I just spoke with my doctor, it's a rare but serious side effect to this medication (doxycycline) and you need to stop taking this pill immediately! If your breathing, heart rate, chest or throat pain level increase you need to go to the ER, as soon as possible! I've never been allergic to a thing in my life so I had no idea what an allergic reaction was like until I called my doctor and described my symptoms (feeling like a pill is stuck in my throat, slight chest pains, diarrhea, headaches, fatigue, joint pain, nausea, vomiting, pain when swallowing, and itching). Contact your doctor or go to the emergency room if you are experiencing something like this. I'll keep you updated on what happens when my doctor calls me back to let me know what I need to take now in place of this medication and what to do for this pain!

Doxycycline can cause dysphagia- difficult swallowing frequency and reason are unknown. The esophagus contracts top to bottom in sequence when we swallow -parastalysis- so pills and food are pushed down eventually. Sometimes if it is scratched the sensation is felt as something is stuck because of the type of nerve supplying the area or it spams. Most resolve in a few hrs but some feel it longer. Carbonated drinks stimulate the esophagus better than water and works well If not a shot of glucagon in the arm in the ER will relax it and dislodge most things - meat though is harder to and those go for scopes. Anyway, sorry about my nerdy-ness but am an ER PA see it all the time :)

It took about two weeks but I am 100% better now. I was burping constantly too! My dr said to drink a lot of milk, so i ate ice cream instead :) It sucks for days and then it'll just go away. I was freaking out.

This happened to myself as well with Doxycycline. I feel like maybe the pill didnt go all the way down and then I went to bed and it ate a hole in my throat or something. Its been 2 days now and I still feel it.

Omg I'm experiencing the same sh*t right now. I take 3 antidepressants daily (150 mg Lustral) and have a healthy digestion so I've never had such a symptom. Tonight I took my pills while I was lying down and without water just like u and after 1.5 hours I can still feel the pills. Plus I can't help burping and the pain in my stomach is so severe..

Does anyone else have these symptoms after taking antidepressants? (I had it after taking Lustral while lying down and without water)

I can't sleep, the pain is unbelievable and it's 04.35am here.. I tried to drink something hot to dissolve the pills but it was like drinking fire.. Now I'm drinking cold milk and feel slightly better.

I dunno if I should call an ambulance or just wait till the morning.. I feel like crying, I'm used to severe headaches etc. but this thing feels like there is an acid pill in my stomach and chest.

actually a pill could be stuck in her throat. I had the exact same problem. I went to the doctor to find out that i have holes in my throat that cause pills or food to get logged. the throat and esophagus are rather long in reality so it could feel like what ever the obstruction is, is in the upper part of the chest or lower part of the throat. there is prescription medication that you can take to dissolve the obstruction however if this does not work then you will have to go see a surgeon to remove it. but ask or doctor because you could very well have this same issue or like someone else said it could be another problem. talk to your doctor, after all they are the professionals.

I have the same problem and I have been taking Doxycycline for about a week. Every time I eat it feels like I am swallowing glass. Calling my Dr. on Monday and telling her about my side effects and that I need a different medicine. It has to be the medicine.
