain medicine every 4 hours. Morning were getting rough, due to my throat being dry. I set an alarm for every hour to wake up and drink something. Day 5 was bad. I was dizzy, and almost passed out a few times. Slight ear pain, throat had a burning sensation but slept pretty well. Day 6 was so much worse. Burning of the roof of my mouth and back of my throat. Couldn't talk or move my neck without intense pain in my throat. Ears were throbbing. Got about 4 hours of sleep. Today has been awful, by far the worse. Constant burning on the roof of the mouth. Cant talk, move, or eat. My ears are still throbbing. Taking ibuprofen every four hours and amxycilin every four hours (ibuprofen two hours before amxcylin). I would say the biggest thing is to take it easy, dont push yourself because you want to get better.

My 8 year old son had his tonsils out and adnoids 5 days ago. No vomiting or anything. Had no problems eating or drinking. He's had a few bad moments but for the most part he's doing better than I did a few years ago when I had mine out. How many more days does he have left before he is "fully healed"?

Having the same issue, my son being 6, had surgery yesterday, after leaving the hospitahospital he drank even ate some pudding and lots of popsicles, today I can't even get himto take a sip of water let alone his medicine or popsicles. He's in a lot of pain and I feel so bad for him, called his doctor said just give him the medicine to ease the pain but he won't even swallow the medicine, he just holds it in his mouth... I have a feeling he's bit doing well and will be making an ER trip. Should I be this concerned?

Thank you sooo much for taking the time to post your positive experience. My 6 year old is scheduled to see an ENT next week and most likely will need this surgery. As of this moment I am freaking out, but reading your post has calmed me down somewhat.

YES YES YES! Thank you so much for this post! I am so glad to see that I am not alone. My 5 year old daughter had her tonsils and adenoids out 5 days ago. It has been pure hell for all of us, mainly her. Day 1-She screamed non-stop after her surgery until we got her home in her bed. She took a 15-20 nap. After the nap, she was up playing and eating soft foods. We are alternating advil/tylenol every 3-4 hours. Everything was great. I was hopeful. Then, that night all hell broke loose. She whimpered and cried for a couple of hours while she slept. Then can the vomit...and then the bloody vomit after that. We panicked and called the doctor at 2 am. He said that she should be ok unless she was actively bleeding from her mouth or nose. We had her suck on some ice which seemed to work. Ever since then, she is up every 1-2 hours screaming at the top of her lungs. She is in so much pain it is as if she doesn't even see us. She screams help me and help me calm down. She grabs her head, neck, and/or ears and flails around. She refuses to take her medicine or drink which makes it worse. She has not has any food in 5 days. She uses the restroom twice a day, and maybe drinks 4-8 ounces of fluids a day. I don't know how much either of us can take of the screaming and howling. We are all sleep deprived. I demanded to see the surgeon again today. He said everything looked fine, but gave her a steroid to help with the inflammation. She is still not eating or drinking. We are all at our breaking point. While I was typing this, she told me that she was hungry. She has refused everything I offer her. She won't even swallow her own spit. my personal opinion is that this is not an out patient surgery. She needs iv fluids and drugs. This tylenol/advil is not getting the job done.

We were informed that maintaining enough fluids is best way to allow the area to heal, dehydration causes more painful and delayed healing. Can on get iced pops or very cold puddings and jello down? That's what mine lived on , jello, pudding, and pops for 5 days . I also kept cool mist humidifier going constantly in her room so it was very moist in room at all times. We ended up getting mine to drink liquid smoothies with cream in them puréed in magic bullet blender also. I wouldn't have hesitated to bring mine into hospital if she couldn't swallow even jello.... Also we had placed cold packs around lower jaw neck when pain was severe. I felt that the pain my child, experienced was beyond home management also. Day 5-6 was particularly hard, but if dehydrated, I would go in for help? The scabs form and then needed to fall off which goes better if they have enough hydration, as scab sites can bleed more if dehydrated? Fudgicles. We had 6 per day. Finally my child 7.5 year old at time of surgery, turned the corner and began to eat soft moist cake on day 7.... And blended homemade chicken broth sweet potatoes soup, and blended oatmeal gruel. It does get all the sudden better day 9-10...
