Thank you for this post. I am on day 6 with my 5yr old son. I am literally losing my mind but after reading this, I feel like I just read everything to a tee that is happening here. I feel relieved that all of this is normal.

Oh my goodness we are going the same thing. In addition to the pain (even with a carefully followed med schedule )he seems to be having night terrors and I feel sick to my stomach over the pain he is obviously in. We also struggle with getting the meds in him at night as he is screaming and crying.

I have found everyone's advice so helpful. My 5 yr old is on day 7 and just had the worst night yet. His doctor has had him on ibuprofen since right after surgery. She said the new studies do not show any risk of increased bleeding from ibuprofen and it works better than tylenol. We also had to add some lortab on day 3 as the ibuprofen didn't hold him the whole 6 hours between doses anymore. I am hoping we turn the corner soon. His pain has been completely controlled during the daytime and he is eating and drinking well. Its just the last few nights he has been uncomfortable. Ice cold protein shakes have really helped in the mornings to get some nutrition in him while waiting for the pain meds to kick in and to make sure he has something in his tummy so the meds don't make him feel sick.

We also experience increased pain day 5-6. One round of additional pain medication on top of the ibuprophen (which was working relatively well and better than thebtylenol doses) on day 5-6 put 8 year old in to too many hours of sleep and this ibterrupted her ibuphrophen schedule which seemed to almost make things worse really, We decided to discontinue the affitional opiate based additional medications and go back to cold drinks, humidifiers, and ibuphrophen and we saw her turn the pain corner and feel better day 8-10. By day 10 we were in home stretch but opiate based medication and anesthesia of surgery may have made constipation issue worsen and we ended up needing to go to er for bowel impaction day 14. I would try to be sure that adequate fluids and eventually fiber are being given? We may have avoided the ER bowel problem if wed have been more proactive with that part of post op? Best of luck -things get better fast after the hardest days. Hopefully you are on the tail end of this hard recovery .call your pist surgical team with all questions and concers . They should be able to advise on the pain recovery timeframe. Depending on which surgical method was used. We had heat ablation cauterize type surgical proceedure and days 5-8 were tough. Days 2-3 were tough . By day 10? Much better!

For anyone who's kids are experiencing bleeding, my brother had his tonsils out 2 years ago because of constant infections, he was 28 at the time and when he did he kept experiencing bleeding and throat pain and this was because he went on warm soft foods too fast, which you also did with your daughter but you shouldn't have, and should stay away even from warm foods too, if you give her soup it should be cold because where they cut the tonsils out it needs to heal and even warm food agitates it and will open up the wound and cause bleeding, it takes more than just a week to heal up, it takes up to a month to fully heal up sadly, i know it's not gonna be pleasant for your kids always eating cold soap or cold mushed up carrots but as long as it's not healed you shouldn't even give them warm food or you will agitate where they cut to take out the tonsils.

When my daughter had hers out my doctor gave us a three day dose of steroids around day and it made a huge a huge difference by the next day she was pain free and able to eat after 7 days of just Gatorade slushies.

interesting comment. are you speaking from a medical providers recommendation as to warm hot foods post op? i wish that i had received this type of advice, if it is indeed applicable.

Advil is NOT recommended as it can increase bleeding.

No as i said when my bro had his tonsils out because of constant infection he switched to warm foods too soon and where they cut kept bleeding, my bro is the most gutsy so he couldn't wait lol, so then he had to go back twice to get them to stop the bleeding, it took like a month or so to fully heal up, it's why they just reccomend ice cream, lots of cold water with ice and cold soft foods because even food just warm opens up the incision again when it's not fully healed.

Hello there, BOTH MY BOYS HAD TONSILLECTOMY, ages 7-10. They are on day 7. The first day was great, second day great. I thought hey this is not so bad. Third day kinda feeling sore. Fourth day not good at all, they both took sure a big turn from good to bad. My heart hurt so bad for them. They could barely talk barely swallow. And just upset. Same for day five six. I have had the humidifier on in both rooms since we got home from the hospital, lots and lots of fluids, cold packs for there necks, made sure they are always sitting up high with a straight neck, piggy backing the medicine, Tylenol and Advil. But the pain is just so real. Day seven, they are feeling a little better, I hope we can stay on the feeling better train! Good luck to every parent, it's the hardest thing to watch you kids in pain, and really they just need to get though it.

I'm soooo glad I found you guys ! My 7 year old daughter is day 4 post op- removed tonsils n adenoids - and today decided her throat is so painful she can barely swallow. I'm trying to get fluids into her, and she's such a tiny thing I'm worried her weight will drop! We've travelled to the city so are away from family n friends and it's very hard to watch my baby go through this. I keep telling myself we just gotta get through the next week or so and we'll be like brand new .
