I got my IUD in 2007 and in 2015 got my first UTI !!
So painful , I was in agony and bed ridden . The symptoms were severe . Form very painful sharp/stabbing feeling and Constant painful throbbing in the virginal area . Not to mention the extreme burning sensation during urination . Continued to get them frequently . Not to mention the longer period duration and much heavier flow . Having to use both a tampon and a Pad at the same time to prevent going through . I had it switched out for a new one in 2016 . The OBGYN convinced me it was the best form of birth control after all and that maybe all I needed was a new one . And here I go again still having extremely painful UTI's . Today , January 16, 2018 I finally had it removed at the ER . After having this UTI 7 days and being on antibiotics and pain killers for the excruciating pain ! And still no improvement . I just got home and found this chain / link with all you ladies experiencing all the same as me . I decided to research it because I knew it had to be linked to this IUD ! Thank You all for sharing you're experience . And good bye to this form of birth control ! I only wish I would of found this link much earlier so I could of sent mine to be tested also.

I'm 44 too. I too have the copper IUD and recurrent UTI's for 7 months. I have an appointment to get my IUD out this Friday and now I'm going to have it tested! It seems like I get a UTI the day after having sex too. GREAT INFORMATION LADIES! THANK YOU!!

Ive had my Copper IUD for almost 2 years and a half. And I can’t even remember how many frequent UTIS ive had. After the first two i automatically thought it’s the IUD ive never had UTIS like this. My dr also laughed at the fact when u mentioned could it be my IUD causing this. After reading this thread I’m gonna cancel out all variables and going to get it removed and tested

I would take it out and see how it goes because the same thing has happened to me! I've had severe, recurring uti symptoms for the past year, almost guaranteed the day after sex. After a lot of research it dawned on me that I had my copper iud inserted about a year ago. I've since taken it out and so far I haven't had any further issues. I really wonder if this is something they haven't discovered yet in the medical world and it surprises me.

Hi I've just had my mirena coil replaced after being very happy with it for the first 5 years. However I've only had this one in for 5 weeks and have already had 3 urinary infections, all of them appearing less than a day after having sex.
It has to be linked to the coil, I will talk to the doctor when I go back to see her and am considering having the coil removed. Very strange it was fine with my first coil.

I just wanted to mention that I have had my IUD copper for just under three years and it is great! Best birth control ever. However last year I got about 8 UTIs and only once took antibiotics and otherwise never was showing infection from tests. A friend of mine had told me about d-mannose and it is the cure !! I take it everyday now (it’s a natural occurring sugar that your body does not process as normal sugar - so safe for diabetics) and it basically pulls out e.coli from your bladder. When I have sex I just take a higher dose for the day. I still wake up with some discomfort (and perhaps not helping that I love coffee) but as soon as I take a d-mannose supplement it goes away. I am thinking of removing my IUD but can’t think of a better hormone free solution, other than natural family planning which I don’t think I can trust. I would rather take d mannose everyday and keep my IUD in until I want to get pregnant. D-mannose ladies ! It is a miracle!!!!

I’ve had my Mirena IUD for 2 years now and absolutely love it. I decided to get an IUD because I suffered from extremely painful periods that would cause my to vomit and put my life on hold for a week every month. I suffered terrible cramps for the first few weeks after insertion but have loved it ever since.
About a year ago I was treated for BV and have been seen so many times for yeast infections and UTI’s. I now seem to have a flare up of a UTI ever couple months and it is incredibly draining.
Now that I think about this, this has all be accurring after the insertion of my IUD. I’m so careful about protecting myself against UTI’s and live in a constant state of paranoia worrying that I will get one again. I’ve been to the doctor so many times and am just re prescribed antibiotics.
After finding this forum I’m seriously considering getting it removed. Now I’m just scared about my painful periods coming back.

Ive had my IUD since 2012 and have probably had at least 4 UTi’s a year since then. I had testing every year for the standard STI’s and come back negative for anything. My doctors also laugh at me when I mention the correlation between the IUD & the UTI but after reading sooo many similar stories I know this is most likely the culprit. My IUD is copper and the bacteria is always ECOLI. Not only do I wash after intercourse but I’m super clean when it comes to washing, peeing etc. I’m starting to wonder if enough people have ECOLI on their IUD’s should’nt they recall them or have a class action lawsuit filed? Some kind of investigation should be done!

I have been on paragard for 9 months now and i have had REPETITIVE Urinary Tract Infections. Every month it seemed to be right before my period i would get one. I have type 1 diabetes and the insulin i was on had UTI as a side affect. I stopped that medication with high hopes in solving the problem but today i have now woke with another and its the worst one yet. I called my Endocrinologist and they set me up an apt with urologist. I feel the Paragard is the next culprit.

I'm also experiencing the same thing with repeated UTI, Ive had the mirena in for 4 years and just recently been treated for UTI for the last 6 months over and over again. Also my daughter just got one implanted and has been to the hospital 3 times for UTI. Im getting it removed asap, and getting it tested, I'll tell my daughter to do the same.
