Can you tell me how long after removal your symptoms eased up? I've had my iud out for a week and still feel like I have a uti even after antibiotics. Thank you!!

I realize this is an old thread now, but for lack of current information, I feel obliged to post my similar experience. I just got the Mirena IUD in on Tuesday, the 5th. I decided to get one because my periods had recently become quite heavy and my cramps extremely painful.
I'd read that the Mirena would ease these menstrual symptoms and I was really excited to get it. After a very painful insertion (it felt like my cervix was being stabbed), I took it easy and let the cramps subside. The very next day, I started getting UTI-like symptoms: painful urination with occasional urgency.
I found some CIPRO in the house (I'd had many UTI's before), so I started taking 250mg twice a day, glad that I didn't have to go to a dr. and get lectured about how to avoid UTIs. After day 2, I usually knock down my symptoms with the CIPRO, but no such luck this time. I decided to go to a Dr. after all, thinking that perhaps the CIPRO was too far out of date, but when she looked at my urine, there were no signs of infection.
I made another appointment with my primary doctor for this Friday, but I'm worried she'll pass my UTI-like symptoms off as an unrelated issue and put me on more antibiotics (and then I'll get a yeast infection, etc.).
After reading through some other forums, I saw that some women were diagnosed with having eColi from an infected IUD. I hope this is not what's happening. I've put so much money and trust and pain into this thing hoping that the short-term pain would be made up for in long-term contraception and menstrual pain reduction, but now I feel worried and betrayed.
There's so little information about this... just a bunch of condescending answers from the medical establishment that effectively drowns out the voices of hundreds of women who are having real symptoms!

Paraguard in for almost three years. Frequent UTIs for the past year, uncomfortable sex, and very heavy periods.

I've been getting infections for the last three or four months and my iud has been in for 13 months. I contacted the maker of the iud and they said they have never heard anyone complaining about UTI linked to the iud. I feel like I'm always on antibiotics. I'm going to have this removed as soon as possible. Thanks

I am 50. Got IUD 2 yrs and 8 months ago due to long period and being on Warfarin with birth control pills was not a good combo said my gyno. I got 3 UTI's last month...March 1, March 17 and March 28.! Only had one 20 years ago. Had IUD taken out after finding these stories and have had no UTI's since! Urine culture showed E. coli. No sex since Aug 2014. My guess is the string got contaminated after all that time.

I have had my IUD for nearly five years now and only started getting chronic UTIs in the past few months. I had similar thoughts as many other women here... what could it be, sex, the condoms my partner was using, random weird girl stuff (we know there is tons of that)... I am super healthy and hypersensitive to my body so always try to pin just what is causing something. Finally one day I thought the IUD is the only thing that would consistently mess stuff up down there. As I am getting to the end of my term now (5 years) I will be getting it removed and probably ASAP now that I think it might have this negative effect. I have the copper T (not Merena) and was such a believer. Yes the periods can be challenging (especially at first) but I cannot stand the pill and any unnatural/hormonal options. It's a real shame Doctors seem to not be a reliable source because I would love to speak with them about some kind of solution, how to avoid the UTIs but still use the IUD... If anyone has any advice it would be appreciated! BTW pure cranberry juice is a good alternative to antibiotics to treat the UTIs.

I googled iud and uti roughly 2 years ago when I first had it inserted, found bits of info but there seems to be much more now. Because I am prone to kidney infections I just thought maybe coincidence but looking over last 2 years I have had my fair share of infections but cystitis mainly and if left too long without treating it travels to my kidney I had reimplantation of ureter as a child plus my bladder does not empty fully but never caused major issues until iud, sex definitely provokes it problem I've never had before, I do also remember the nurse saying the strings are a little long but I did nothing about it, I also remember being on a week's antibiotics and still had symptoms but tingly when weeing Dr tested urine all clear, thought nothing of it. I'm here now as I have an infection but of a worrier so thought I'd have a nose round. Weirdly I've suffered from thrush since I was 16 I'm 38 now thrush has completely gone since having iud.

Wow i had my iud put in at a time where i wasnt very sexually active and never once had a uti but eventually as i got more active in bed i began getting uti's like crazy after the first one it was about 2-3 times a month, i eould have dreams about having a uti and wake up in horrible pain usually around 3am which sucks considering the worst pain lasts hours before even a little relief i basically just slept on the toilet about 3-4 days out of the month my gyno said it wouldnt have anything to do with my iud but reading this im furious! I wish i knew months ago that this was probably my issue thinking back on all the horrible sleepless nights from cramps uti's back pain and over accesive bleeding i've realized its not worth hirting my body i've even been prescribed tylenol3, tramadol, and even hydrocodone (as a young teen) for the cramping pain my body is done with the BS STAY AWAY FROM IUDS!!!! I have an appointment this week to get mine out and ive never been so excited

I had my IUD inserted last year as my last option for contraceptives. I was on Yaz before that for 4 years needless to say that caused me a lot of problems as a result I can not do hormonal prevention anymore (I had a DVT). I had an copper IUD inserted. I must say since then its been nothing but hell. I went from chronic back lower back pain which just disappeared to now chronic UTI. I was on antibiotics last month, Im on antibiotics again this month. I have made the decision to remove this IUD this week. I am a bit worried though cause it means I can not use anything else for prevention...how sustainable are condoms in a marriage....

And here's the literature "Recurrent extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli urinary tract infection due to an infected intrauterine device" by Chee-Kin Hui. It says that the E.Coli stick to the plastic on the IUD.
I'm unsure if this study is peer reviewed but it only has one test study (which generally isn't a good process). Irrespective of that I think there is enough evidence on this forum for me to get mine out after 4 infections in 6 months. Actually looking forward to it, hopefully no more infections!

"The IUD is not placed near your bladder, therefore it would not be the cause of your UTI"
If bacteria on a penis can cause a UTI than an IUD with strings in the area where the penis goes MUST be able to cause a UTI, providing the bacteria can survive on it. Check the literature "Recurrent extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli urinary tract infection due to an infected intrauterine device" Chee-Kin Hui. It has been found to cling to the plastic.

I had a merena iud for about 7 years and just last year had it replaced with a new one. I've had chronic uti's. I'll be on an antibiotic and it will seem like it clears, but it comes right back. The most recent urine tests only show a small amount of white blood cells, vs other tests that showed a large amount of nitrates (nitrites) as well. The dr seemed perplexed as to why I was feeling discomfort due to the lack of other normally present organisms for a uti. So glad I found this post, I think I'm definitely going to get my iud removed. I just hope it's not as painful as the insertion!!
