I had this problem about 7 years ago and my doctor put me on Effexor (an anti anxiety drug) and it went away. Recently it came back and I'm not taking that drug anymore but I do take welbutrin which is an anti-anxiety/anti-depressant. So I don't know if I just need to switch back or what. But it is very uncomfortable and it does seem to be harder to take breaths if you are thinking about it. In my case, it starts to make my stomach and chest hurt after a while. I am going to have a oxygen saturation test done before I do anything else.

My daughter at 12 has had this problem since at least 4 years of age. It is very distressing as she hardly knows how to explain what she is feeling. She starts by explaining almost defeatedly, "I can't get the breath I want, I can't get it, I can't find it...I can't find the breath that makes me feel OK again" then she begins to cry and move about all confused. I found that she might be having anxiety/panic attacks and it is all part of a recurrent depression brought on by some of the subtlest things. She is afraid of being alone and can't stand being away from her friends for long. One thing that helps is making her participate in a variety of sports: dancing, tennis and swimming and also slowing introducing her to the discipline of running everyday. The running alone does wonders for anyone with breathing issues and it guarantees keeping any kind of anxiety away. I am surprised tto know that so many persons are afflicted with this condition but it is comforting at last to discover that we are not alone in fighting this troubling almost undiagnosable illness and that so many persons can share their stories.othis is a common problem...but it is comforting to know that so many opersons aagain" then she bein

Hi all.. Very interesting looking at all the comments, I have had panic attacks in the past resulting in many visits to A and E and in spite of a heart problem all tests come back negative. Now at 66 years old my breathing has become difficult started about 5 months ago and gradually getting worse,at night in bed was a nightmare as I couldnt control the breathing I would panic as I couldnt get that extra bit of breath or yawn which gives that satisfying feeling of breathing. I am taking mirtazipane at night which does knock me out ok and now I have found if I focus on anything but the breathing I really feel at ease, what has been happening is that once the urge to breath deeply or yawn happens can lead to almost hyperventalate, so the trick is to DONT THINK ABOUT BREATHING just keep calm and try to take deep breaths hold for a second or 2 then repeat, do not think about the next breath or your brain will react and tell you otherwise its a vicious circle and this is a symptom which can feed on itself if you allow it to, believe me its horrid I know and VERY VERY scary but you can overcome it, please email me if you wish, Im not out of the woods just yet but I am getting there and will give you any support you may need.

Go to a naturopathic doctor. Maybe it's a mold infection or some other type of infection like Lyme disease. You can get help and get better!

Dear KBB and ALL,

So many people are having the same exact problem like myself but how come doctors have nothing to say about this, not even an advise??  I even have doctor saying to me "ï also do know what is it".

So guys, whatever is it, hang in there, it may be take awhile, years but don't give up, someday, somehow, it will go away. I had this on 7 years ago and now it is back. It is good that it came back at least i can narrow down something in common then and now. It has something to do with obesity, well at least is is for me. I al;so feels that my throat tightness and narrower too. How abou tyou guys?

Ok guys, everything happen for a reason, there'll be an answer and cure someday. I'll be back soon.

I take Paxil and I still get this 'needing to take deep breaths' thing. Basically to get through that, and the need to yawn, is to keep busy, and use positive reinforcement. Just ride it out. It can feel awful but remember - anxiety is just your adrenalin. Anxiety is inadvertently, your bodies way of protecting itself. I have been on Paxil10 years and it has it's ups and downs (pardon the pun).

It really helps if you don't think about breathing

IF you're shortness of breath feels like it stems from the lower /upper abdomen, consider having your pancreas or liver checked?
