Try doing something called a sinus irrigation...you can find information about it on about.com. It is a mixture of salt, baking soda, and water. Thats what seemed to help me.

I have had the same symptoms for almost 8 months. It definately comes and goes. I have read an article about the circcoid (spelling) muscle becoming irritated, like a charlie horse, which causes a tight feeling in the throat. Most people feel better just knowing that it is most likely not cancer. I am still planning to go get a scope of my throat, just to rule out anything serious. It is an interesting article from a Otoronologist (spelling) in Oregan. He lists symptoms that are almost exact to what most people on this forum have been complaining about. The good news is your not alone, the bad news is there is no real known cause or cure. It seems to just disappear on its own. So there ya go.

Well just to throw everyone a curve ball. I have a problem similar to what many of you are describing. I have seen specialist, but nothing physical could be found and it was concluded that it was related to stress and anxiety. Have any of you every had a panic attack from this sensation in your throat? The feeling that you can’t swallow?. If so, you might want to start looking into anxiety, and your daily life style.

I have been with this sensation for over 6 years now, it comes and goes. Just wanted put this info out incase some of you have an anxiety problem to cut the cost of extensive medical visits.

Cheers.

I experienced the same symptons for several years until I was treaded for yeast in the mouth. After several rounds of Nystatin, the throat clearing finally went away. It had been so bad that it sometimes took my breath away and raised my blood pressure. It simply made my life so miserable. Discovered this cure by accident. See if your toungue gets really white looking. You can also take the yeat test. You can look the spit test up in Google that will also tell you if you have yeast. My guess is that you do if you were treaded with medication for a bad chest cold.

Good luck.

Check out your tonsils with an ENT. For damn near almost 6 months I was having breathing problems and feeling like I was chocking. I finally found out that my tonsils are 4 times normal size and I need them removed. Its very frustrating but to finally know the issue is an amazing feeling. Now if those damn tonsils would just stop

I've got the same problem. It seems to go away when I lay off the coffee.
I think it's partly due to the acid in the coffee, and the caffeine.
I've read that the stomach makes a "protective" mucous layer if too much acid is either in the stomach or on it's way to the stomach. Do your own research though. The mucous I have is sticky, white or clear, and foul-smelling. It also can be pulled out in clumps. My ears click, my nose is stuffed up, and i'm always tired from the congestion. Yes I do have allergies, but i've narrowed it down to the coffee and caffeinated beverages that cause the worst symptoms.

It's hard, but if I stay away from those beverages for a few weeks, my symptoms almost disappear. Good luck everyone!!

I'm so glad to have found this thread!
I've been thinking my symptoms were just the aftermath of a bad chest infection (I had in September) but they never went away.

I have:

Really bad tasting flem
Seems to mix between coming from my chest and nasal passages
Light green/Yellow in colour
Tastes sometimes sour, powder and gone-off milk like.
Recently started wheezing in the mornings, even though i'm 22 and run 3 miles a day.
Always feels like I could cough up something, but always just a little bit of flem
I feel pressure in my eyes and sometimes dripping in the back on my nose (the same awful tasting stuff).

I've been to see my doctor, who gave me Amoxicillin or somthing, an antibiotic similar to penicillin. However this does not help.

I'll be goin back soon discuss this.

I find that after talking to a crowd (my work) its much worse. The taste is so awful its unbarable.
I also find its worse after drinking certain liquids, like milk and beer.

I'm going to try some of the suggestions on here, but if I find anything out i'll let you all know.

Good luck snot-sufferers!

I've had the flu for about a week and just woke up with thick phlem in my throat. Had a heck of a time trying to cough it out and get it out of my thoat and / or swallow it. It was so thick and sticky in my throat. I went into the kitchen and drank a glass of water. Then ate an apple. Then I garggoled (spelling incorrect?) with kitchen salt, about a table spoon of salt, in 1/4 cup of hot water (strong salty taste) , several times, holding my head back to make sure the salt brine is leaking down my throat, and then spit out this salt brine. That really helped to loosen up the phlem so I can hack it out and spit it into the sink. My throat finally cleared up about 1/2 hour later. I recall as a child that my mom told me that salt dissolves mucus immediately, and it does. Try it, it works for me.

I am going to try the salt water thing, it sounds like something that has merrit.

I have had this problem since I moved to the fraser valley in BC 15 years ago. I was told by one doctor that it was an allergy to either the climat (being the moisture in the air) or to the smog. I find that if I leave here and go to a drier climate that it takes about 3 days but it usually clears right up, when I come back it takes 1/2 a day to return. I too have found that it is worse in the winter months, and sometimes wake up gasping for breath. I have found that it seems to get worse though after eating certain food, like milk, ice cream, yogurt, as well as orange juice.

My uncle told me to eat a plain piece of bread when it happens and the bread will help absorb and clear whats in my throat. It's a hit and miss treatment, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

WELL, I SEEM TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AS MOST OF YOU. IT GETS SO BAD THAT WHEN I'M SLEEPING I HAVE DIFFICULTY BREATHING AND I TEND TO STOP BREATHING AND I WAKE UP GASPING FOR AIR. I'VE TALKED TO THE DOCTORS AND THEY SAY I HAVE SLEEP APNEA. I THINK IT'S SOMETHING ELSE THOUGH, BUT THAT'S JUST ME. I PLAN ON SEEING AN EAR, NOSE, THROAT SPECIALIST TO SEE IF IT'S SOMETHING ELSE.

Okay here is how it is. You have this flem substance stuck in your throat, as do I. I've had it for almost 3 years and it has not gone away. It feels as though you have to constantly hack it up like make that irritating sound in your throat to go spit it out... which I do. but more than accurately. It does NOT hurt at all. Not even a pain AT all. It's just irritating because it is stuck in your throat and sometimes when I try to hack it up I poe or rub up against the mid or parts of my throat to help it come out because it's so bad. It is All day and all night. When you go to sleep at night when you awake you will have this flem stuck in your throat. Easiest solution...spit it out. then hygiene brush teeth etc. GO EAT something because you will have awful smell in your mouth...but it comes back anyway. It's a curse... Oh yeah... you constantly have the feeling you have to swallow all the time because of the fact it is stuck in your throat... It feels like it goes down but it comes RIGHT back up as soon as your done swallowing. What more can I say? These are the symptoms. OH OH! NOT TO MENTION! I have NEVER EVER smoked in my life. EVER. NO LIE. EVERRRRR..... I got thiss sometime when I was 18, I went to chicago and I came back to Florida with it... I've gotten used to it... might as well... I have no insurance or anything almost homeless. %-)
