Hi All.

This forum has been great for some esoteric medical issues so thought Id try. Now while I can see other threads relating to this I can't see this exact issue.

So a few days ago I got the start of a cold which started with a sore throat and sensitive tingling skin (it's my first indication usually that I'm getting I'll). That night I was in bed shivers, cough ,hot and cold but my body temp stayed between 36.5 and 37C so no fever. The following morning I woke up with a pain in my left ear, nothing new as every cold leads to my left ear getting blocked and me losing hearing for a couple of weeks. It was very painful and hot, the following day it had spread to the right ear as well but then I started getting something new I could hear my pulse. Luckily I'm ok with rythmic sounds so while it's annoying it doesn't stop me sleeping or drive me mad, it's worse that I feel almost deaf and my other half can't seem to process this while still trying to talk to me from another room. So I'm looking for someone who's had something similar to figure out how long it took to clear up. I've been given mometasome furate and was on decongestants for a few days.   I have an ear camera so I've seen how bad they were even if they seem to be on the mend now. At first I had to use warm compresses for the pain but now beachams and ibuprofen seem to be doing ok.

Any advice or shared response welcome.

Thanks

Hi, Phil79.

It is difficult to answer this question as it depends on several factors such as the severity of the infection, the type of infection, and the treatment chosen. Generally, most cases of Eustachian tube dysfunction and pulsatile tinnitus caused by infection can be cleared up within a few weeks with proper medical care. However, if the infection is more severe or if the treatment chosen is not effective, it may take longer before the condition is resolved.

Has your condition gotten better in the meantime or do you have the same or worse issues?

So in short it took two 7 day courses of clarithromycin (it went then came back again) and around 6 weeks to clear. The tinnitus stopped as soon as the swelling went down. My hearing in my left ear is about 95% but my right ear is still around 80% with a bit of a clogged feeling in the eustachian tube still. I got a referral to the ent on December 13th and I've been told I'll be waiting around 11 months for an appointment (UK NHS). If it doesn't feel like it's improving properly I may just have to pay for private which could cost a few thousand.
