My 5 year old daughter had her tonsils and adenoids removed at 10:30am Friday, 2/5/16. She woke up crying and in a lot of pain but ate a Popsicle and we came home. I thought she would sleep due to the anesthesia but she was active, awake and happy for the remainder of Friday. We went to bed and of course she slept with me, she woke up crying and screaming in tremendous pain. I've been alternating between ibuprofen and Tylenol every 4 and 6 hours, now she refuses to take meds and I'm lucky to get her to drink a slushy! I know she's hurting but how do I get her to take the meds when she's refusing to eat or drink? Tonight, I put a heating pad on her neck just to see if that will help, it's late and I need to give her some meds before she goes to sleep and I purchased a cool mist humidifier to help with her drying mouth. What else can I do to get her to take the meds? I don't want her to dehydrate and be put back into the hospital.

Ask your surgeon nurse /or pediatrician first, but we found that mixing the liquid pain medicine in a bitif thick pudding took away the burning that the pain liquids caused in throat. later when milk or dairy was allowed by physician post surgery we gave it in theittle bit of whole milk to stop medicine burning feeling. Humidifier on day and night round the vlick helped us, cold packs, NOT heat helped us.

Keep up slushies and liquids !!! We had ipad game on and read to her while she took medicine and the liquid can feel like burning to them , the game and atiry took mind off pain while swallowing meducine but it was very very hard to get it in , but without the motrin mine couldnt drink so we had to keep on top lf pain. Go back to hospital or call surgery center physician etc if child isnt drinking any liquids or able to swallow liquid pain relief. Dehydration is not helpful to the surgical recovery. Ask for medical help by her surgery center if you are at all worried.

My daughter is 6 years old and just had a tonsillectomy and we are on day 9. She has been in alot pain from day 4. We struggle every two hours to get the medicine down and haven't slept a full night yet. The first day was a breeze because she slept most of the day. The second day she woke up throwing up blood and had to go to the ER. They could not get an IV in until 5 nurses and 7 needle sticks later. It was torture. The bleeding stopped after about an hour but if it didn't we would have to go back into surgery. There are so many wonderful stories on here but we are having a rough time. She has thrown up the last couple morning but mostly dry heaves because she barely drinks. I see tears so I know she isn't that dehydrated yet. Just pray each day that she will be better but seems like each day brings a whole new symptom to recover from. Maybe it's because the dr said her tonsils were golf ball size and left bigger wounds to heal? I just want my little girl better again.
