Hi there, i have just read your post as im at my witts end trying to understand whats causing the UTI's that i've been having for around 1 year now. At the start my UTI was treated with Antibiotics which actually worked now they arent working, I had alot of pelvic pain too and the Dr thought I had endometreosis. After surgery and a Laparoscopy later-still nothing. I usually get one week in a month where the symptoms pass and I'm not in agony. I am constantly up for hours through the night cradling cups of water and sitting against a radiator, with two young children I find this so hard and tiring although everytime i go to the Dr its a case of, "yeah sounds like a UTI heres more antibiotics, we'll give you ones you havent had before" i had a Copper Coil fitted in April but I was experiencing these UTI symptoms previous to that when i had the POP (proestogan only pill) which i stopped taking as I blamed that for the symptoms. I've tried taking Anti Histamine as thats been suggested, i've changed my diet and stopped eating any foods with irritants to the bladder. I've just had it, as you know uffering from these are horrendous. Any help or suggestions from anyone would be welcomed. Thanks for reading this.

It is with great relief that I read all these posts. I'm not alone! I too have experienced unpleasant issues with my IUD (mainly the discharge and bacterial vaginosis infections). The thing is, up until last night, it never occurred to me that the IUD could be the cause. I always attributed the discharge to age (nearing 40s) and the bacterial vaginosis perhaps my sex toys (yes, being openly honest here). Well, last night I ended up in Urgent Care with quite severe back and abdominal pain. They took a urine sample and ... low and behold, it's a UTI ... borderline Kidney Infection. Luckily the urgent care doctor took my concerns with my IUD seriously and also took vaginal cultures to be tested. Calling my GYN this AM, pronto. I'm ready to get this IUD outta me!

I never had any problems with my first 5 year IUD but I had it replaced after the 5 years was up and with a new 5 year IUD, and I have had repeated UTI's ever since. I never had a UTi prior to this, so I will have it removed in 2 weeks when I have my Tubial Liagation surgery done since my hubby wont get snipped either. My doctors are in denial also, but we know our bodies best sometimes. Take care ladies. RB

Wow, that's crazy you posted this because you described exactly what I have been going through. I had my Mirena IUD inserted back in December 2013 and not too long after that the UTI's started occurring. I was having them consistently on a monthly basis. E coli would be found in the urine cultures and I would be prescribed antibiotics for them. I would probably get a week or two of relief before the UTI returned. I spoke with the Dr. about and was informed on more than one occasion that it was not linked to the IUD and received the hygiene speech. I'm a grown woman and know how to wipe appropriately. To me, it was common sense that the UTI started occurring not long after my Mirena was inserted and I would think the Dr. would at least entertain my suggestion and look into it. At my next appointment, I will bring yours as well as others I've read who have had the same occurrence. Thank you.

I know this is sort of an old topic, but I just had to post a thanks to everybody who shared their stories in here. I've had my IUD for almost 5 years now. It's an experimental hormonal IUD, basically a generic Mirena that Planned Parenthood is testing. I am getting paid for the study and the device itself was free, but I'm done with it.

I've had a shitton of UTIs in the past year, only one of which I had diagnosed/treated with antibiotics (cranberry juice mostly does the trick). That culture did text positive for e. coli. Strangely enough, I had no symptoms that time- my doc found a high WBC count in bloodwork she did for something else and wanted to investigate further. Since then I've had symptoms many times, including right now- I can't stop peeing, my urine is cloudy, etc.

I was really happy with the IUD for the first couple years, but not anymore after all these infections (also had BV twice after switching partners, but I knew that was a risk)...not to mention headaches, weight gain, and more. They make it seem like side effects are so rare with such a low dose of hormone, but obviously not true (I had horrible experiences with several pills and did not like the patch or ring, either).

I will miss my very light periods, but I will survive. Back to condoms. Ugh.

Reading some of these stories is truly like reading about myself. I had the Mirena in for 5 years and had no problems, but on the 2nd one I started suffering from frequent UTI's and suffered from bouts of BV. After the 3rd round of BV I decided I had had enough. Research and Forums like this one made me realise that it was in fact from the Mirena. My gynae informed me that the infections don't actually come from the device itself but from the 2 strings that hang down...that is where the bacteria sits. So when you get a UTI or BV, the creams you get and the antibiotics don't actually get onto the device to kill the bacteria, so you just keep getting re-infected. I have now had the Mirena removed....for good. Since having it removed, I also don't have the constant feeling of wanting to pee, and I also feel that I have more energy. My personal opinion is that when it comes to the Mirena it really is luck of the draw. Sometimes it works and sometimes not.

I am so glad I found this thread!! I have had my coil for just under a year now and had no problems until I got the worst case of UTI I have ever had. I am quite prone to it but I got it so bad - 2 sets of antibiotics didn't sort it out. Eventually after 2 weeks of pain it wore off - but something still didn't feel right to me. Eventually I plucked up the courage to try intercourse again (I was convinced it would bring it back) and it seems ok but 2 days later I started to feel the twinge of a UTI AGAIN!!!! I have had this feeling reoccuring for 3 weeks now. Every time I had my pee tested it came back negative for infection but I knew something wasn't right. I think this could be the answer. Looks like I may have to have my copper coil removed!

I am not sure what to do about my Paraguard IUD. I never had UTIs until I got it and now I get them so often (including EVERY time I have sex) my doctors also told me the iud wouldn't cause them but as everyone else said here it seems to. I cant stand having UTIs anymore so if taking out the IUD would work I'll do that but I'm not sure it will. Has anyone's utis gone away since they had theirs taken out? Also do i have to ask to get it cultured and all that stuff other people on the thread were mentioning to check for any causes it may have had? I'd really appreciate any and all advice

Hi, I am from Sydney Australia. I have had the odd bladder infection from time to time. Being 40, married 16 yrs with a 10 and 14 yr old, that is expected. Oct 2013 I had a urine infection, it went away with treatment ( I had lost 20 kgs and was working hard with diet and exercise - I was a dance school owner) Jan 2014 had a Mirena inserted, April 2014 I rolled my ankle at home ( done 1000s times before) and actually popped out 3 discs in my back = beyond painfull, took near 6 weeks to recover with physio, pain meds, lots of bed rest. Starting to get back on track, Mid May 2014 slightly curve forward to pick up a pillow = BACK FRACTURES L2 fractures..... 3 weeks recovery time, severe pain ( all the time thinking how on earth did my back get like this when I was in the best shape of my life - certainly the last 20 yrs of it)......then June - I get another UTI... back is still killing me, pain, night sweats, fatigue, and now severe buring and all the usual UTI symtoms......blood tests, urine tests then MRI - I now have been diagnosed with Ostiomylitis - E Coli in MY SPINE - YEP the DISC BETWEEN L2 and L3 vertebrae has been EATEN AWAY from the infection. MY UTI had travelled to my spine..... 6 weeks in Sydney's best hostpital. severe antibiotics, pain meds, nerve medication, then 4 months recovery at home, with physio, hydro, pain meds. Had to close my dance school = from the hospital bed, my poor children had mum in hospital and then when I came home = it was just really bad. It really took until Nov, Dec 2014 that I started feeling better. 2015.... Started dance teaching for some other schools, slowly getting back to normality though still seeing hospital doctors in several clinics. No surgery required as bones are starting to heal and fuse together...APRIL 2014 - UTI again.... antibiotics, all gone......end MAY 2014 - severe UTI - hospital and severe antibiotics given......all gone......THIS WEEK - JUNE 18 - UTI AGAIN !!!!!! - NOW, only NOW are we considering that it might be the MIRENA. OMG my whole world, my family, my gorgeous children, my passion and love of dance - all this changed and I feel that I have pretty much lost a year of my life = I cannot even begin to imagine that it might be caused by this device. I have a gyno appointment in 2 weeks and will look at getting the device taken out - So, I should probably have this tested ... YES ???? thoughts ??? xx

I just got the paragard inserted a month ago and have had two UTI's. I'm not prone to them so I wondered if the IUD could be causing them. Looks like I'll be having this removed. It's a shame because I feel like I went through the insertion and a heavy, long period for nothing. This thing had been nothing but a pain in the a**.

Tell hubby getting snipped isn't that bad (I had it done about six weeks ago myself). Sex is better afterward with no worries. And it's either that, or he gets no sex from you.

The IUD is not placed near your bladder, therefore it would not be the cause of your UTI.

I got my IUD implanted last summer after baby #2. Since then I have had 3 UTI; whereas before I had 1 (after visiting a waterpark). On Saturday I went in to get antibiotics and my obgyn asked for me to complete a urine sample. It came back positive for E coli. I am now 100% positive that my IUD has E coli on it and that is causing me to have the UTI's.

I am so happy to have some type of evidence that my Morena IUD is causing my issues. I was also diagnosed with interstitial cystitis several years ago. I had a diff IUD then same brand. Could it be linked possibly?! The fact that they found e Colin on the one woman's IUD is terrifying! What if it had somehow pierced her abdominal wall?!? Septic shock anyone?! Yikes. I'm getting mine removed as soon as possible!!
