Hello all... I am a diabetic type 1 person and I like to workout at the gym. I am wondering if it makes a difference if I eat out before or after I go to the gym? Which is better for my diabetes? Does anyone out there workout and know which benefits me the most? Thanks and happy holidays!

Hello, Guest! What type of work out do you regularly like to do? What do your meals consist of? There are many factors that play into your situation. It would probably depend on how hard you work out. If the intensity isn't hard, you could eat a carb unit and be o.k. when you worked out. If you have a high intensity work out, you will use more carbohydrates so you will want to take in about 2 carb units before your work out. You may need another carb unit during your exercise if you workout for longer than 45 minutes. Eating after exercising is possible if you work out for longer than an hour. You may want to check your blood sugar so you can gauge what each workout does to it. If you find your exercise is depleting your blood sugar below 80, you may want to eat a carb unit, like an apple before the exercise. You will have to play around with it to see what works for you the best.
Are there any other diabetics that work out and have difficulties with their blood sugar regulation? Are there any stories or perhaps advice you would like to share?

First of all, Merry Christmas! (or 'happy hollidays' if I'm being "politically correct") Working out is a good thing to do. I don't think the order in which you excersize and eat really matters. As ybanks brought up, however, a lot depends on what you eat and how you excersize. Good luck, and watch out for the holliday foods!
