for starters I must say for the hundredth time already that I'm glad that I'm not the only one out there....

I haven't been to the doctor simply b/c I figured I'd look online first to see what I was looking at and so far from what I'm reading its 'normal?'

I started running on the treadmill in the middle of July and by August was doing 5 miles every day for six days. But then for the sake of my knees I went and bought an elliptical and I didn't really start spotting until then now I use it for 1hr 15mins six days a week (I take Sunday off). For the last three weeks, every Monday I spot and it's heavy spotting.

I've had two kids vaginally with my youngest being 15 months. I am not on any birth control, just a herbal supplement called Estro-sense that I've been using for the last three months.

I've just chalked it up to hormones or pushing too hard. The people I've spoken too have just told me that when you start to exercise it can mess up your hormones (and here I thought exercising was GOOD for you lol). It appears in this forum that it's just something else we have to deal with in order to look 'good'.

HELLO Spotting! I have a three year old and a two year old. I just started running an hour to three hours per day. I'm dropping weight fast. Both my babies were c-sectioned out. I'm thinking that and the amount of exercise has something to do with the blood.

Like all the other posts, I too have spotting after heavy exercise. I came across this thread when researching and found a link that I hope is helpful to others. I only made it past the first page of posts, so this could be a repeat, but I found it the most helpful in looking for answers.

I'm so glad I found this forum! I'm 20, just started hard core exercising after gaining ten pounds from marriage. Since gaining weight is something I NEVER did in my entire life, I just started exercising hard core, everyday. I am usually on time with my cycle, and it is always extremely heavy. But this month, since exercising, I have only slightly spotted and thats it! I feel extremely bloated though, and I am not on birth control. All we use is condoms because I haven't found the right birth control after months of trying them out beforehand. So im not sure if maybe im pregnant or it really is because of exercise alone. I am scared because what if a condom broke and we had no clue? I've heard that can happen.

Hello to all you spotters!!!

I was always athletic but I let myself get lazy over the past few years. I gained a lot of weight and finally decided I needed to do something about my problem. I went all out and bought the "Insanity" workout DVDs - a 60-day body transformation program.

It was tough starting out but I did my best. During the second week of the program my period started and it was AWFUL. The pain was excruciating and I bled like a river (I always had a normal flow). By the third week I was really getting into shape and keeping up with everyone on the videos. I pushed myself to do the best I possibly could. Two weeks after my period ended, I started spotting with a gross dark-brown discharge. It happens during and after my workout (which is every day) and is very annoying. It's been going on for two weeks now. I should be getting my period again but I'm quite sure there's nothing left inside of me to have a period.

I've read that if you start a heavy workout program, spotting can occur. Also, if you are regularly active, such as an endurance athlete, spotting and irregular periods are common. It all has to do with hormone balances in our bodies. I'm hoping once I am back in shape and move on to leading a normal active lifestyle things will go back to normal for me. Even if I get the occasional spotting, I still feel lucky. There are so many people out there with real health issues. If all of us spotters are able to be active and happy and the only thing we have to worry about is an inconvenience, we really are lucky.

By the way I have lost 15 pounds and my clothes are falling off of me! I will take the spotting over being out of shape any day!

Hi ladies,

I am 38, and I have been having this problem since I was 21. I have gone to see sevral OBGYN and they all say the same thing, It's nothing. I have searched the web for year and no one has an ans. My next step is to email Dr. OZ ( urge you all to do the same, so that it can become a topic of research and we can all get an answer to; why is it happening? If this going to be condition a signal to having a difficult pregnancy? Is this a sign of an illness?

I have also had spotting after almost every single run for the last 45 days. The spotting is only there after a run and there is only bleeding when I run. Even if i just run for 15 minutes on a treadmill as a warm-up, I will spot. I run 3 days a week and have done so for about 15 years - I'm 41 now. My periods are usually normal, every 26 days. I do have hypothyroidism so that may be the cause but this has never happened before. Also, I am not on BC nor is there any way I can be pregnant. I have not been sexually active in a long time. I'm a vegetarian - maybe that is relevant.

I have gone to the doctor for an exam. She said everything looked fine and the test results will be back in about 8 weeks. She also mentioned my cervix is off-centre. She said people are not always symmetrical. But I have never in my life been told my cervix was off-centre and I have an exam every year. I wonder if it has moved recently - is that possible I wonder?

Now I am off to get a blood test to see if my thyroid levels are in check. If they are fine, and if my pap shows no infections or abnormal cells, then my doctor will send me to a gyno for further examination.

I will keep posting to update. There has to be a reason.

I remember spotting once or twice after a hard run back in high school. Now I am 31, have had 2 kids by c-section & have decided to join a gym. After doing some very strenuous lifting, last week, I noticed some pink spotting the next morning. Two days later, I did more strenuous lifting and the spotting came back but heavier. This was accompanied by some minor cramping. I spoke with a physical trainer and she said to lift lighter weights and take it easy when you are beginning a workout regime. It has been a week now & I thought the spotting was gone but after lifting some heavy babies, I am lightly spotting again tonight & feeling crampy. It's nice to see that I am not the only one this is happening to. I will consult a doc though if this continues much longer, just for peace of mind. (I just had a pap & it was normal too).

update: My thyroid levels came back fine and so did my tests for infections/stds. Still waiting for the pap smear results and my doctor is sending me to a gyno to get checked out. Hopefully I will get an answer soon! and hoping it's something minor of course.

Kblough,

thanks for the info on the caffeine affecting the estrogen. I spot as well AND i drink large amounts of tea. This spotting just started last week when I began working out but when you mentioned the caffeine that caught my eye. Has anyone else heard of this happening with caffeine ? This has NEVER happened to me before when I worked out.

I am 25, and just worked out for the first time since High School and I also discovered some blood coming out, and was even cramping (and it's not even near my time of the month, more like ovulation time), but this site made me feel better, maybe we're all just freaks as women that are not meant to do strenuous exercise. I am going to get in shape though, if I have to bleed out while I do it. I am also about to graduate Nursing school, and I think part of it is that our uterus is a muscle, and when our muscles get strained, they contract. So when our uterus contracts, it just forces a little blood out b/c that is what our uterus does-it bleeds. I don't think we should worry too much! :-)

Wow! Googled with nerves on high... just came in from walking/jogging and again went and found spotting after emptying my bladder!!! My nerves shot up again and I thought I better see if I could find something on line... before heading for a nervous breakdown and a drive to the doctor! I have walked for years... but added jogging this winter on treadmill and now outdoors. Never with spotting from walking, so it has to be the jogging. Age 48. Thankful for the website and all the posts to show me I am not dying. 8-|

I was google(ing) this information and came across this blog. I'm glad I did bc I was freaking out prior to reading these post. I run often and whenever i do a long run like yesterday (10.5 miles and up) I spot. I wasn't sure if it was related to the running or something else, but it is annoying. Going to the doctor tomorrow actually, so I will check in.
