My 64 yr old husband had a shot in his lower back on Thursday and has since experienced some incontinece. Can this be cause because of the area of the injection? Supposedly, it was injected into the muscle. Thanks
Hi there, what shot is it? It is possible that the shot and the incontinence are related but it's not really something I can predict without knowing what he got as a shot. Can you let me know?

Hi,

Cortisone is a steroid used to reduce inflammation. It occurs naturally in the body but there are some synthetic versions that are injected into a specific location. These are more potent than the naturally occurring type. It sounds like this is what your husband received.

Saying that, it should not cause incontinence by itself. Since it occurs naturally in the body there are few side effects. The injection site can be sore for a few days, this is normal. It is possible that this pain is causing some "stress incontinence" in your husband. If so it should stop soon. It is also possible that during the injection a nerve that controls the bladder was damaged. In this case it may or may not recover. I would check with the physician that administered the injection if this continues.

Hope that helps some.

Please let us know what happens.

Had the cortisone injection in my left hip about 3:30 yesterday afternoon. Noticed no problems until bed time. Stood up from my desk, and urine just rolled out...no warning. Cleaned the mess up, and went to bed. Woke up to go to the bathroom in the night, (Normal for me), and again urine just began to roll out of me as I sat up in bed. HELP!!!

I had a cortisone injection in my right hip on Friday and have experienced incontinence since then.   I don,t have to be doing anything much, but I cannot get to the loo in time.   Even rising from a chair causes leakage.
