I everyone. Just wanted to share my experience from 15 years ago. I was using nailtiques brand polish on my nails and they lifted off the bed all the way to the base. I used some water with food coloring in it to see how far down it went. I used a dropper of the dye under each nail and the blue color went all the way down.

Anyway, my dermatologist told me it was the formaldehyde in the polish. I stopped using it and it went away.

I have since realized that formaldehyde is in all new clothes on the racks of stores and that is why I always get a migraine from shopping. Formaldehyde allergy. Even for those not allergic, it is a nasty chemical and should not be used at all in cosmetics or clothing.

Check your polish. It is likely you are allergic to a chemical in it. Who knows what else is in it! If not formaldehyde or toqueline. Canada and some European countries have banned its use. I wish America would too.

Good luck to everyone. :-)

I would love to hear more information if you have access to journals that I most likely can't access. My nails started doing this ithin the last month. Started hen I lost my pinky nail first. Then the other nails started lifting up and becoming white at the top where they are lifting and gradually the white part moves don the nail bed as the nail detaches from the bed. I was diagnosed with SLE (Lupus) when I was 26. I am 57 now and this has never happened before. I was just diagnosed with hyperthyroidism in June and have been on Synthroid at varying levels while they try to find the right dose. That seems to be the link to many of the other people with this problem. The thyroid started when I fell asleep and was almost comatose when my kids found me and they saw the thyroid on a CT scan of my lungs by accident. My TSH as 300! It is no around 3, I don't remember exactly what the last test revealed, but it has come down to less than five after playing with the Synthroid dose. You are the first person who has mentioned Lupus. The only Lupus drug I still take is prednisone, 5 mg. a day. Have been off all other Lupus meds for over ten years. I was on dialysis for 5 years and had a transplant in 2006. I experienced an acute rejection in 2008 and have been on peritoneal dialysis since then. Lots of other boring drugs that probably don't have anything to do with it, like Protonix, Effexor XR, and Zocor. Some vitamins. Anything you can find to help me would be much appreciated. I have already lost two nails and three more are lifting up and will probably come off in the next week or two if they follow suit with the other two that came off. Just ordered some tea tree oil and emu oil online but haven't received. Will see if it makes a difference. I've heard it helping others, some on this blog.

Thank you for any help!

I've had this on both hands for about 12 years. My doctor tried many things but none had any effect. I recently read about some symtems of gluton intolerance . I've gone gluten free for about a year and my nails began to recover almost immediatly.

Interesting. My nails tend to go through a "heal" and "degenerate/lift" cycle but there's no constant how long each cycle seems to last. Are you, or anyone else, experiencing this? TH

Oh, my. You practically just listed my health issues exactly! How weird! I don't have the sarcoidosis... Don't know what that is and hope I don't find out.... My nails are doing the same thing. I wore gel on my nails for about three months and when I had it removed my nails were in terrible shape, then the pulling away began. I just assumed it was trauma to the nails. Hoping it will improve. BTW... The pain from right side of back around to the front sounds like gallstones to me. I had my gall bladder removed several years ago, and that's where my pain was. At first I had it just occasionally, then it gradually increased in incident and severity. Good luck!

My nails have whitened and lifted for 20 yrs. Any vitamins with fillers (mag stearate) or Magnesium, Calcium or Antibotics cause it within hours. First a soreness - then loosened white nail by the next day. I have tests - not fungus. Not Psoriosis. I am hypothroid. Age now = 59. Doctors dont know squat about it.

4 of my nails (always ring fingers and pinkys) also get sore, whiten and then lift within a few days. They have done this for years. I do take vitamins, Calcium and Magnesium. I have never thought to relate it to those. VERY INTERESTING !! I agree doctors don't know squat. They just tell me once they lift they probably won't reattach.

Thanks for the tips! I wonder if it's safe to use Nailtiques under gel polish that cures by a UV light? I know the nail techs slightly rough up the surface of your nail before applying a disinfectant, and then apply gel polish...I'll find out!

I have 1 nail that lifts in a thin column--it's still attached on both sides...and it will eventually heal itself. It's just frustrating, using darker polishes until it heals.

The chemicals i gel polish are well known to cause onycholysis over time!

I found this post when googling Onycholysis and nail polish allergy!
Although i have only used common garden variety ones like OPI, china glaze, maybelinne, Bourjois etc, this is exactly what has happened to my nails everytime i used nail poilsh over the last 15 years!
It goes away if I stop wearing it, and the healthy nail grows out, but as soon as i put polish on, and wear it for a while, this is what happens!
I had to work it out myself by trial and error, and went nail polish free for 3 years, before testing only on my toe nails.
I wore nailpolish straight for about a month )only 2 applications that lasted, until i felt a pin prick pain in my big toe nails, took the polish off and saw the big air bubbles and discolouration under my toes nails :/ - however, my fingernails i kept unpolished were still perfect and thats when it clicked that the chemicals are doing it!
I am going to try Acquarella, a 10 free polish and hope that works without damage!

I received an e-mail from BABA mail it said to use Listerine on nails twice a day for this problem. I have been soaking mine for about four days so far, 3 times a day. they feel better it feels like they are drawing under there so something is happening . I felt like twice a day might not be enough due to all the washing we do. Good luck guys hope it works. Dusty
