I posted above (I'm the one who has had a boil for 11 years). It turns out that boils in cyclists are fairly common (I'm a cyclist). Boils are also common in diabetics with high blood sugar (which I am also). Somehow bacteria gets under the skin and causes an infection. A boil develops. The body sends out one or two channels (fistulae) to allow the boil to drain. But the boil pocket and fistulae never heal. You can do one of two things: Keep a pad on it all the time, or have surgery. Surgery works most of the time, but not always. Apparently it's not uncommon for boils to never heal.
What I have is not Hidradenitis Suppurativa. I am not familiar with that disease; but if you have multiple boils, perhaps that's your problem. A doctor should be able to tell you.
fistula (singular), fistulae (plural)

I’ve had all of the below interms of appearance, red then purple bulbous boil, v painful on my inner thigh/groin.
After 10 weeks, 3 Doctors, 3 anti biotics, 3 diagnosis (HS, varicose vein, lump node swelling), pain & severe fatigue I finally saw a surgeon on a Friday who diagnosed a carbuncle & I had surgery on the following Monday to cut it out of my groin & along my panty line a bit. I have an open wound about 1+ inch diameter 3/4 inch deep that’s healing well (slow but it’s only 2 weeks). It’s sore but the pain is gone gone gone (along with the bulbous purple lump). Surgery is the only way to go.
