Hello, i'm so glad I found you folks.
Around me, no one seems to understand coriander (as we call it in france) or cilantro allergy exists.
I used to love it and ate it quite regularly, but starting a few years ago i started to react.
As soon as I happen to taste it, my head feels hot and spinning. Feels like breathing is harder, as if i were panicking.
Lately, i've had noticeable physical reactions (wich actually make people believe me more about the allergy),
With my eyelids getting all swollen after 15 minuts.
I do hope it doesn't evolve further than that.
I'm currently travelling in south east asia, wich is awesome, but extremely tricky with coriander.
In a lovely burmese market, i litteraly stumble accross a huge pile of freshly chopped cilandro - worst breath i took ever

"It is important to know that coriander is the seed of cilantro so if you're allergic to one you are to the other."
Not so. While it is true that coriander seed = cliantro seed, it is not true that an allergy to one means an allergy to the other. It is possible to be allergic to both, of course. But some who have a reaction to the leaf have no reaction to the seed. I am very allergic to cilantro, but use coriander seed regularly.
It is bizarre that so many people resist the idea that one can be allergic to cilantro. I think the problem stems from the fact that many people find the flavor of cilantro disgusting. (This, by the way, is believed to be genetically determined.) So, they equate the two and think cilantro-allergics are just being whiney.
A recent visitor from Thailand cooked a wonderful meal for friends. I warned him that I a allergic to cilantro. So he only put " a little bit" in each dish -- then was deeply offended that I could only eat the steamed rice!

Hello, I have the allergy as well. I first noticed several years back when I would out to lunch at a high end Mexican restaurant almost daily. I would get back to the office and I would be lathargic for about 1 to 2 hours. It was about 5 years later that I finally narrowed it down. It really makes me feel like c**p! I am very sorry to hear of you severe syptoms... God Bless!

I also only react to the leaf. There mere smell of the leaf will make me nauseous and it can almost render me unconscious . Like yourself I can use and ingest the dried seed.

I'm positive I'm allergic to cilantro. I tried a new soup at work yesterday that everyone was just raving about. It tasted lime c**p to me, and within 10-15 min. My guts were killing me my toung felt lime I had chewed up a million mini razor blades. Its been over 12 hours and I'm still wishing my body would either vomit or disperse from the other end. I am miserable. My gut is killing me.

I believe I have had an allergic reaction to cilantro, my mouth feels like it is on fire and it is swelled. According to my allergist an allergic reaction is swelling, or hives. An intolerance is nausea and throwing up, I thought I was allergic to seafood for years and she said it was an intolerance and I could build my tolerance by eating it, but I don't feel like I want to be sick just to build my tolerance.

Yes. That is an allergy. I used to love eating my aunt's fresh salsa with chips. I would get so sick afterwards. I didn't make the connection for a whole year. I just thought I had eaten something bad each time.
A doctor helped me find the common denominator was cilantro.
I just found out today that oregano also does the same thing to me.

I suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and fresh cilantro, as well as dried coriander in spices, cause severe abdominal pain.

Hi. I am personally allergic to cilantro. When ever I eat a healthy portionf it I get violently ill almost instantly like you would if you got food poisoning. It is a very unusual allergy and very hard to pin down since the herb is used in a lot of dishes. I recommend your brother stay away from coriander seeds as well, as they are the seed of the cilantro plant. Best of luck!

Just tonight we were at The Melting Pot with friends. One of the cooking oils being prepared had fresh cilantro put into it. The steam came right towards my fav. I immediately started having trouble breathing and had to run outside. Eventually it got better and I sat at the other end of the table for the rest of the meal. I have never thought I had a reaction to cilantro, but I've never really liked the last if there was much of it in a recipe. I am assuming that was the culprit for my reaction. My sinuses are swelled, my lips feel a little swollen, still having difficulty breathing after taking a benadryl and my inhalers. Up at 2:00 at night with jitters and headache and all of the prior. Since I don't think I ingested any, does just smelling it cause these reactions? I have allergic rhinitis and mild asthma - but react drastically to inhaled pollens & fumes - i.e. solvents, mildew, etc.

I just developed the allergy over the summer and took me a few painful weeks to figure out what it was. Cilantro causes severe cramps, nausea, and diarrhea for me.
