Hi. I'm 19 year old female and I have developed one very delicate problem. I haven’t told anything about this to anyone because I'm too embarrassed.
About two months ago I become sexually active and I believe that it has something to do with it. It all started about a week ago when I noticed the first symptoms. They were a fishy vaginal odor, itching, and irritation. You must understand that I have never experienced anything similar and that’s why I panic a bit about all this. I have read some stuff about these infections and it seams to me that I could be infected with some bacteria Gardnerella vaginalis. Could this be the cause or it could be something serious!?

Hello. I just want to tell you that I totally understand why you panic and I that’s why I will try to help you. I have read some stuff about this bacteria you’ve mentioned and what I didn’t know is that this bacteria normally lives in vagina, but in certain situations when natural balance of this bacteria is changed- it is causing Gardnerella infection. These situations could be provoked with sexual intercourse!
You have almost all typical symptoms!
You must know that this isn’t anything serious and that you should talk with some gynecologist about possible treatment. It includes antibiotics such as metronidazole and clindamycin.

I was tested for STDs about a year ago. My girlfriend (the only person I've been with in any way since being tested) has just recently gotten Gardnerella Vaginalis. Is it an STD? Would it have been detected when I got tested for STDs if this came from me? If I've now gotten this from her, will it effect me and is there treatment for men? Please reply ASAP.

Thanks.

Gardnerella is not an STD it is simply just a bacterial infection. Yet it can be giving to guys if not using a condom so you can go to your doctor and tell them that your girlfriend has been diagnosed and you would like antibiotics. Since it's not a STD it wouldn't show up on your test or your girlfriends STD test, it showed up when the did the paps smear of her vagina. Both people need to be treated or it could be passed from one person to another and be contracted again even if your girlfriend treated it. It can be just an infection but also if it goes untreated for a long period of time it can lead to infertility in women. Also for the girl with the vibrator you need to clean it because again the bacteria stays on there and even though you treat it yourself if you use the vibrator without it being cleaned you will get it again. Also just other information it is also hereditary in some families and I found that cutting out a lot of acidy drinks and food helps, alot with the burning or itching that women might have with it. Drinking a lot of water helps, because it flushes out a lot of toxins and the acid in your body. Just some tips for everyone because I've had it for years because of the hereditary part. Also if you receive and antibiotic from your doctor (this is for the women) take a pill to treat a yeast infection called asphodopholis (not sured if spelled right) because sometimes taking an antibiotic leads to a yeast infection

Its not an STD - its an infection, caused by bacteria.

Your body already has the bacteria, and usually they are well controlled and harmless. But sometimes, for some reason, they get out of sync. This can be caused by stress, a new sexual partner, lowered immune system, or just an imbalance of acid levels.

Its easily treated, so don't stress about it. And to the person worried about telling her Fiance... be honest with him. tell him you have an infection. It is possible it may recurr so its better to be open about it. Else he'll wonder what else you are hiding :-)

Okay Soo i have come up positive for Gardnerella & have become recently more confused by my docters they say this is not an STD & if my partner is a male it cannot be passed there is no need for him to be on any kinda of Antibiotic. I was tested for stds almost maybe 4-5 months ago & came up clean but i have since had sexual relations with my partner of two years. So i know that if i were to come up positive for anything new i would have contracted this from him. The clutures are yet to come back but what has come back positive was the gardnerella im now on medicin for that & is being treated i have been assured its not an std and cannot be passed to my partner by many medical professionals. But what i do not understand is how i contracted it they said it could be many diffrent reasons but if they cant tell me how! how am i sopoussed to prevent it from happening agian & can it cause internal swelling of the cervics? It hards because this infection mimics the same symtoms of stds. & the medicin they have me on is making me very sick i would just like some answers that no one is seeming to give me....

Hi. I am 22 and I've been suffering from many injections for 2 years. I keep going to see doctors, they all give me medicines but I cannot get rid of such infections. And about half a year ago my doctor told me that I have gardnerella vaginalis. She kept giving me some medicines, but still it doesnt heal. At my last visit to her, she gave me cleocin and floragyn. I used them and for about a month I felt like healthy however after a month it emerged again!!!! I am so tired of dealing with this ilness. I am afraid of being sexually active again and since this infection, I avoid sex. I dont wear tights and I wear cotton underwear. I cannot understand why it doesnt heal. Please help me. I have fears that it will cause another illness or even infertility.

Men can have gardnerella in their urethra but it is not necessary for it to be treated in men if they are asymptomatic (and they usually are), because (and the CDC says it's not necessary as well), the reasoning why being that women whose partners have been treated, still tend to be reinfected just like women whose partners have not been treated. So it's rather a waste of medication to treat something that will come back.

Our vagina is full of  bacteria, and it's the overgrowth of the bad, or the loss of the healthy ones that causes BV or Yeast infections to happen.
