I had an HSG on the 3rd of this month. My period was meant to come on the 20th but it's yet to. I'm now 7 days late. I've taken a home preg test and it was negative. I have mood swings, back aches, stomach pains, and all the regular symptoms I get before and during my period but still not getting it. My gyn said nothing is wrong and isn't exactly helpful. I'm worried and confused. I should add that my period is usually never late.
Hello, guest.
I can understand your concern and confusion. It can be frustrating when your menstrual cycle deviates from its usual pattern, especially when you've had a negative pregnancy test. Here are some potential reasons for a delayed period, even with a negative pregnancy test:
-
Hormonal imbalances: Fluctuations in hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, can lead to irregularities in your menstrual cycle. Stress, changes in weight, exercise routines, or other factors can contribute to hormonal imbalances.
-
Recent procedures or tests: An HSG (hysterosalpingogram) is a medical procedure that involves injecting contrast dye into the uterus and fallopian tubes to check for blockages. This procedure can sometimes cause temporary disruptions in your menstrual cycle.
-
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): PCOS is a hormonal disorder that can cause irregular periods, among other symptoms. However, this usually requires a proper diagnosis from a healthcare provider.
-
Thyroid issues: An underactive or overactive thyroid gland can also affect your menstrual cycle.
-
Medication or contraceptive use: Certain medications or birth control methods may affect your menstrual cycle.
-
Perimenopause: As you age, your menstrual cycle may become less predictable as you enter the perimenopausal stage.
Try to manage your stress levels, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and keep track of any changes in your symptoms or menstrual cycle to provide more information to your doctor, if needed.
