I've been on opiate treatment for two years for lumbar surgery that didn't work and now have lost medical insurance.I really need something to kill the pain regardless of addiction,it's that bad...I'm unable to work and have very little savings. I can't get medicade because my only child is 19 years old.I can't afford meds let alone doc visits,so I was thinking alcohol treatment.I know this sounds strange, but I don't know what else I can afford to kill the pain.I haven't drank in 5 years so it shouldn't take much to help my pain i hope. Does anyone have input on this hypothosis.Has anyone tried this and will it also help withdrawals from the percocets since I'm forced to quit cold turkey.Or does anyone know of some kind of assistance that may be available.I'm a single parent of one child,48 year old man,and really scared...Any help will be a blessing...
Hi Jim,
I've looked at this post a couple of times and don't know what to say. Have you spoken to your doctor about alternatives? Are you available for any help from the government?
Alcohol treatment is NOT a good idea. You will need to drink progressively more and more to reduce your pain. The damage to your liver and heart just increases the risks to your health. In many ways alcohol is a more dangerous drug than opiates.
Good luck.

Thanks medic-dan for response and looking for any ideas because i'm down to my last straw. As far as help from the government I've only checked with the only source I know which is medicade and don't qualify.,hense looking for any good info on this site. Not really knowledgeable on the alcohol treatment since never really drank expect when I was young. My dr. is no longer available to me without the cost of office visit and really can't afford it at this time.My son is in college and has part time job but refuse to ask him for help, if you know what I mean.Fatherly pride and fear of failure. How fast do you think drinking will take effect on my health.Just hoping on some kind of temp.fix till I can find another.Right now just living day to day.My only work I've done for the last 25-30 years has been carpentry and it has took it's toll on me and always worked for myself 1099 status so no unemployment.stuck between you know what.....Thanks again
Jim,
Sometimes there are clinics around that can help, it depends on where you live. If you're in the US, try the US Department of Health and Human Services. They list federally funded health care clinics, even for those without health insurance.
I'm not a treatment or addiction counselor so I can't really offer any advice. All I can say is to look for other options. Alcohol is not the solution. It is considered to be more dangerous than many drugs.
Hope it helps.

Hey Jimmy! So I have gone through withdrawl numerous times off morphine, diluadid, methadone pills, oxycotin, MS-Cotin and of course norco. In fact I'm going through the hell of withdrawl right now. So as far as the drinking method is concerned, yes it worked for me! I only had to drink 3-4 days straight and I didn't go through any withdrawl symptoms. Also if you have any benzo's take them! I mean valium, clonazepam, ativan or xanax. Also smoking weed helps a lot and if you cannot smoke there are always edibles (I am a medical marijuana patient in CA) however I would buy weed off the street to deal with the hell of withdrawl. You can do it, I've done it probably more than 20 times and i'm only 26. Another option is to go to a methadone clinic and medicare might cover it completely. Methadone is amazing and they do tapper you off and I didn't have any withdrawl symptoms, I would seriously look into a methadone maintance program in your area. I swear methadone saved my life! I hope that this helps!
Thank you so much for answering my post. Sounds like you have been there and done that and your information will be utilized and highly appreciated.Yes withdrawals have me scared, but the continued pain after being off meds I think may overwhelm me even more.I have posted a new topic on buying prescriptions on line from Canada or overseas,do you have any input on that.Have you heard of anything about those?Thank you so much and really hope that what ever is facing you,you will be alright and wish you the best. God Bless you!!!! Jim
