I have had my mirena iud for nearly 4 years now. Before having it I had almost no problem. After having it inserted I have had a CONSTANT UTI and behave been hospitalized 6 different times for kidney infections. No single course of antibiotics did the trick. Neither did the 6 month course. After seeing a Urologist and a Rhumatologist (they thought it may be lupus) I still have no concrete results. I agree with the earlier post that despite the fact that a gyno says there is no link between the two, you can't fight the numbers or symptoms. I've never been one to get on board with the whole lawyer deal, but I'm not sure what else to do now.

Checking back in: I had my paraguard iud out a month ago and have not had a uti since! I am now using NFP combined with a barrier method as a non-hormonal form of birth control. Just a caution to the women on the fence about having their iuds taken out- they've now been linked to infertilty as a result of uterine infection. Pretty serious and longlasting consequences.

Ive been getting a UTI about once a month. Now that I look back I can see they started becoming more frequent after the IUD. Ive dealt with UTIs since I started having sex but not like this. My husband and I both pee and shower before and after intercourse but even like that I still get them. I have the 10 year IUD and I think im just going to take it out. How is your life after removing the IUD?

I had a Mirena IUD put in a couple of years back and almost instantly started getting severe UTIs. Nothing I did seem to stop them. I was constantly washed out from the continuous stream of antibiotics. Doctors swore blind that it was something wrong with my system, diet, hygene and not the IUD. They couldnt find any reason of course, so took their tried and true standard approach to everything and put me on a bandaid script which drip fed me antibiotics constantly. I then started to get other vaginal infections which were extremely unpleasant- yeast and also something that changed my natural odour to a less then pleasant alternative. This particular infection was persistant and awful, coming back the instant the antibiotics were finished. By this time I had had enough of Doctors brazenly telling me that all this discomfort was not being caused by the foriegn body they had placed in my uterus, that my normally healthy body was not reacting to what is to all intents and purposes an obstruction, that I didnt know anything about my own health, that I should listen to the experts. I demanded its removal. Low and behold there was a clot adhering to one of the strings- hence the odour causing infection. The UTIs and yeast infections that had dogged me constantly for almost a year ceased immediately. Yet I am still supposed to swallow the nonsense that the two arent related? Since then I have all but sworn off Doctors, most are incompetant and many just dont care about anything but their fee. I dont take anything and am not on any birth control. Health wise Ive never been better. Once you introduced their perscribed rubbish into your system it reacts and the balance is thrown out meaning you have to then take something else to counteract those effects and so on and so on. Pharmceutical companies just keep getting fatter and Doctors love all the kick backs.

Hi there,

I had a copper coil fitted in March 2013.

Since then I had constant urine infections even twice a month. I was treated with many antibiotics but as soon as the course would finish I would get another infection. I was assured by few doctors that the coil wouldn't cause my infections...

I started looking for the answers myself, I was thinking that maybe my partner had some kind of bacteria, or maybe I'm allergic to something or maybe I am wearing to tight trousers... and then I found few posts on internet, few women were describing what I was going through and wrote that the coil can actually cause urine infections.

At some point I was so exhausted with the constant pain that on the day that my "new" infection started I just booked an emergency appointment and I asked my doctor to remove the coil.

That was in June 2013 and since then I HAVEN'T HAD ANY URINARY INFECTION :-)))))))))

This is to all the women who are going through what I was going through, if you have constant urine infections and had copper coil fitted please JUST REMOVE IT!!!!

All the best :-)

Hi, I'd just like to tell everyone that I had an IUD for 5 years and that's the time I've had a UTI.  I was going crazy.  I've seen various doctors, two urologists in two different continents, and I was also sent to a gynecologist.  I had my IUD removed in Nov. 2012 and I am a person now!!!  I was a thing.  I was going crazy having 3 UTI's a week, being very nervous and anxious and all that is gone.  I don't take the daily low dosage antibiotic for the UTI I’ve been taking for years, I don't take any cranberry pills anymore, nothing...  I drive out of my house not thinking of what can happen, I just go and enjoy without being nervous or anxious anymore.  I feel FREE and new!!!

HI EVERYONE,

I was ADMITTED, they could not get my heart down for the first day or my fever to stay down it would rise through tylenol , they had to place cold packs on my body to help lower my temp nausea meds so i would stop throwing up, they had to pump me full of fluid 24-7 and double doeses of anitbiotics, my obgyn came in and refused to take my IUD out in hospital, i went the hell for five days in the hospital, i was realeased this morning and am suppose to walking tomorrow to have my paraguard removed tomorrow, i am on antibiotics, porbiotics because antibiotics kills even good bacteria, pain meds, stool softeners, i have to follow up with infectous disease doctors and primary care doctor in week in a half,

Thanks to everyone for their helpful comments, now I have decided after two years of backache and uti's and much upset I will get this thing out of me. I will also get it tested (if possible). I am disappointed as  know I will now have those really heavy periods again and be anaemic. This time around I will change my diet (as I had to anyway re: UTI's) to get more iron. It's so annoying as I am sterilized and need no contraception which was meant to be good for me-since turning 40 my periods are heavy, so the coil had to be inserted.

Thanks again

Ladies, before you completely decide to remove your IUD, try taking probiotics.  The probiotics will take about a month before you can really tell a difference so give it time.  Unfortunately the very thing used to treat UTI's is the number 1 cause of UTI's: antibiotics!! Cipro is the worst to cause UTI's. I actually never had a UTI until I was prescribed cipro after cutting my finger on a test tube in microbiology lab. Antibiotics destroys not only the bad bacteria but also all the good bacteria that protects your body against the bad bacteria.  I highly advise taking probiotics after any round of antibiotics to build your good bacteria up. Hope this helps!!!

It brings me great relief to read this. I have had my IUD since August 2013, ever since I have had lower back pain, heavier and longer periods, constant discharge- which is all uncomfortable. I went to my Gynaecologist and told her about the symptoms I had, assuming they would be related to my bronze IUD. She said there is no relation, but would run some tests. The results came out and she noted I have a severe Upper UTI - so far I have taken 3 courses of antibiotics, and I still have lower back pain- which has now made me worried about my kidneys (assuming the complications may lead to a kidney failure). After reading your posts, I'm definite that my symptoms and UTI are linked. I will be removing it asap and further investigate other birth control options since the pill does not do me any good. Thank you ladies!

I've had a mirena for 3.5 years now. About 2 months ago, I started experiencing uti symptoms. I've been on antibiotic 3x now (cipro twice and levaquin). I went to my urologist thinking I was having bladder spasms since my utis don't feel that horrible at first. But I can't get rid of the burning feeling, uti, pinching feeling. I've tried bladder spasm meds and it doesn't help. It does some worse after intercourse. But there have been a few random days I've felt no symptoms at all, which seems strange to me. But after reading all of these posts, I'm thinking maybe it's my iud. My periods do seem watery. Guess I'm calling my GYN tomorrow for an appt. I'm tired of the pain, meds and not knowing what's wrong with me. Thank you ladies for posting!!!

I've had mirena for about 2-3 years and I've had nothing but problems. Every month I have a uti followed by a yeast infection. I didn't kno what was going on and then I heard about all the problems iud's can cause so I've been researching my problem and it keeps going back to the iud. I want to get it removed but I can't take pills and I want to try the shot but I've heard bad things about that also....birth control sucks

I had the Paraguard inserted in Feb 2007(Planned Parenthood, which for the record I fully support).  I soon had chronic (every 4-6 weeks) vaginosis (never had before) which required treatment over and over with Flagyl (powerful antibiotic which made me very sick and therefore, very anxious when the infections kept coming back). I discussed this with my PCP who treated me for the infections and she assured me that the IUD couldn't be the problem, when I suggested it.  I had her remove it in Nov. 2011.  It tested positive for E. Coli.  I was shocked!!

Since the removal, no more infections.  None.  This is a real complication. I will not use an IUD again and it's disappointing as I was hopeful for a non-hormonal birth control.

PS. My periods lightened up as well in flow and length and pain.

Hope this help.
