I had an HSG on the 3rd of this month. My period was meant to come on the 20th but it's yet to. I'm now 7 days late. I've taken a home preg test and it was negative. I have mood swings, back aches, stomach pains, and all the regular symptoms I get before and during my period but still not getting it. My gyn said nothing is wrong and isn't exactly helpful. I'm worried and confused. I should add that my period is usually never late.

Hello, guest.

I can understand your concern and confusion. It can be frustrating when your menstrual cycle deviates from its usual pattern, especially when you've had a negative pregnancy test. Here are some potential reasons for a delayed period, even with a negative pregnancy test:

  1. Hormonal imbalances: Fluctuations in hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, can lead to irregularities in your menstrual cycle. Stress, changes in weight, exercise routines, or other factors can contribute to hormonal imbalances.

  2. Recent procedures or tests: An HSG (hysterosalpingogram) is a medical procedure that involves injecting contrast dye into the uterus and fallopian tubes to check for blockages. This procedure can sometimes cause temporary disruptions in your menstrual cycle.

  3. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): PCOS is a hormonal disorder that can cause irregular periods, among other symptoms. However, this usually requires a proper diagnosis from a healthcare provider.

  4. Thyroid issues: An underactive or overactive thyroid gland can also affect your menstrual cycle.

  5. Medication or contraceptive use: Certain medications or birth control methods may affect your menstrual cycle.

  6. Perimenopause: As you age, your menstrual cycle may become less predictable as you enter the perimenopausal stage.

Try to manage your stress levels, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and keep track of any changes in your symptoms or menstrual cycle to provide more information to your doctor, if needed.
