This is my situation almost exactly. I have the Paraguard non-hormonal IUD, which I got a few months after my son was born, so about 14 months ago. My husband and I don't have sex very frequently, but when we do, it can be uncomfortable. I didn't really attribute it to the IUD but I've forgotten what "normal" feels like. I have gotten two UTIs in the last 3 weeks. We don't want a second right now and I'm not supposed to be on hormonal birth control because I get migraines with aura. Using condoms long term is not appealing, but if I get another UTI I'm going to have to do something. I've got a bladder infection right now that has me up all night (antibiotics must not be kicking in yet). Ugh, the things we go through!

I had the mirena iud placed in 4-22-2015. I have had more infections and visits to the the dr. Then ive had with two c sections repeatitive uti infections feeling of a uti after intercourse and with meds perscribed more infections such as bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections . i had it removed in September 2015 and still havent recovered.i contacted attorneys that know this is a real problem but refuse to take my case because the red tape of insurance and hmo protection laws i think every woman who has suffered complications of the iud should ralley and bring a class action lawsuit

My Mirena was placed Nov 2013. I am not the woman i once was, and all signs are leaning towards Mirena being the culprit. I am a 44 year old mother of 4, and still fertile. Married and monogamous. The UTI symptoms started a couple days ago, and my OB cannot see me until Monday, so I asked to have at least a UA/C&S done, but after reading 10 pages of this thread, I am convinced it is indeed time to have it removed. My husband can be snipped and I will have an ablation, because without BC, I call my periods Aunty Hemm, as in hemorrhage. My sex drive is so low, my mood swings are horrid and my periods are bi weekly and painful with cramping. I know what my decision is. I pray you all get answers for your concerns, quickly!

I'm 47, and have been using Mirena for the past 6 years (yes, I had a new one re-inserted because my doctor told me that ITU's and and IUD were unrelated). I have been tired for six years, have been plagued by constant yeast infections that return immediately after treatment, and continue to experience symptoms of IC. Two days ago I insisted my doctor remove the IUD...he tried to discourage me from removing it (????). Immediately, the yeast infection symptoms of chronic itch were gone. I'm still feeling symptoms of IC, but even these have alleviated significantly....I'm praying my body can return itself to normal...it definitely feels better.

Well I was found to have a UTI, put on a 3 day run of antibiotics, and took the last dose this morning. The misery of burning, incontinence and frequency remains. Monday cannot come soon enough! By the way, what exactly is IC?

I recently had my IUD removed a couple of months back and had an ablation to prevent the heavy bleeding the IUD was supposed to assist with. From the first time I had it inserted, I averaged 1 UTI a month since 2013 and still having the same issues. I'm 44 and the last time I had a UTI prior to the insertions was many years ago. Antibiotics help while I'm taking them but the UTI returns literally a couple of days later. I read an article that points to IUD/diaphragms as one of the culprits because it prevents the bladder from emptying fully which can cause the remaining urine to grow bacteria. I'm at a point where I will have my PCP refer me to a urologist to see about having a cystoscopy to make sure it hasn't caused further problems internally. The uneasy part of it all is that my urine is cloudy with an odor days shortly after my antibiotic treatment has completed.

Kristen,

Did removing the IUD help? I've recently begun having IC symptoms and also have a copper iud.

I posted earlier...after two days of having the Mirena removed I started to feel better. I've had it out for almost a month now, and I feel so much better. No more bladder discomfort. All IC symptoms are almost completely gone. I had actually forgotten what it felt like to be normal, as I had used the Mirena for almost 6 years...bladder infections, constant IC, yeast infections....and zero sex drive. I doubted myself when asking to have it removed, as I believed none of what I was experiencing was related to the IUD....boy am I glad I went through with the removal. I will never have one again!!!!!
