Well, you have to come into contact with the blisters to get them. They are skin to skin transmittable.

It is highly unlikely you would get herpes from kissing someone on the lips who has only genital herpes and no sores around their mouth.

There are two types of herpes viruses, HSV-1 and HSV-2. Generally, HSV-1 is oral herpes (ie, cold sores), and HSV-2 is of the genitals. You can contract oral herpes(cold sores) from kissing, half the population has it.... many people acquire it during childhood. However, it IS possible to contract GENITAL herpes (HSV-2) around the lips (by giving someone oral sex to a person with genital herpes); or, worse..... you can contract oral herpes (HSV-1) of the genitals by RECEIVING oral sex from someone who has a cold sore!!!!! Once a virus has it's home, it stays there. If someone is diagnosed with genital herpes, and their viral titers were negative for oral herpes, they will not suddenly get a breakout on the mouth.

So in a nutshell... a person with genital herpes(even during an outbreak)cannot give you oral herpes OR genital herpes from kissing alone. If you are only kissing this guy/girl, you can only get cold sores. So basically, QUIT having sex, oral sex, AND kissing. just kidding, but I have....
