Hello! I have a four years old daughter. I noticed her eyes became red and inflamed two days ago. I tried with chamomile ointment but the inflammation persists. Now I see some yellow discharge from her eyes. My sister says it is conjunctivitis. Does conjunctivitis cause pus? Should I take her to her doctor? She has no other symptoms.

Hello! Your daughter probably has a bacterial conjunctivitis since her eyes are both affected, red and with yellow discharge (pus). This is common in bacterial conjunctivitis. Don’t worry. In viral conjunctivitis there is no pus, jus red, inflamed eyes with waterish discharge. Her doctor will probably prescribe some eye drops with antibiotic and she will recover soon.

There is no need to give antibiotic eyedrops for viral conjunctivitis....it is a virus. Most conjunctivitis is viral, not bacterial and will clear up on its own.
