my mother (89) was put on suboxine after coming out of the hospital for a terrible car accident. even though she is on an extremely low dose, (for about 4 months) she cannot get off of it and was again hospitalized because of withdrawal effects. the doctors all tell her to stay on it for the rest of her life. is this safe? Is there any way to get off of this drug for someone so old with anxiety issues?

Hi Denise,
I've been on suboxone for quite a few years (almost 7 years) and have had an extremely difficult time getting off it. For someone who is 89 years old and already struggles with anxiety, I tend to agree with the doctors. Your mother would probably have to detox off suboxone for a long time and it's not an easy or comfortable process. My personal suggestion based on my own experience is for your mother to stay on suboxone for the rest of her life. Long term physical side effects of suboxone can include deterioration of teeth and problems with vision. But for someone who should be able to live out the rest of her life in peace and comfort, I just don't think it's worth the hell she'd have to endure to get off suboxone. For me, after 7 years of consistent suboxone use, I don't have any major side effects except the obvious... dependence. Hope this helps a little. Good luck!

How fast after the first dose of Suboxone does it take to relieve the withdrawal symptoms?
