The biggest cause is lack of oxygen! Another cause is dehydration. Start drinking A LOT of water, and exercise to get your heart pumping. Get fresh air as much as possible, including when you are sleeping-open that window! Do not smoke anything. If you do not notice an improvement within 2 weeks, see the Dr. about an MRI. It starts when you are a teen because you are inside too much and not getting the exercise you should.

Well I have the electrical "buzzing" going on also. But mine comes and goes and I really can't pinpoint when or why it happens. It's like an electric shock (very mild, but aggravating) that is behind my right ear, above my right ear and into my tongue. It is a very weird and scary feeling. Although it isn't constant, it happens off and on for days at a time. I have nerve degeneration in my right ear that has caused almost complete deafness in that ear.....and a constant, 24/7 ringing in that ear.
I have had a sleep study, they say I don't have narcolepsy, but I think different. I get these spells where I am literally freezing to death and cannot stay awake for any reasons. My kids scream at me while I'm driving to make me stay awake enough to get us where we are going. My
doc looks at me like I'm crazy when I tell them these symptoms.

Hi, I have had a similar experience. A buzzing that stops me from sleeping, seems to react to stress and makes it very scary to drive a car. I thought I was going mad to be honest as I couldn't sleep even though tired and was very worried about not sleeping for another night on the trot. I spoke to NHS24 (u.k. health line) and the nurse suggested it was most likely a bug that was 'migrating' round my body. She suggested paracetemol and it did the trick. I took 2 paracetemol and a 'nytol' (over the counter sleeping pill) and got a good 9 hours sleep. Sadly I had to keep taking the paracetemol for about a week until it was all gone, though at times of stress I sometimes feel it coming back. I think the previous suggestion about getting enough exercise and water is a good one but short fix, try 2 paracetemol.

Hi, I have been suffering through the same sort of thing for about two years. It is hard to describe. To me it is like a phase shift. Even my Tinnitus (which I have had for years) shifts, Visual my eyes go in and out of focus, Kind of like when you cross your eyes on purpose just a little. My brain feels like it is sloshing around (moving, again, how to describe). It has been really hard because no one I have found can understand my description let alone know where to start looking.
Couple of things to consider: How is your C spine. and have you been on any antidepressants (off label use for things like neuralgia) That was when mine started.
I have 3 bulging disks, osteophytes and stenosis in my c5,6,7, as well as Thorasic outlet syndrome, fatigue and uncontrolled sleepiness, sleep apnea...
I hope you find out what it is, it is really frustrating for me almost debilitating.

I'm so glad to hear that I am not the only one who has this annoying buzzing in the head. It drives me nuts. It is in my head constantly. I go to bed with it at night and wake up with it in the morning. I just came from my GP today and she suggested it to be tinitis, but it is not in my ears, it's in my head. The only way I can describe it is if you are surfing through the TV channels and you come to one that you don't get and all you hear is the static. It's like that but not as loud. Please if anyone knows what it is tell me.

I have hade this experience myself. It started when i was a teen i would lay in my bed and it would come on for a few moments. it felt like someone was shocking my brain. if i concentrate i can bring the feeling on at will. I have no idea what this is and no one on this site seems to have the right answers either. At first i taught it was a tumor but i can manipulate it and bring on the feelings at will there must be a name for this!

Ugh, just when I think I may have some new light on these weird symptoms I find myself falling deeper into the rabbit hole....k my stats : I'm now age 29 & I started having what I refer to as "electric shocks" in my brain & I do mean inside of my brain, since I was 16 years old. I thought the buzzing was a new side effect to new medications they had me on for deppression etc I had never felt anything as creepy before but I knew whatever it was it wasn't worth takin that new medication anymore.....so I stopped & eventully the "'buzzing" that started happing randomly from once every few minutes to once every couple hours just seemed to disapear...then after a few years they would pop up for a few weeks then as weird & as random as they came they were gone & everytime I ever bring it up to a doctor they are very & I do mean very qucik to dismiss it....well it's back out of no where & it's worse then ever buzzing is stronger longer harder & more often & yet they dismiss me more likely because I'm on ssd & ssi but I know what I feel & now the damn things have spread to my lips ,toes & finger tips...just a quck burst of enegry in the wrong spot? I mean what the hell is wrong with us cell phone ? something in the water? just hope this is a passing things again cuz this could drive a person mad...off to find more info on us crazy electricaly zapped freakshows...btw just wondering if I'm the only one here who seems to be slammed by these side effects ...& I do mean nearly all fo them ..wonder if that has something to do with this...every medication every drug is sooo toxic hell birth control almost killed me...wish the docs would take this more serious if I had a job I'd loose it due to my head buzzing yeah I know how bad that sounds

I have the buzzing sensation too. At first when it started about 3 years ago, it would switch on and off, just like an electrical switch. I could hear it, a higher pitch fast buzz, but mostly I could feel it. I could tell the I wasn't hearing it with my ears either, but rather feeling it and my brain was somehow making me hear it, but again, not with my ears. It's difficult to describe, and very unnerving/ disturbing.
Anyway, I have not had it diagnosed, but I am pretty confident that this was caused by excessive cell phone use. At the time I was in a long-distance rerlationship, and would be on the phone very often, for hours at a time. One time I even stayed on the phone for 16 hours!!! It was insane. Anyway, after spending an hour or so on the cell phone I would often develop this buzzing in the night. It was horrible and I began to think the cell phone was damaging my brain. I still think so.
I cut back on the cell phone use, and this mostly went away for a couple years, but lately I have been using my mobile a lot again. At first I didn't realize I was using it so much. I'd just be on the phone 20 min here, 10 min there, but I added it up and realized on days when I spent a cumulative hour on the cell phone, I would have this buzzing by evening. I tried cutting back, and now have switched to mostly using speaker phone and holding the device at LEAST 6 inches away from my head, but I feel that some permanent damage has already been done, and I kind of feel like getting rid of my cell phone altogether.
Oh, I forgot to mention that finally, just recently, this buzzing stopped switching on and off, and instead stays on semi-permanently and can be felt throughout my body. I would say, BEWARE OF CELL PHONES!! I only just recently stopped holding the phone against my head, so I am still hoping my brain will recover and the buzzing will go away in the next few weeks or so.

Check this out! Its commonly caused by the discontinuation or lowering of dosage of most antidepressants on the market. Well that's just great b/c I've been having these things.... and just in the past week I stopped taking some pills that were upposed to help IBS... and they were also an antidepressant.... then they determined that i didn't have IBS so he called me and told me I could stop taking the pills now. UGH!
These feelings are really just... wierd. I got zapped by my mother in laws electric fence a few weekends ago and that's the only feeling I could compare it to.
But here's the wikapedia link about it...

I have been having the buzzing in my head since i started taking antidepresients and at first it was like a clicking at first and it clicked so hard that it hurt the eyes. Then after trying new meds, and not liking them the buzzing started, at first the buzzing was low and quiet and then one day when i was really stressed i layed down for a nap and was woke up by a very loud buzz in my head, my body was twitching and i couldn't stop it until the buzzing went away, with each buzz came an electric zap through my head. I too am seeing a therapist and phcyciatrist they believe i am having a sort of siezure, not like epilepsy but more of a phsycological type of siezure. getting too stressed and my body reacts by creating a siezure of sorts. They too are making me feel as if i am crazy and i know i am not.

Hi, I'm glad to have found this forum and thread. It's a really strange feeling and everyone that I've tried to explain it to just gives me funny looks so it's nice to find folks that know what I mean. Does anyone else seem to get it when they move their eyes? I can usually make it happen by moving my eyes quickly. I haven't been to a doc that has any ideas but I do have a history of psych drugs so I wonder if there's a connection somehow. Anyway, good to know that I'm not alone. Take care all.

I agree with everyone. So glad to hear that I am not the only one, and that I'm not crazy. I've tried to describe this very strange sensation to my husband, and the only way that I could describe it is like the static on the tv when it is not on a receptive channel. I find it most intense in the morning, when I am lying in bed. You don't hear it, you feel it. The buzzing is inside my brain. And it will stop briefly every so often, for only about 1 second at a time, but that one second is the most amazing feeling, relaxing and peaceful. I don't know how long I've had it. I do not take medication (I really don't like pills of any sort, but will occasionally take advil if I have a bad headache.. this may be once every 4 months maybe) So I don't get headaches too often. Nor do I drink frequently (one glass of wine maybe 3 times a week). I'm not a heavy cell phone user though I did use it alot a few years ago, so perhaps thats what started it? We do use cordless phones though. I am a non smoker (I quit completely about 12 years ago)
Anywho, I keep forgetting to mention it to my doctor when I see her, so I have no idea what this is. But the cell phone theory makes some scary sense..
