Like everyone i am also a fellow sufferer of what has been identified by reading past posts as Cholinergic Urticaria- which has no cure. So far the suggested 'solutions' are:

-Force sweating by wearing lots of layers or exercising before you go out. Once you sweat it seems to go away for a while
-Magnesium supplements
-Coconut oil
-Lots of moisturiser
-And various antihistamines

I like the sound of coconut oil and i'm waiting for 'itchyscratcy' to reply and let us know how it went. I would like to see the doctor but i hate going out in winter and seeing them in summer would be useless so i'm screwed. I'm glad i'm not the only one which is huge a comfort. Iwas beginning to think it was all in my head or i was cursed or something.

guys, i think i can help

I have had it for 20 years, no rashes just the pain. After reading this i had a cool shower, exfoliated and then put on Bio oil which my Mrs has left over from her birth. The Bio oil soaks real quick into the skin. Afterwards i felt cool and had no problems for that evening and the next day. so i did the same but used baby oil instead as its a lot cheaper and thought it would do the same job. This seemed to cover me in a layer and i got the prickly sensation as soon as i went downstairs. This was a nightmare as its hard to wash off. Bit it seems that moisturising the skin helps but you need to use the right stuff. Something that soaks in rahter than blocking the pores.

I have also started magnesium but its only my 2nd day. I have had blood test and scans but they showed nothing although i have been diagnosed with Gilbert syndrome.

So I tried coconut oil, complete flop, didn't work at all.
I tried Piriton Allergy Relief tablets, fail.
I tried Cold Showers, fail.
Working up a sweat is impossible, and only proceeds in making me itchy again.
I found wetting my skin with cold water to work nicely, and i reckon this bio oil stuff might be the solution.

Peace.

i think this bio oil worked as it soaked straight in unlike normal oil.

I feel myself getting hot but the prickling doesnt come. I havent tried going it further to see what happens as i approach a sweat as im not sadistic. But it does seem to take the edge off it and give me longer till the prickles come on.

Im going to scrub and oil every 2 days and see what happens. Its not that cold here at the moment, about 10 degrees, i was hoping it would e warm enough for it to go away.

i havent had it for a few years, but this is the worst its been, doesnt help that i currently have a cold a it makes my head hot.

Okay guys this might help

yes i have exactly the same problem it started 2 years ago ....... as far as i have come this seems to be something with dry skin or maybe cholinergic utricaria but that condition is too extreme i guess .... it is very annoying i know .....

the coconut oil or mustard oil both works really because it makes your skin oily and moistourized .... it will work for you only when you do it regularly everyday and results will take some time to show up .....

keep exercising regularly because last year it was less it was not so intense as this year because i was very much active last year playing basketball ....

i don't know i am also looking for some definite answers...... i will talk to some doctor about it and till then i will just do this oil massage and exercise thing........... ...

another update

the weather has turned colder with clear bright sun and its bad again. So scrubbing and moisturising doesnt work. I keep forgetting to take the magnesium so cant tell about that.

It seems that nothing helps, apart from the weather getting warmer

20, Male here. Have been suffering from these itches since about 8-9 years. Did not know what it is called until yesterday when my doc told me about it. I used to call it Crucio (from HP series) but it's called hives (common name) or cholinergic utricaria (scientific name).

I did not see any doc regarding this disorder until this winter. The first doc said it's winter itch and would go upon liberal application of moisturizer/oil. I had been applying moisturizer since two winters, so i knew that the doc had no clue. I went to a dermatologist yesterday. He said it's cholinergic utricaria. He said he himself suffered from it for many years. He said that in simple terms the attack happens due a chemical reaction in the body. The chemical exhausts itself after about 5 mins and then the itch stops. The chemical takes time to get produced again, so the attack does not happen till a couple of hours have passed. But this would happen only if you let the attack subside by itself (which is a cruel torture i know). The doc said that there is a cure to this disorder but it takes a couple of years. So it is better that you avoid situations where you know you are likely to get an attack. I know it's not possible all the time, but you CAN reduce the number of attacks by doing some simple things.

According to this doc, the body overtime adapts itself and the attacks go away. The adaptation period differs from person to person. For some, it may be a couple of months, for some, it may be a couple of decades. It seems to be a slightly rare disorder since many docs are clueless about it, and most of us seem to have never met another person with the same condition. My doc is an old man now and he says it's been many years now and he hasn't suffered any attacks. He has prescribed some medicines which i guess are antihistamines, i hope they help.

So for now, all we can do is:
1) Wait for our bodies to adapt to the condition.
2) Anticipating and preventing attacks. (I have stopped wearing any warm thing that does not have a zip in the front for eg, jackets and sweatshirts with zips can be easily removed when there is an attack without spoiling your hair!)
3) Try our own personal remedies (i m going to try coconut oil next winters, will also try to join a gym and keep gymming through the winters)

@WinterHell... It does go away in the summer right? Temperatures here were 13C last week, and i was still dying... sh**ting bricks incase i have it like permenantly...

Also saw an amazing docter last week... She diagnosed it as Urticasia and started me on tablets (TelFast 180mg)... she said they take about 12 days to kick in, but im not as bad the last few days, not even when working in the Restaurant, so that had me stoked...

Still I dont want to be on them all Summer!

Peace Out.

Oh my goodness it is such a relief to know I'm not the only one going through this!! This is the worst thing and no one I know has any idea what I'm talking about or why I complain about it. It used to be just my feet that would feel the itching the worst and I'd have to run to the bath and turn the water on scalding hot to get rid of the itching. But it gets BAD... so bad sometimes I can't do anything but sit there and try not to cry. Especially if I'm in public and the itching starts, I feel so helpless to stop it. If I get even a little bit worked up my whole body, my arms, legs, thighs...everywhere just itches like crazy. If I walk up stairs, after sex, if I get really nervous about something....Getting out of a hot shower is the worst, it feels like someone is just stabbing me with tiny needles and I even use my hairbrush to scratch at my skin like crazy!!! I hate this and I'm calling the doctor tomorrow, I can't take much more of it. Thank you guys for making me feel better about this. Like I said, I'm glad I'm not alone.

OK ! I THINK THIS CAN HELP EVERYONE HERE. I've no longer suffer from winter itches for about a month and I had suffered this for 8 years. Let me tell you what I did.

1st DAY
First, I wore very thick clothing like heavy jackets and pants and I had to cover my head and neck
Second, I ran on the treadmill ( I know you think I'm so crazy because this makes you more itchy, doesn't it ?). Of course the first few minutes when my body received heat, the itching would itch terribly, but I tried to ignore it and kept running ... I was surprise about 5 minutes later, the itching gradually decreased and eventually it was gone. I still ran until my body sweat for a little while longer. After that, I felt much better, and then I tried to eat spicy foods and stay near heat source , I did not feel itching as before( I love to eat spicy foods, but I can't eat in the winter time due to itching). After I took a shower, I applied coconut oil on my body. That night I slept so well with no itching attack. Next day, I stayed in hot places, eat hot foods, and took hot showers....I had no longer any itching anymore.

2 nd DAY
I did the same as the 1st day. But itching happen about the first 2 minutes later it was gone (slight iching unlike the 1st day which was horrible ) I felt much much better.

3rd DAY
I did the same, on the 3rd day I had no itching at all. I was very happy, I kept doing this every day until now. It's seemed like this disease was totally gone.

Before that, I went to several Doctors but no one can help me. I suffered this disease for 8 years, it was horrible. Thank God ! Now this disease seems like its gone.

Please try to do what I do, it may help you. Dont give up at day 1 please, I know at the beginning it was terrible, but the first 5-10 minutes then you will be OK!

SUMMARY
1. Wear thick clothing like heavy jackets that makes you easily sweat
2. Run on the treadmill as much as you can ( I run about 30 min )
3. After taking a shower, apply coconut oil on entire your body.

Please do it and let me know if it helps. Thanks!

OK try and keep this short.
I'm 27 have had this since i was 16, yeah i can remember my first attack (not sure what else to call it lol that's what it feels like) and like most of you it was in the dead of winter.

I've seen doctors upon doctors (not pancake stacked :-P) and they've said it's this, that or the other - it's in my head, it's allergies, it's related to caffeine, it's soap, not enough water, dry skin, hypersensitive skin, heat induced urticaria etc etc etc.

Basically now I don't care what it is, at first - of course i cared, i cared deeply but honestly after 10 years i really don't care any longer - it's become a part of life - a very painful, annoying and utterly resentful part, but a part none the less.

Like most of you I also find it difficult to start sweating, really difficult and for the most part i simply don't, which while having the benefit of very little BO, isn't worth the price of the day to day pain. I live in the north-eastern UK so it's pretty cold up here lol most of the year and we don't enjoy a whole lot of HOT summer weather, due to this the relief a lot have over the time of year relating to the pain being mostly only in winter doesn't really apply.

Anyway, As i said, now i don't care what it's called but i would really like to find a way to treat the symptoms.
So, up to today I have previously tried the following!

-A caffeine free (or as close to it) diet.
-Greater water intake
-Antihistamines of all shapes sizes and colours (I saw an immunologist about it in 2005-2007 trust me i must have tried all types and combinations under the sun!)
-Different soap powders for clothing (again pretty much depleted all choices in variation)
-Personal soaps, including sensitive skin, dry skin, scented, none scented etc etc.
-Body lotions & moisturisers (A suggestion a while ago from a friend of a friend was cocoa butter)
-Full body deep pore cleansing (Awkward situation....seriously)
-Body hair removal/Waxing (One of the consultants thought the itching may be due to hair oil reacting to the skin)

And of course none of them worked, so every few years or so i look around online again to see how things have progressed and if anyone has finally found something that works, and usually someone has but of course it doesn't work for me lol So here i am again.

And:
Flax seed oil,
hemp seed oil,
magnesium supplements,
& coconut oil
Are new ones to try lol

Thanks for new ideas guys, I'll report back if anything helps.

I have just started getting this at age 28, the same time as my thyroid is playing up (hyperthyroidism), there is a link between thyroid hormones and dry irratable skin. I know this is causing my painfully itchy needle sensation skin problem because they came together. Get a blood test from your doctor and check the thyroid hormones, something to think about if your lost for answers.
