Hi all! I have been always working out for the last 12 years. But recently ( age 39) I started working more - slightly hard core exercises and heavier weights but I started spotting after the workout. It seems that it seems to be normal. Shall I slow down on my workouts? Thanks.

I have seen this same thing happen to me just recently it only happens when I do excercises for my abdomen area, ie: leg crunches. Its just spotting but enough for a panty liner and just today it increased just a little with darker color spotting? I am much older almost twice your age though?

I'm so glad I'm not the only one with this problem.  I just had my first problem with spotting two days ago.  At first I thought that maybe it had to do with my menstrual cycle because I had just recently ended my period.  I got to thinking about it more and thought that maybe strenous activities could bring something like this on.  The very day that the spotting occured I had just had an excellent bike ride all over town.  One place I took my bike was up this hill.  My very first time.  I swear I had to stop at least twice!!  Took me awhile.  It's a nice little hill.

I'm 40, have had 2 kids, the last one was 4 years ago..and I finally decided that about 80 lbs overweight, it's TIME.  I've been working out for 2 weeks now, almost 3, and I experience spotting after a really good workout.  I think it's estrogen related, after reading these posts, and I'm good.  Thank you all for chiming in on this...It's nice to know I'm not alone.

I have the same problems. I just read that our muscles are contracting and pushes out any blood we have. I felt this was abnormal so I also consulted with my doctor, he also said it is normal. Althought it is quite uncomfortable to get it after running or excercising.

When I turned 30, I noticed that I would have severe cramping (after runnning) and then a sudden onset of light spotting accompanied by a couple days of brown spotting. So, naturally, I went for a sonogram. Turns out I had a cyst on my left ovary almost the same size as my left ovary and it was prone to bursting and bleeding. Well, I was told cysts come and go and that BCPs would help. I don't like taking them because for some reason I feel like a crazy woman on them. Six months later, I decided to do a check-up sonogram. Turns out, now I have a cyst on my Right ovary and one somewhere in the entry way to my cervix! My doc tells me that I may have endometriosis. I become alarmed a bit, for I hear that this condition may cause infertility. I think to myself "damn aging process..."  I go for a visual exam in another week to see what might be the diagnosis. But just yesterday, I've been getting back into running because I have too much junk in the trunk (5'6"-170pounds) and noticed spotting and brown discharge. I hate not knowing exactly the issue and how to correct it! Why do us women have to have such fickle bodies....makes me wish I were a man...but then other times...not sooo much.

SO when I turned 30 a year and a half ago, I noticed a strange phenomenon of spotting after strenuous exercise. I went for a sonogram. Turns out I had a cyst pretty nigh the same size as my left ovary prone to bursting and bleeding.  I was told that these things diminished on their own and that it was nothing to be concerned about, except that I should be on BCPs. I don't like them because even on the lowest dose, I feel like a crazy woman. So, 6 months later I go for a follow up. Now, I have a cyst on my Right ovary and a cycst growth on the passageway to my cervix. My doc says I may have endometriosis. I'm a bit concerned because I here it causes infertility. I started running again (junk in the trunk 5'6" and 170 pnds.) and I am having spotting and brown coming outa me. I go for a visual exam in about a week. I dislike how the woman's body is so fickle. But whatevs

I have this problem too! I'm used to strenuous exercise, but just recently started training to run a 5K. Now that I'm running for 20 minutes or so at a time, I've started spotting after my workouts. I'm not on BC, I've never had sex, and I don't have any polyps (according to my doctor.)

My conclusion is that it's probably something to do with the hymen, maybe? Even if you've had sex, you still have a hymen, and you can still injure it. Maybe running stretches and causes the hymen to tear a little for us? That would explain bleeding.

In any case, it doesn't seem serious, so I'm going to continue to run and just make sure I have a panty liner on.

I have three kids my first two are vaginal births three years apart and I had my first c-secion year ago two years apart from my last vaginal its been a year since I've had my c-section I had a slip up in October that resulted in me taking the Plan B morning after pill. Yes it messed my period up causing me to bleed twice in the same month since October. Today I started exercising and noticed that I started bleeding. Last night i was also active. My question is will the scar tissue cause me to bleed when i do workouts? Or is my period abnormal from the plan B still

I had this problem after my 2nd c-section and went to the dr found I had cyst. Took birth control pills for 3 months. Than was fine. Had my 3rd c-section a year ago picked back up on heavier workouts. Here it goes happening again.

Its been a huge relief to find this discussion, I was going crazy searching for the possible reasons for my post-exercise spotting, I was convinced after reading some stupid websites that I have PCOD, but I guess these website doctors don't know much. I'm 22, been running since I was 20 and have swum, cycled, hiked, trekked and been physically active throughout my teenage years. I started experiencing spotting after I became a serious runner, I would bleed a few drops a couple of hours after every intense workout session. But no pain and my periods have always been regular. The spotting has recently started happening even after less intense workouts like swimming or cardio. I guess it's just my body telling me to slow down and nothing to worry about. I've read that some of you ladies have even had babies, so I guess it really doesn't affect the reproductive cycle. Thanks for the posts ladies! I would've probably quit physical exercise out of sheer fear if I hadn't stumbled across this discussion!

I'm really glad I'm not the only one experiencing this. I've been exercising and eating healthily for some time and I have been spotting in between periods since, yet I found that bleeding inbetween periods stopped when I wasn't exercising (during exam perio. - I'm 21 and at university).

My question is, is it usually straight after exercise that you bleed? Or is it sometime after? As my intermenstural bleeding occurs at the same time in between periods each month.

I generally bleed just once anytime within the next 24 hours of an intense workout. But its not very predictable. Sometimes no bleeding occurs. I would say it's nothing to worry about :)
