Apparently I'm going to get on a treadmill and run for a while while being video taped. Then my dr. is going to look at it and see if I do anything weird while running, like favor one side, over pronate, etc. I'm just curious if anyone has had any luck with this. Anyway, here's hoping!

I had a friend of mine make some comments after a long run one day and I made some adjustments to my stride and they seemed to make me a more economical runner and a long run is a little less painful now.

I'm afraid if I went to a professional, he'd giggle like a little school girl when he saw me run.

Cheryl,

I think JNasty had one done a while back. click here I went to a podiatrist and he didn't even watch me run. He knew just from looking at my feet how messed up I am. The best part is that he explained why I am having all this pain where I am. Good Luck!

A PT I work with works at the gait lab once a week. They video tape from several angles and do EMG as well. I would love to go through the clinic, but I think they do primarily surgical candidates - most insurance won't pay for (what they consider) minor problems.

Thanks for the link, thats interesting. I really have no idea what they can tell from this but several people have recommended this. And considering I've had recurring knee problems since I can remember but esp. since I danced as a kid, I figure they can tell me what it is or if orthotics or some such can help.
Obviously mine is a "minor problem" (major pain in the arse, but minor problem medically speaking) However, fortunately it will cost me only $20 and my finicky ins. does not have to be involved. I am doing it through the sports med. clinic I've been working with, they offer these gait analysis clinics like 2-3 times a year and I got in on it. The cool thing is, they are already working with me, so we can kind of incorporate what we discover into my treatment. There may be hope for me and my gimp leg yet!!
What is EMG?

What is EMG?

electromyelogram. Measures muscle activity through electrodes on the skin. You may feel a mild shock (more like a tingle) but it is not really painful. I'm not sure all gait labs use them though.

I've ahd gait analysis, and I do gait analysis at the running store.
It makes a big difference while buying shoes, and can also help diagnose problems biomechanically that effect knee, hip, lower back problems, etc.

Every runner should have it done.

I've also had my gait analyzed, a few times. And I agree with J1Miller, every runner should have it done. It doesn't hurt, and they can tell all kinds of things by watching how you run.
Be sure to give us the results.

Sooo....I did the gait analysis on Saturday, things for the most part look good. Nothing major, I torque (sp?) a little too much on top, (twisting my shoulders/arms too much) which is easily fixed.
But the big find was just how much I really overpronate, whoa! I have really high arches that collapse with each step. I also kick my toes out...I don't know what the word is, but opposite of pigeon toed? which sort of over emphasizes the overpronating, making the whole situation down there not great and thus, the root of my whole knee problem. We're still not completely sure why its only coming up on one knee since both feet do the same thing, but we now know where to go from here. Very interesting.

Duck foot. Do you also stand that way? Or just run and walk?
So are they recommending orthotics? Or anything else, like maybe massage therapy or physical therapy?
I'm glad you got it done, prolly takes a lot off your mind now about your knee.

LOL! Yes! Duck foot! I should change my avatar to that penguin, it more accurately depicts my waddle....
Anyway, I stand that way and walk that way when I'm not paying attention, its sort of like slouching. It doesn't hurt or feel weird to walk normally, I think I've just "waddled" since it since my ballet years, you know, lots of "first position" and the like.
We are starting with el cheapo arch supportS. If that doesn't work we'll upgrade to orthotics (my very sensible dr. can respect my wallet....why spend the big bucks if the cheap stuff might work). We are also doing massage therapy and developing a training plan to strengthen some muscles that are on the side of my shin and stretch the ones in my butt, both of which they claim are influences, interestingly enough.
I hope this all works, I really don't want to have to run in those shoes that look like space boots!!

Nah, you won't have space boots, but it might feel that way at first. But you'll get used to them and probably like how you feel much better.
I would suggest along with the massage therapy, et al., to concentrate on keeping your toes pointed forward while standing and sitting. Since you've been in 'first position' for such a long time, the muscles on the lateral side of your legs have shortened. So anything to help stretch out those muscles in the glutes, hams and lateral aspect of the thighs would help.
And kudos to your Dr. for going with the cheaper fix first!
