Hello,

I had my tonsils out 6 months ago and I am a singer. My voice has changed for sure. Its not unmanageable. You can still sing, everything is just more difficult. So your range is slightly decreased, your texture of voice will shift. Its a struggle to sound as good as I did before, but I'm still a good singer. Like there wasn't a drastic change but it certainly was notable for myself.

DON'T DO IT!!

I did it and I have NEVER regret ANYTHING so much! I loved my voice before, I had confidence, I had a sexy hoarse voice. But my tonsils was just huge but they were not infected, like the white spots you get from the disease. I DIDN'T needed the surgery but DID IT any way.

Damn, nowadays I'm reflecting on doin a reserve surgery or something like that. HECK!

Well, how did your surgery go? I'm 34, and weekly leading worship at my church. And my tonsils are in the way! Frequently getting sick & wondering if I should have these things yanked out. You can email me personally if you like. Hope you are doing better than before and I look forward to hearing the details! Thanks so much :)

I had my tonsils out in October of 2011.  My voice has definately degraded since having the surgery.  The range I once had is gone and I'm afraid it may be permanent.  It's a completely different feeling when trying to sing now.  Had I known this, I may not have opted to have the surgery.  It was one of the questions I had for my doctor, "will this affect my voice".  He told me if anything, my voice will be "crisper".  Yeah, it's crisper alright.  Sounds like I have a bag of crispy potato chips in my throat when I sing.

I got my tonsils out 2 days ago. I can talk, but it's very painful, and my voice sounds really weird. It sounds very deep and scratchy. I'm hoping it will go back to how it used to be, or at least mostly, because I was just starting to sing more in public before the surgery. Wish me luck! --Stacey

I had my tonsils taken out a few years ago and it is the best thing I ever did. I was getting strep and mono on and off for almost 3 years when I had mine taken out. It was no picnic and you do have a funny voice for a good month but let me tell you popsicles, pudding, ice cubes, and protein shakes will be your best friend. Also, if you put an ice pack on your throat it makes a world of difference! I wouldnt try anything solid for at least a two weeks only mushy things. add this with lots of rest and you will be great. As far as the signing part, my voice was much better after my tonsils were gone. hope this helps your journey to recovery!

I am a 30 y/o opera singer, and have trained extensively with some of the best in the business. I trained as a mezzo in college, and then moved to soprano. I recently had my tonsils out (shaved to little nubs, but not fully removed). Not gonna lie... the recovery was no picnic. I was in terrible pain for over 2 weeks. I had been hemming and hawing for 4 years about doing it, and what convinced me was that I was training as a soprano but could never access my high notes. Something needed to be done. Anyway, It's been a month since the surgery, and I've been singing for the past week and a half. I've always had a large voice, but my voice has grown substantially. Ironically, I got the surgery to try to open up my top - and it did - I sang a b and a c at my lesson, which I was unable to do before, and it was only the first lesson since sugery! But, what is amazing, is that my bottom opened up significantly which was unexpected. I sang down to a g below middle c (which is the bottom of a mezzo's range), and I didn't even go into chest voice. It's pretty amazing. Also, I had sleep apnea, but have been scheduled another sleep study b/c we think that the apnea may be gone. Granted, I had an extreme case - my doctor, who is one of the most respected otolaryngologists in Philadelphia, told me that I had the worst case of enlarged tonsils that he'd ever seen. But, anyway, I want to end this by saying that everyone is different and will have a different experience. If you need this surgery, there is no point in worrying about what may or may not be. Just tell yourself that you'll deal with anything that comes and hope for the best!

Hi! I had tonsillectomy a few years ago. I am a singer and my range is pretty high but months after recovering from the surgery I can't sing high notes anymore. When I try to do it I become pitchy and now years after its still the same. I feel like I missed something. :((

If you were able to sing good and after the surgery you couldnt sing good at all, than would that mean that someone who sucks at singing(like me) would get a better singing voice? Because my friend wants me to audition for the X Factor with her and I need to get that surgery, but she is a wonderful singer and i totaly suck. :(

Hi! I'm on day 6 of tonsillectomy! My voice right now sounds like a fish out of water! If I sing it sounds pretty bad but my doc said that your voice should come back shortly after the scabs fall of! Right after you are fully recovered you can go back to choir!!!!

I am 56 now and had my tonsils out at the age of 15. Before having them out I was worried that my voice would change? I had a good voice and sang in a chior and at school etc. I was told by the Dr my voice would be ok. After having the op my voice did change, and did not return (GUTTED)

My son is 5 years old and he just had his tonsils and adneoids out 4 days ago. He just started talking today after being pretty quiet for 3 days. Before his surgery he had a deep voice for a 5 year old. Now his voice sounds like he has sucked all of the helium out of 100 ballons. I hope it goes back to normal soon.
