I had the Mirena first almost 9 years ago with little problem. After I had it removed last year (January 2016) and had the Paraguard put in, I've had many different health issues. Insanely high blood pressure, headaches among other things. The worst is the UTIs. They happen more and more frequent. I went to the gyno this week, again, for all the pelvic pain and UTIs and she referred me to a urologist for Interstatial Cystitis treatment. IC is chronic, unrelenting bladder pain. My family dr suggested getting the paraguard last year and I disregarded her. Now, I'm convinced it's the IUD and/or copper toxicity. It's exhausting to worry about my bladder non stop. It's ruled my life for the last year and I'm ready to change. I'm making an appointment to get it out and will follow up as I progress I think it's important to hear the "after removal" stories too and wish more ladies would share their followups.

Same for me. I never had an UTI before I had an IUD. First I had a Mirena IUD and my UTIs were rare. Thus it did not bother me too much and I also did not get the link. I had maximum 2 per year and my physician was already worried and sent me to cytoscopy, where they did not find anything. That is already 10 years ago. I started going urinating after intercourse, that did the trick for me (even that was not suggested by a physician, I just had to figure myself that it is related to intercourse...). But then I got another IUD, copper this time. Whereas with the Mirena I was in a relationship, with the copper I was mostly single and did not have intercourse so often. I kept on urinating after intercourse, but suddenly my bladder infection got more frequently even though I had way less sex... When I then found a new partner 2.5 years ago my bladder infections were there every month. I tried everything from Mannose, Cranberries, Uva Ursi, Golden Seal, Eight Righteous Tea Pills, chaning pH of urine... All of them kind of worked for lowering the chance of getting them or / treatment (sometimes I got rid of the UTI by using these herbs). But I was only able to get the frequency down to 1 per three month or so and treatment of an UTI stopped working after a while by using these herbs. Finally I did more and more research and considered more and more the possiblity that my UITs are linked to IUDs. Whcih was tricky for me because I had an IUD for 10 years already and never connected them to UTIs when they were still rare. I found this forum and a research article and a physician (UTI specialist that did another cytoscopy on me) said that it might be the IUD. Finally I decided to get rid of it (my gynecologist was not convinced)... That was a year ago. NO BLADDER INFECTIONS SINCE!!! What a release. No herbs, no crazy cleanliness, just a perfectly normal life is back! Temperature method / cervix and condoms... That is my birth control know.... Works like a dream and I know my body now!! (Birth control hormones are not an options for me since I have a high risk for thrombosis). Hope that helps y'all!!!

HI All! I have been experiencing so much of the same issues: chronic UTI's, kidney infections, yeast infections, bacterial vaginitis, and bleeding after sex. It's been a constant battle. The only thing that makes logical sense to me, is that it is the IUD that is making it extremely sensitive or there is (like others mentioned in this blog) an infection that is attached the IUD. I have the Paragaurd IUD, and I have had to replace it already because it was placed incorrectly the first time. Reading all these other responses and stories has really helped me understand and confirm what I (and we all) knew was already true. Thank you all so much! I am calling the doctors today to make an appointment to remove it.
