This post was SO helpful. THANK YOU. I've been struggling with this exact same issue. I've been dealing with this for almost a year now. I have had the absolute worst "UTIs" in the past year and VERY frequent. My doctors keep telling me that it is not a UTI and that they don't know where the infection is coming from. I've been on antibiotics for this for 5 months now and am building up a resistance. I have also had abdominal pain that I can't compare to anything else. I have seen multiple doctors and they have all told me that it can't be my IUD... after researching half the night, I'm positive it's my IUD causing problems. I get it removed Friday. I'm not sure if I've ever been more excited to see my OBGYN.

I got my IUD put in in November 2013. I did not have any issues with it and was pretty happy until February 2015. I woke up one night with the strong burning in vulva area. There was no discharge, no signs of STD. When I went to doctor, I was told that this has nothing to do with the IUD and I was diagnosed with the chronic vulva pain - vulvodynia and was prescribed Metronidazole for 2 weeks. When I was taking antibiotic it was all fine, but the pain and burning came right after the course was done. So, I had 3 courses of Metronidazole. Pain was gone by itself in the beginning of April and never came back until June 2015. I saw another doctor for the re-evaluation. All test came back negative for the yeast infection, STD, etc. So, I was told that it's Mirena causing it. My regular doctor decided to try another course of antibiotics and this time they were for UTI. After taking it for 2 weeks straight in July the pain went away and did not came back until end of October. That is when I decided that Mirena has to go. It was taken out on 10/29/2015 and I still have same symptoms. Metronidazole does not help and only kicks in 5 hrs after taking. After reading this article, I do think maybe I have UTI and if I will take something particular for this, UTI will be gone and with no Mirena, it, hopefully, will never come back.

I think it is extremely important and widely overlooked to consider the role of IUDs in UTIs. Within the span of 10 months from initially getting my IUD, I had 14 UTIs and 2 kidney infections. At one point, I was going into the doctor's office every 2 weeks to get a new round of antibiotics to treat infections. I found some resources online (a few case lawsuits against IUD brands) suggesting a possible link to UTIs. Out of desperation, I visited a gyno to have the IUD removed. She had difficulty, referred me to another and eventually I had to have the IUD removed surgically (not as scary as it sounds). It's been a year now and I haven't had a UTI since the removal. Now I have no hard evidence the IUD was causing the UTIs but this is some pretty damning correlation. If you are suffering from chronic UTIs as I was, I would seriously suggest getting the IUD removed.

Ah, one more comment. I did also have irritated urethra symptoms for about a month after the removal, but it did eventually get better.

My Mirena was removed October 9 and since removal, no further bladder leakage, no more UTI, no more low libido (Hubby is loving that!), my moods are stable, and I can honestly szay the fog has been lifted after having MIRENA for 23 months. I know that I know that I know the MIRENA is the reason. I am on a facebook page, called BAN MIRENA and it is a great place to chat and share and be encouraged.
I was worried about a MIRENA CRASH that seems to happen to so many, but I was spared. I drank half my body weight in ounces of water, took my multi-vitamin and started including extra vitamin D. I am feeling very fortunate, to say the least. I will continue to follow this thread to be of any help!!

i have had iud for four months, and have had two back to back uti's. however, i have had many uti's before i had the iud.

I also hv had increase uti with mirena. might be my age as I was 48 when it was inserted but my gyn says there is no other evidence of low estrogen

I too have suffered from CHRONIC UTI, BV, and Yeast infections for over a 1 1/2 yrs. (since Oct 2014) I have had mine for 8 years. Plus, gained 30lbs that would never go away no matter how hard i tried. I went to over 12 physicians to get relief. Many were condescending and rude. I was told I was "crazy" and "dirty" because the only way you keep getting these is from not showering. Gross and really? I'm 44 years old and I finally found a physician who would listen!!! He said yesterday, "lets rip it out". So that is what we did and it is linked to the IUD. WE HAVE TO FIGHT FOR OUR HEALTH! The bloated belly went down some this morning. It was strange. I still feel like i am "weeping" but I cannot wait to see how i feel in a few months. I would like to sleep through the night, not have a metal taste in my mouth, tired, crabby, no sex drive, no energy, bloated, moody. chronic hip pain, and the list goes on. TAKE IT OUT!

Please don't get the shot....I had two rounds of it and it made my hair fall out and caused histamine intolerance

When i originally got my iud 20 years ago, my doctor specifically said that if you get an infection, sexually transmitted or otherwise, it will definitely attach to your iud and move into your uterus. This makes the infections more dangerous and hard to get rid of.

You are right. It's been 10 months since I have the Minera and I already had 3 UTI. I am now with Cipro and it's a pain cause my partner thinks that I am with other sexual partners because of the UTI, and is not true. This can affect your life style. I am in a point having it removed and deal with the cramps and periods.

I got mine removed in October and had no symptoms up until last week when we started the pill. Apperantly, there are some hormones that cause the pain, regardless of its in your uterus or you take it orally. But I would get IUD removed asap. It will change your life from many prospectives
