Me and my boyfriend have been dating for about a year. Every time...and I mean EVERY TIME we have sex, right before I start my period, It turns into extreme pain after we start. And yes, I know....why do it then before your period starts? Well I just think that it will most likely go away...or it wont happen again...Anyways this extreme pain consists of cramps X100 and feeling like I'm going to puke and cannot breathe. It's worse than the cramps that I actually have when I'm on my period. Should I go to the doctor? My mom has had cysts and even had to have her ovaries removed....I just was wanting to know if anyone has had the same problem... :-(

Hi kaytie, if you are having severe cramps like that I think it's a good idea to see a doctor! At least if for nothing else to put yourself on a good course of birth control. I can tell you that it is probable to me that it is cysts however just because your mom had the same problem and it tends to be genetic. Whatever it turns out to be though you should be fine. Let me know how you're doing, okay?

The idea that it will eventually resolve itself is rooted in your fear that you actually have a problem and that it's terminal. You are going to have to push that aside and know that many things can be reversed if you act on it before it causes permanent damage from being chronic for so long (your idea is actually true in reverse). It sounds like your mom probably had endometriosis, and that is hereditary. Right now your body is giving you some very clear and very strong warning signs that something is off balance. Don't let your first visit to the doctor be on a hospital run. I wouldn't bother with the GP, get in to see a guino. They have cameras they can use to actually see what's going on in there. Schedule your visit around the same time as when this problem occurs so that the doctor will definately find something and give you an accurate diagnosis. Until you know what is going on, don't have sex at all. Even during the rest of the month when you're fine, sex may be complicating your condition and making it more severe when it finally pops its ugly head. Also don't use tampons or insert anything into the vagina. You'll want to discuss sex and tampons with the doctor once you know what's going on. Better safe than sorry.

When you see your doctor will need to do some prep work:
1) research your symptoms for matching conditions. Don't go crazy and diagnose yourself. Don't fallow the temptation to get scared from all the doom and gloom either- remind yourself that your reading is on textbook conditions and you are not a textbook. You are merely finding possibilities that you can discuss with your doctor. You are helping your doctor come to the right diagnosis, not deciding the diagnosis for him.

2) keep a very detailed log of your period:
a) What day it starts
b) What day it ends
c) How you felt emotionally and physically each day
d) If any pain was bad enough to require pain medication and how often
e) Mark changes you notice in the color, thickness of the blood or heaviness of your bleeding, pungent smells, if you have discharge before, after, or during your bleeding, etc
f) Write down what you eat and drink
g) Note physical or emotional changes you notice before or after your period, particularly in the days leading to when your condition acts up
That's a lot of information and your doctor probably won't use all of it, but you don't know what information your doctor will need. It's better to throw out some extra info than to leave a hole in the puzzle. Your job is to just paint as clear of picture of what's going on with you as possible. Once your condition is resolved, keep doing the diary. It will help you in the future if you come down with a condition and your doctor needs to know about your period for the last 6 months.

Wow, rae, that's a very extensive post! Are you an expert in that area? I'm really bowled over by how much information that you were able to post and I wish that I could turn it into an article or something so that people can all read it. Thanks for posting it!

Hi Kaytie ,

I was surprised to see your post , I have the exact same problem and completely get what kind of pain you are talking about. The only difference in my case is that I have no hereditary problem. But whenever me and my husband have sex about 3 to 4 days before my period , I black out with the pain and its so excruciating that I feel like puking and can barely feel my body, it is even stranger , because I do have orgasms during our sex !! Please, if someone knew what it is , advise !

I have been having the same problem lately.. I talked to my doctor today about it and she is having an ultrasound down on me to check for endometriosis and cysts. Talk to your doctor to get that figured out - the pain is unbearable and there shouldn't be pain!!

Hi Kaytie,
I'm going through the same thing. Unfortunately last year my doctor discovered a giant cyst and endometriosis.I had no idea that I had those things. It got worst after having a child too. Good luck to you.

I have exactly the same problem, I thought it might get better after having a baby and having the iud put in but I had sex for the first time in a long time, about a week before in due for my period and got the same excruciating pain. I have been diagnosed with a condition called Adenomyosis, ive always thought that this could be contributing to the pain.
