I am 30 years old and a little over a year ago I went to an urgent care clinic with severe right lower abdominal pain. They did a abdominal CT and found an 11cm cyst on my spleen. I then went to a general surgeon who capped the spleen cyst ( He cut off the top of the cyst and burnt the edges in hopes it will not develop again). They believe that I developed this as a result of trauma from a car accident I had when I was 16 years old and it had been growing ever since. He told me if the cyst did come back they would want to consider removing my spleen. The doctor told me that it would take a long time to heal and my immune system would be comprimised because of the spleens role in this system. He said I would get sicker a lot easier if it was removed. The reason I had the cyst taken off in the first placeis because the doctor told me that if we left it there and it ruptured on its own that I could hemmorage to death.

I had the same problem. When I was 15, I experienced horrible nausea. They were going to remove my gall bladder. Just to check, they gave me a CT scan and found the cyst on my spleen. It was about 15 cm in diameter. It was so large that it was pushing my stomach into itself and causing the horrible pain. My doctor felt it was best to remove it. I spent three days in the hospital and three weeks at home recovering from the pain. It was hard for me, even though the procedure was done laproscopically, it still required that they cut through the abdominal muscles, making it very difficult for me to walk.
I haven't had anymore pain since.
I also haven't had an infection since, which is remarkable considering I live in a dormitory with a bunch of teenagers.

Spleen cysts can be hydatid. That means they are tapeworm lavae. That's why they keep returning, they don't get all the tapeworm, and they re-infest. A good sonographer should be able to tell you if it is a hydatid cyst. A cyst that grows is usually one, but a hydatid can be static also. They usually don't aspirate or drain a hydatid due to risk of spreading the infection to other organs. The spleen is hard to do surgery on, hence why they often just remove the spleen, but you are better off with a spleen than without one, by far. Due to the amount of blood that passes through the spleen, rupture is a very serious risk as you can bleed out. Ask your doc to use chemicals to deal with the infection at the same time as surgery, decreasing the chances of re-infestation. If your doctor doesn't know how or thinks you are mad for asking, get a new doctor.

It makes me feel better to hear that you have not had a problem with infections since then. I just found out last weekend that I have another cyst and this time it is inside my spleen. I am supposed to go to the surgeon this afternoon and I am sure that he is going to want to remove it and that was one of my biggest concerens with the spleen removal.

I am a 30 year old female and just over two years ago, after months of discomfort and sickness, I was diagnosed with a splenic cyst (25cm x 12cm by12cm). I had a procedure called marsupialisation, where they drain the cyst (just under 4L of fluid was removed), cut a window out of the lining and sew it back on itself. This is supposed to stop the cyst growing back but I have recently found out that it is back (although only 12 x 12 x 11.5cm this time my two recent ultrasounds show it is still growing) and I need to repeat the same surgery again. I am not even considering get my spleen completely removed as doctor advised me that even if it was fully removed they can't guarantee that a cyst would not grow at the position the spleen was removed from and I would have to be on antibiotics for the rest of my life , which then causes a whole heap of other issues. I am praying that surgery is successful this time and it stops it from growing back and my spleen can stay where it is, fingers crossed!! Good luck to anyone else who is due to have surgery.

i had my spleen, spleenic cyst and the tail end of my pancreas removed due to the spleenic cyst, my spleen had enlarge to the size of a football and was squashed in through my left rib and stickin out under my left armpit. because the surgeon was afraid the spleen would bust i had to be opened right across my tummy (29 staples in total) im not a big woman im about 7-8 stone so u can imagine the scare is right scross my tummy. i have been having loads of problems since i had my spleen removed im constantly sick even tho im on tablets to rebuild my immune system. recently ive had another ct scan and have an appointment with my surgeon now on the 6th april. i had my op in 2009 (June) and was wondering if anyone else has had the same problems as me with regards the sickness?

when I was 16 I has mono really bad. Since it was so bad the doctor put me on codine and steroids. The funny thing when I went to the hospital because I couldn't breathe, the doctor was telling me I don't have mono while he stood in the doorway and looked at my throat. I had a blood test done only to tell me that I was right and I have mono. Because of the codine and steroids I developed a cyst in my spleen. The doctor said it was too small to do anything about it. It is now four years later and I have intense pains near my rib cage on both sides o my abdomen... I hve had ultrasounds and ct scans but my doctor can't figure out why both sides hurt. He even checked if I have cysts on my ovaries, which I don't. I just want to know what causing the pain on both sides.

I have exactly the same cyst in my spleen growing since I was 22 (now have been 5 years), hemoglobin is too low sometimes and low blood pressure. Doctor suggests to wait to see what will happen with the cyst it is still growing a few mm every year.

Hi everyone,4 months ago I went to the doctor's complaining of nausea and left abdominal pain. I got sent for blood tests and they came back with a high liver enzyme. Because of this, my doctor referred me for an ultrasound (mostly just to check for liver stones). During the ultrasound they found an 11cm by 11cm sized cyst in my spleen. After many doctors appointments, ultrasounds and a cat scan, I'm finally scheduled for surgery on Nov.22. My surgeon has to remove my whole spleen because the cyst is so large (has displaced my stomach and diaphragm)Last week I became very ill and was throwing up daily (usually just bad nausea with no vomiting). My urine was very dark and my eyes had gone yellow. Obviously concerned I went for blood tests to check my liver. The blood test came back very abnormal. I'm scheduled for another blood test tomorrow and then an appointment with an internal medicine doctor the next day... Does any one else have experience with liver issues with a splenic cyst?!?I'm worried something else is wrong with me.

My 15 year old daughter has a cyst in her spleen. They drained it twice, 2nd time they put alcohol in to to fuse the walls together to keep the cyst from filling up again. She had a CT scan yesterday and found out the cyst did fill up again. It was a little smaller this time (so far). It was 10 cm last time & they drained 450cc's out of it! This time it's 8 cm. I'm worried that her spleen will bust again like it did the first time. She was in excruciating pain & couldn't breathe. Her Pediatricition doesn't know what to do. What type of doctor (specialist) deals with the spleen? I don't know about removing it but I don't want it to continue to fill up with fluid.

i never heard of partial cyst removal of the spleen or partial spleen removal. i only heard of complete removals.

Partial spleen removals are usually preferred as the spleen has been known to regenerate itself. Lots of the time it isnt possible though, depending on where the growth is situated.
