Hi, my name is Christian. I am seventeen years old and I have always wondered if marijuana can alter anything that has to do with being diabetic. The reason I wonder this is because I am diabetic, and I have been since I was about twelve or so. I do smoke marijuana and I have been for quiet awhile. Yes, it is illegal, which I do think is stupid. I know alot of people would disagree and say I am dumb just because I like it and am a kid and will grow out of this stage. Well you are wrong, you cannot say anything unless you totally disagree with cigarettes and alcohol and any other type of thing that the government has legalized that can possibly kill you. Marijuana cannot kill you, it does not make you "trip" or do things you would not normally do. I smoke on a daily basis and it does not effect my diabetes or my life in any way. All it makes you do is relax, and it actually helps people. The only way it would effect someone who is diabetic is if they get the "munchies" and eats up the whole kitchen, which I do alot. But you can always fix this by taking more insulin to elevate your bloodsugar. So if your a parent or a friend of someone who has diabetes and is smoking, the only real problem is that it is illegal. And my advice to that is that you should care, but let him/her learn from their own mistakes, trust me, it is better to do it this way. And it is not called diabetes type one by the way, its called Type 1 Juvenile Diabetes.

I think marijuana smoke to contain carcinogens and they to are harmful for lungs, brain, heart etc.
You should be talking to her about her habit and the effects of marijuana smoking it is surely not the solution for diabetes. :-(

I am 36 years old and have two young children. I have had diabetes since i was 12. I left home at a young age(16) and ran wild drinking and smoking pot. I am STILL smoking pot 20 years later, extremely heavy. I am an addict and can't stop. I also suffer depression and smoking pot can help with this but can also not help as I have become very isolated from friends and family. I don't check my sugars and my HBa1c is usually very high. I don't want to be like this, and i do believe that if i could stop smoking pot that i would be able to control my life and diabetes alot better. I eat about 1 meal a day and i do not get the munchies anymore due to my high intake of marijuana. My body also has alot of trouble healing its self when i have a wound of some sort. I can get very moody when i run out of pot and become very anxious. my lungs are constantly weezing and i have a severe broncular problems. If i could turn back time i would never have started. I worry about my kids following my lead. Smoking marijuana is ok IF you have control, unlike myself.

excuse me but short term memory loss is an alteration of ones state of mind and becoming addicted to it, well isnt that just making it a habit and the person there refering to has type one diabetes that requires alot more attention than type to and with the short term memory loss effect this could lead to the loss of a limb.

HI
Im 26 and was diagnosed with type 1 at age 9. I started smoking hash (taste is better than weed and has a smoother effect) a few months ago. about once a day. I stopped smoking a few days ago because I'm traveling and have noticed my blood sugar levels have gone up and even the insulin shots are taking much longer to bring my sugar levels down.
I can't figure out if this is because I'm on the move, though i'm not eating as much as I would at home because I'm busy, or if it is because I stopped smoking.

Someone mentioned on this post that pot helps reduce insulin resistance. Which is making sense to me now.

I would like to add though that alcohol is worse for any human (diabetic or not) and Hashish, in many countries like India and north africa and many other parts of the world that still believe in herbal/ ayurvedic medicine, is still used as a form of medication. (opium too!)

The pharmaceutical lobby in the states is so strong that they are not even doing further research on stem cells. I recently read in a newspaper in EU that a man who was in a car accident and paralyzed waist down underwent stem cell treatment (which they extracted from his own body so no fetuses involved) and is now able to walk again.
But this treatment was done in India. Not the US.
Its very sad how governments treat their citizens, they just want to steal money from everywhere, not caring whether their people are living healthy lives.

Good luck all you diabetics and I really hope and pray we get some kind of cure soon!
cheers
:-)

Hi everyone,

I have been a Type I diabetic for 23 years (diagnosed at the age of 10 years old). I noticed that a great number of people on this website support marijuana use for diabetic control, but I can tell you from personal experience that it is NOT GOOD FOR YOU. I have excellent control of my diabetes, but I went through a year or two where I smoked pot at the age of 19-21 yrs and my control went down hill. Luckily I got sick of feeling awful and got back into exercise and gave up the pot.

A lot of people who smoke pot like to legitimize its' use by saying "it's good for you". I have grown up now and am 33 years old with no complications from diabetes at all. My last A1c was 6.0 and I don't think this would have been the case had I continued smoking pot. When I was smoking my A1c was around 8 for that brief 2 year period. I am currently a health care professional and I know from both my education and personal experience that marijuana is not good for diabetes. It is good for cancer pain and to stimulate appetite in those that are struggling with cancer, but those medicinal uses are for people struggling with chronic, unrelenting pain and possible death.

Go to the library and actually research the effects of marijuana on the body. It will destroy your lungs which will destroy your circulation. Your circulation is the key to many diabetic complications so no diabetic needs help in this department. If you want to make yourself feel better I would suggest not smoking pot and exercise instead.

It's hard being a diabetic and being different and not as care free as most people. If you notice many of the people who reportedly had benefits from marijuana also report diabetic complications such as kidney problems, glaucoma, neuropathy etc. This would suggest that those smoking pot for years are not taking care of their disease as well as they say. I have absolutely zero complications and I think it is because of how much hard work I put into staying healthy through exercise, diet and living a drug free life. Everyone goes through a period of rebellion where they want to forget their disease....I know I did during the time I smoked pot, but eventually you have to recognize that the only way to live a healthy, happy life is to live in recognition of having diabetes with its effects and pot has no place in that.

Hello I'm 21. I have been a type 1 diabetic since I was 12 and a habitual smoker since I was 18. I surprisingly have noticed no change in my levels and in fact a lower A1C. I wish i wasn't so dependent on weed to feel better, and I'm really not sure how interrelated that is with my managing of diabetic, but I honestly don't think weed affects it. I've been focused and successful for before and after I started smoking. But lastly, sadly, munchies is dangerous with type 1 diabetes because its so easy to under-bolus.

I have type 1 diabetis and I also have neuropathy which is painful. the medicines that the docotors prescribed for my pain cause kidney and liver damage and or serious withdrawl symtoms. I smoke pot when my sugar is too high and I feel sick like I am going to throw up. I also smoke when my neuropathy is getting to be unbearable. Weed is not the cure all that some people believe nor is it the evil scourge of humanity others think. It has its benifits and if used responsibly it can do wonders for those in pain. Plus it is fun to do... As being diabetic, alcohol is extreemly bad for me but I can smoke a joint and enjoy a good night with friends while they drink with no adverse effects to my bloodsugar.

No reason to get personal here. Nonah stated her opinion...as much as I disagree with it I am not going to trounce him/her for it.

I've been diabetic, type I since I was 12 years old...im now 30 years of age and in very good health....no kidney problems, eye problems, etc.....and im and damn attractive lad if I might say so myself..

I have smoked weed since eighth grade but Ive always had trouble with hypoglycemia due to my very low fat body stature. Always carry your meter and be careful not to leave it anywhere....keep it on you and always check it vigilantly when smoking with friends outside of your home (a safe local with food close by)

Always have glucose, a snickers, a coke....something on you for when you need it.....always.

Over the long run, weed does impact blood flow to the extremities of the body - like your feet and toes and other phalanges - can raise the risk of amputation.....in the long run...furthermore the impact on arteries and cardio-pulmonary system cannot be understated....most diabetics die from heart failure and we are also 4x more likely to have a freaking stroke......if you smoke like a mad man, as I certainly have at times in my life, your chances of being in those boats are very real...

Sorry but Im a realist.....but I do luv the chiba!!!

Well I've had diabetes fir 14 years, I'm 25 now. I've never smoked before but was thinking of giving it a try. Never really saw a reason to try it, I have no problems with my sugars, I do have pain in my left shoulder do to a boxing incident that left my should in pretty bad shape for the rest of my life. The pain sometimes is unbearable, my doc put me on vicodine. I still have a whole bottle because its alters my personality to cool, calm collective to a veg state. I don't like that at all. The time I took the pills my sugar dropped to 33, I didn't pass out, I kept myself from doing that. LOL I actually learned how to bring my sugar up by using y emotions based on the situation. But thats a another story for later times. But I've been wondering about it. Should I smoke to help out with the pain?

Hi, I'm 14 years old, and i recently got diagnosed with type one diabetes two months ago. Almost all the people i know, and most of my friends smoke, or have tried marijuana. I just want to try it once, because you only have one life...and i dont plan on doing it ever again. My blood sugars have been excellent, almost every single one has been under 151 (which is the in range of well off, regulated blood sugar). I keep track of my blood sugar, and i care about it. When i get the chance, and my friends do it with me, what should i do? should i eat something before without injecting insulin so i dont get so low that i faint?- because i heard it gives you the munchies, and you get low on blood sugar. Im also scared that my annual doctor check ups will check me for(and because i have diabetes.. :)the THC or whatever will still be stored in some of my cells, or fat or minerals or whatever it might be. Im also afraid i might start stabbing myself with my thumb pricker because i will be high..Any tips? i want to be very cautious, so NOTHING goes wrong. please, i need as many thoughts on this as possible!! thanks.

Hey, im in a similar situation, im also 14 but i have had diabetes for 3 years now. I have smoked occasionally and am wondering if it will show up in my a1c check. Dont worry about doing stupid sh*t while high, you wont. Unless you have a really low tolerance which is unlikely, you might not even feel anything your first time. Just relax, be in an environment where you are comfortable, and make sure your blood check is more than 1 week away.
