I have similar symptoms right now after taking Clindamycin. After doing some online research, I sounds like we are suffering from drug-induced esophagitis, which is inflammation of the esophagus caused when the medication is swallowed without washing it down with enough water or lying down immediately after taking the medication. Residue from the pill stays in the esophagus leading to the inflammation. From what I've read, the esophagus should heal on its own but it could take up to 2 weeks. Please keep in mind that I am not a doctor but I hope this helps.

I was prescribed Doxycycline yesterday. Or Levofloxacin, to be more specific. Took it last night for the first time. Having all these problems: Feels like something stuck in the back of my throat, not clearing, trouble swallowing, talking, etc., and pain there down to my upper chest. From only 1 pill. I won't take anymore. Avoid this drug. I wish I never went to the doctor.

I took one day of doxycycline and I woke up in middle of the night with what I thought was extreme heartburn, it felt like the pill before bed did not go down but I knew I drank sufficient water. I have been taking so much antiacids and other stuff every day for over a week but has not done anything! I feel like that antibiotic has burned a hole in my throat or something! If I go to the dr. He will probably just give me more medicine...... I don't want anymore medication! Ugh....

Hello everyone.

I am having similar symptoms. I have been taking generic Zoloft for 3 months now and just this morning I took it with out water because the pill is so small. Never have I ever had any problems taking pills, in the past 33 years or since taking this.  After about 10 minutes I started having pains in my chest like heartburn and about 3 times I have feel like gagging and I have been belching as well....it has been almost 3 hours since I took the pill.  I am hoping it subsides soon but some of you are saying it could take a couple weeks to go away.

I guess my questions is to all of you is have you continued to take the medications or stop until the pain is resolved?  I don't want to just up and stop taking an antidepressant - I don't think that is safe.

Any ideas

Thanks

J

Just woke up to this exact description about burning from my throat through my whole chest area. My head is foggy and my ears seem clogged like they need to pop but don't. Took doxycycline hyclate before bed with little water and about one hour later this happened. Have been up for 2 hours and the pain has not subsided. Going to doctor in morning. My prescription was to prevent Malaria, one other time I took the pill on an empty stomach an hour before breakfast and ended up vomiting. My prescription label says to take it at bedtime. It also says to take with food and then below says without food. I don't remember any stressed precautions given to me by my doctor about what seems to be a common issue. And thank god for this forum it has helped tremendously.

Hello everyone. I have been taking Doxycycline capsules for epididymitis. Today is day 8 of 10 @ 2 pills a day of 100mg each. I am a 30 year old male, not so much super healthy (slightly overweight, cigs). Man this is a tough antibiotic. The first day I took it on an empty stomach, learned the hard way like most of you.

My doctor and pharmacist didn't give me any warnings or side effects or directions. Unbelievable, really, with all the stuff that can pop up.

Side effects are:

nausea and slight lightheaded/dizziness (even with food). Please don't take on an empty stomach.

I also had a weird pain in my neck and right arm one night. Thought I was having a heart attack, but pushed through and I am fine.

Now today, I feel like I have a lump in my throat. I was feeling weird last night (bloated mostly) so I didn't take it. This morning I took after I had a sausage mcmuffin (just meat and bread). HUGE mistake. 10 minutes after I swallowed the pill i threw it up. The "mild spicy" was too much, the intestines are very fragile with doxy. I waited 3 hours and took another one with a sandwich (no cheese). I felt fine, but I still had the sensation of a lump in my throat. Let me say, your mental state can severely impact how your body reacts to things, especially drugs like doxy. I am a hypochondriac. I have accepted it. I try to keep a calm mind when stuff like this happens, but my immediate reaction is I am dieing. I went to the ER, had a brief talk with the nurse. The lump sensation is not inhibiting me from eating, swallowing, or breathing. It just feels ... like something is stuck in there. After reading a lot of "doomsday" posts, I came across one that said drink a carbonated beverage. So, I got a coca-cola. Almost instant relief. Carbonated beverages require the esophagus to work harder than regular water. But remember, don't stop drinking water, as you will become dehydrated.

I am not a doctor, but I have done a lot of research on this, and this is what I have come up with. Doxycycline kills all bacteria in your stomach and intended places (mine was the testicle for example). Everything. So, there is nothing in the gut to help fight things and move stuff along. It goes through, but not normally. I have been slightly constipated (getting better now) and I figured this adds right on to my theory. The intestinal flora practically disappears when taking Doxy, so upset stomach is bound to happen. Eat a meal (stay away from vitamins, calcium, iron, etc. Although these will not hurt you, they will slow the healing process) before you take the pill. STAY HYDRATED. I also eat Activia about 2 hours or so (never less) after I drop the pill. I think it helps. The probiotics help build your stomach up before the doxy tears it down again. I also believe that just like anything else with the body, irritation causes inflammation. I am thinking that is why I felt bloated. After the bloating went down, i was urinating more frequently, and I'm thinking NOW WHAT? haha. but its mostly clear, no blood, no pain. I'm thinking my insides chilled out and the pressure was released from my bladder allowing stuff to run through it easier. I have read if you have pain urinating, urinating blood, dark yellow, or pink (i know right lol), see a doctor immediately.

Try to stay calm and relaxed. Elevated heart beat and stress can cause more damage. I had an allergic reaction to animal dander over the winter, my panicness (? lol) caused my skin to flare up even more, causing me more panic. It's hard, but try to stay calm. If you are experiencing anything that you feel is too much, see the doctor and have him put you on something else, but from what I hear, doxycycline is the best tetracycline antibiotic to take. Try to get through the nausea and other junk, because it is worth it. After 6 days, my testicles felt so much better.

I am at work, and have been typing this post off and on for about 1.5 hours. Sipping the coca-cola periodically. The lump in the throat sensation is 100% gone.

Also, DO NOT STOP TAKING DOXY unless told by doctor. The infection can mutate and come back much worse and be resistant to doxycycline.

Hang in there.

I hope this post helps.

I took doxycycline yesterday morning with just a sip of water (didn't know you were supposed to drink a full glass) and experienced those exact symptoms. I've been on it since Wednesday night. I called my doctor and she said that I had probably just irritated my esophagus and since I was catching it so early it shouldn't be anything more serious. She told me to get a liquid antacid so I will see if that helps.

Could anyone who has reported this experience tell us if what their doctor prescribed actually worked??

Tiffplays what ended up happening?? These symptoms describe exactly what I'm experiencing. My doctor said it should go away soon and that I should take antacid liquid, but if it's something more serious I would really love to know about it right away. Thanks so much.

Took a liquid antacid for a couple days. After the second day the pain mellowed out to a discomfort and I didn't really notice too much, and now I'm totally fine. I kept taking the doxycycline and did not have any problems. It will all be okay :)

I had the same thing happen about 5 days ago. Took a doxycycline capsule late at night with little water and layed down right away. Woke up with a swollen throat feeling and chest pain. It's been 5 days now, hot liquids seem to hurt the worst. Burp a lot, and chest pain is pretty bad. I'm going to give it a few weeks and report back, it would be sweet if more people reported how long and what helped them to get through this scary ordeal. Thanks.

So my doc prescribed this med for my bronchitis. The same thing happened to me. However, my wife told me to drink a cold glass of milk and it stopped the burning, nauseating feeling almost instantly. Feeling much better these days. Give a glass of milk a try guys!

Been through this myself...

Yes it is painful and very annoying to have a tablet stuck in your lower throat. But in most cases the tablet will disolve after a couple of hours, no matter how big and hard it was. You will find that the obstruction is no longer the tablet itself but the gastic reflux from your stomach (and the irritation it creates), which gives this sensation of "something stuck". Some people will be able to continue to drink and eat, to try to "push down" the problem, but in my case the obstruction was complete and i couldn't pass any fluid through.

What I did is to take gaviscon (an alkalyne sirup used for gastric reflux problems). It disolved the excess acid in my oesophagus in 30 seconds !!! and my throat was cleared, and I could pass fluids again. happy ending...

It is not necessarily common wisdom to drink an alkaline solution, as most people will expect an acid (like a fizzy drink) to scrape their oesophagus and clear the pathway, but when gastric acid reflux is the obstruction, then it is the only thing that will work.

Hope it helps someone...
