I had a reaction to cilantro a week ago. It start burning and itching on my hands and when I woke the next day I had hives and a very swollen lip! I took Benadryl and used ice on my lip. The hives lasted for four days and my lip was swollen for one day. Scary stuff! I have always eaten cilantro ... First time I had a reaction. I will avoid it like the plague now!

I've just been trying to figure out my issues are. I get severely ill after I eat certain foods. Cilantro is one of them. At first I thought it was food poisoning. I only ever get sick when I eat out and choose the wrong foods. One of them is tacos, which usually has cilantro or avocado's both seem to bother me. Unless its just that they put cilantro in the guacamole? Anyways... I feel the pain in my stomach INSTANTLY and there is no stopping the attack that I get. Severe pain in my stomach and back. Sometimes vomit, sometimes diarrhea, others times just the pain. It usually only lasts about an hour or so. But makes me scared to eat anything! I am now getting some testing done to see what exactly it is. (I've have pancreatitis before) a few times and the pain is the same, but doesn't last as long.

The thing that makes me wonder is this.... so many comment on swelling of the tongue, tingle, etc. I just get the severe stomach pains etc.

Hoping its just an allergy

The full effects depends on the parts of the Clintro plant that has been used.

I have discovered that every time I eat cilantro or coriander in any form, I get a migraine, stomach bloats up, severe heartburn and start sweating. until I throw up, I don't get relief. Sometimes the reaction is after 24 hrs and when I throw up, I see cilantro or corriander in the vomit. I have no allergies of any kind but consistently get sick if I eat Cilantro. I avoid any Mexican and Indian food. At times the reaction is so severe, I feel like killing myself.

I don't get that sick from eating cilantro, but it tastes like dishsoap so I rarely eat it. Once I tried to power through it, thinking it might an acquired taste, but I got sick to my stomach. Not violently ill, but felt nauseous.

Cilantro allergy is a real thing, so I don't know why restaurants (Chipotle) cavalierly put it on everything. It's not a serious allergy, but it's far more common than gluten allergy.

This is me also but with a little bit more. I can't be in a room where it is used. I have had a metal taste in my mouth the couple of times I have had a reaction. First time I ate a Cesar Chicken Wrap and second time was Thai food that didn't say it had curry. The wrap made my lips tingle and then by the time I got home (about 15 minutes from restaurant) my lips were swelling. The Thai food I knew something wasn't right with the way it tasted so I had only eaten a couple of bites but 10 minutes away from restaurant my throat began closing, lips tingling. So I took Primatene tablet (Ephedrine12.5mg with Guaifenesin 200mg) right away and I always keep them in my purse. This is a Bronchodilator/Expectorant and it works for me. I really should also have an epi pen.

Has anyone ever had an asthmatic reaction to cilantro? In the past I've had cramps and diarrhea sobI usually avoid it. Today I had a cilantro sauce on my chicken taco and ending up coughing and wheezing for 20 minutes. It was scary and I finally used an inhaler which the doctor had given me for what he called, "slight asthma". After a while the symptoms abated...but it WAS scary. Anybody else?

I have allergies to cilantro, peanuts, false sugars, and sulfates/sulfites...full migraine ( nausea, vomiting, major headache light and sound oversensitivity)...10-15 hours of hell! Allergies get worse with each exposure...also, I am more sensitive when my immune system is overloaded. Also, poison oak is like plutonium to me...burn baby, burn/rash for 2 weeks minimum.

I have an allergy to it. Also to avocado. So basically mexican food hates me. The cilantro would start with a burning, like i ate A LOT of something spicy, but it was not spicy at all. Then about an hour-two hours later would notice hives on inner elbows then torso. Avocado hits me with a redhot face/ears/arms. And I feel like I am sunburnt. Both usually subside with benedryl, cool shower and loose clothing.

Within 10 minutes of eating cilantro I get intense stomach pains and diarrhea. For me I would call it a severe intolerance rather than an allergy, because it is not life threatening, but it occurs even from a small amount (as opposed to a lactose intolerance which is more dependent on the amount). I have to avoid guacamole, pico de gallo, and vietnamese food in particular. Most indian restaurants add it as only a garnish, so I can often ask to have it not added. It can be difficult in particular if there is a language barrier involved in ordering, and also because I think people assume I am lying about it being an allergy (they assume it's just a dislike). It's sad because I don't actually mind the taste, and I wish I could be more adventurous about food.

I have the same reaction, it's definitely cilantro intolerance (they put it in guacamole.)

I have a cilantro allergy. About san hour after eating it, my stomach starts to turn. Roughly about six hours after that I experience diarrhea and vomitting. I do everything I can to stay away from it, but learned that some salsas contain cilantro, Asian foods and sometimes fancy restaurants use it as a garnish. More people are allergic to it than you think
