Hi, I have a real problem. The dvla has refused to renew my driving licence due to my diabetes type 1. I really need my licence to get to work. I completed my renewal form but there were questions about hypos and I did fill in that I had a couple last year and now they won't renew. My hypos were minor and I didn't have any symptoms and I didn't require any assistance. They say I have to go a year without any hypos to be renewed. I don't see how that's possible with type 1. Is there anything I can do about this and get my licence back? Has anyone had this problem? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello,

You need to keep in mind that each state has their own rules. Some states have no restrictions on individuals with diabetes. Some states question drivers about their diabetic condition and how well they manage it. There is a lot of leeway here. Some states allow certain diabetes-related issues if they are managed and don't require assistance from a third part. If you are asked questions, you need to pay close attention to your responses as that could me driving restrictions or license removal. According to the ADA, each person should be assessed taking into account medical history. It sounds like you medical history wasn't assessed. There should be a place on the questionnaire to explain whether you needed assistance or not. Didn't you fill that in or is it that the question wasn't there? If the question isn't there, they need to fix that. If that's the case you should be able to fill out another renewal and explain your situation. For the future, keep in mind that you need to know how to fill out these renewals. Sometimes, documents can be tricky in their wording or lack there of. I commend you on your honesty. Chances are you will need to have a medical evaluation to get your license reinstated but you should pass with flying colors. God Bless and take care.
