hi allow I'm Sarah- s, just thought I'd let you know that I'm now 9month preggers and am due in 2 days (4th Jan 2013) all has went well throughout pregnancy, babies growing great and has been so hyper with all his movements. only problem I had was after a while of reducing my methadone intake with drug workers help I started feeling withdrawal symptoms towards the end of day and next morning before going to chemist to get next dose so after talking it through my worker told me that baby was absorbing some of my dose so to keep me from relapsing I agreed to be put back to a 75mls a day dose which I have stuck to and has helped me lead an almost normal life. I did have to attend extra hospital appointments and now through the law here in Scotland social workers have had to get involved because of fact that me & my boyf are on meth program and both have criminal records but we are keeping them happy and doing EVERYTHING asked of us so hoping they won't be in our lives for too long! just have to get through labour and the 72hrs that me & baby are required to stay in hospital after birth to monitor any symptoms baby may have but really hoping he will be strong enough to cope however I have heard stories myself both good and bad about baby withdrawing but the bad stories almost always involve mum still smoking or injecting heroin throughout the pregnancy with I can thankfully say I haven't so really hoping to be one of the lucky ones! thanks for your reply to my post coz at start of pregnancy all I could think . was what if but gladly I can say I'm almost past all that and and can't wait to meet my new son so thanks for positive feed back!!! x

I agree with this person...if you stop methadon and your pregnent.it could be realy bad for your baby.ass shity as it feels.it is to hard on the baby to quiet the methadon.but you can lower your dose....slowly ever week.giving your body and baby time to ajust to withdralls.trust me .........i know what im talking about.i've had a child born addicted to methadone.when i got pregnent i was on 160 ml of methdone and using opiets on the side in the begining of my pregnent's as sad as that is...when i found out i was pregnent..i quiet the drugs and worked with my doc...on the methdon.till i was at 15 ml.my baby had some trubles after she was born.and still strugles today.but she is a beautiful and healthy girl.going in to kindergarten september 2013.

My daughter was born addicted to methadone and i've never seen someone so small suffer the way she did. After her berth she was in the hospital for 4 months going throw withdrawn. she too had to be put on morphine to help with her symptoms. I was on 80mls........ 40mls in the morning and 40mls at night. I split up my dose's so i wasn't giving my unborn child a big dose all at once. she is now 4 1/2 yr old ,but suffers every day . she's has a really hard time with her self.she didn't walk till she was 15 months. She has trouble with bright lights and loud noise. and Struggles with concentrating on simple tasks.. It is a battle every day for her and her emotions. She has to have an added got to daycare with her to help her stay focused on simple tasks. I hope you read this and really think about methadone and pregnancy . It will be a hard battle.I know. I've been there many times. but your child is the most important thing in your life. please think about what i've sayed. Seeing my daughter suffer because of me is the hardest thing i've had to do in my live. But she is my world !!!!

I am now on 20 ml of methadone and keep tappering my dose by 20% every six days as I went to the fetal medicine specialist and he instructed me how to do so if I wanted to. Ive been doing it for months now and feel as if its been going fairly well. I cant really sleep much due to uncomfortability but dont feel it is even due to the methadone...just getting bigger and closer to the end of the pregnancy. Im eager to see how things have worked out for u and your daughter. Please respond as soon as possible. Hopefully it will ease my mind, as Ive heard a numerous amount of stories, some being good, as well as bad. Thanks...Crystal

Please...I am in a simular situation and need all the advice I can get. I went and seen a fetal medicine specialist and he had told me of a few different SAFE ways to decrease methadone while pregnant, and as I keep reading some posts...Im wondering if I shouldve just stayed on it, as everyone that is at the clinic says that u should. I dont want to watch my son go thru any withdrawl because MOM chose to make some horrible and irresponsible decisions...however, I am now on 20 going down by 2 mgs every 6 days. Please let me know hoe u made out, as maybe it could ease my mind...thanks, Crystal

You can switch over to methadone tomorrow.... You may have one or two uncomfortable days but you're good after that! Methadone is much safer and will not kill you or your baby (if pregnant), main thing being do not mix...methadone with other opiates or benzos! Actually methadone typically will not even allow you to feel affects of other opiates. Benzos though, for me, actually greatly intensified the methadone which is dangerous. Methadone alone is strong enough! Need no other drug etc. And again is soooo dangerous to do! From experience, unfortunately but honestly, I snorted heroin while on 80mg. Of methadone and felt zero affect from heroin! Switch asap. Dr. Will say be off oxy for at least 72 hrs but not necessarily true.

I was on herion for the last 10 years and like you, I too was terrified of Methadone. I finally gave in and tried methadone because lets be honest, nothing is worse than being an opiate addict. It took over my life and I lost myself for too long. I absolutly love methadone. I don't get high from it, it took away my withdraws completly and I have my life under control again! I didn't have any of the typical side affects and I'm happier now than I've ever been in my adult life! I strongly suggest that you get on methadone asap. Once upon a time when I was about your age, I started out sniffing oxy, and 10 years later I was shooting heroin. Please just try it, life is too precious to waste it on addiction! I wish someone would have told me about amethadone

Hi , I had been on methadone for 3 years but using opiates for 5 when I fell pregnant. I didn't find out till I was 5 months pregnant and I conceived within 2 weeks of being with my partner. My daughter is now five and I've been on methadone 10 years and I am only 27. My daughter was born with neonatal abstinence syndrome or in laymen s terms "withdraws". Even though I was stable on 46ml she still rattled which was difficult but argot through it and within 3 weeks she was home. I still had to medicate her with phenobarbital once home for a further 12 weeks slowly tapering the dose. It was hard but we got through it. My daughter is now a healthy normal young child. I am trying to conceive my 2nd and am currently on 90ml of methadone. We have been trying for a year but it hasn't happened and ice been fertility charting and using ovulation kits to determine the best times to do the dance lol. Anyway I wonder if it's my higher dose or if over the last 5 years methadone has started to effect my fertility. I have conceived before so I'm not.infertile and I am ovulating. Any input to my story is appreciated x

Hey Sarah, I'm in Scotland too and had my daughter 5 years ago at 21 whilst on methadone I had been on it since I was 17 and a heroin user from 15-17. I was on 40ml and had to go up on my meth as well towards the end. I was 17 weeks when I found out I was pregnant. My baby girl did withdraw even though I had not touched any illicit substances confirmed by weekly supervised samples and was stable . I think it's a hit or a miss. We got through it though. 1 week on morphine in hospital a further 2 weeks kept in for monitoring and 3 month of phenobarbital which I have her at home. I tapered her off that over 3 months it's a muscle relaxant. Whilst the babies are medicated they don't show many symptoms such as diarrhoea vomiting not feeding muscle tone tight, high pitched cry. These are what the babies will experience in the first 2 days and if they show these symptoms then they are medicated which isn't ideal but necessary. I'm trying for baby 2 even though I'm on 90ml just now but I'm away to start reducing.. as I said I'm scotland as well and even though my partner was a non user we still had "early intervention" social workers but when my daughter was 12 weeks we didn't have to see them any more just the health visitor. It may be different because both of you are on meth. I think you will have the same kind of thing as me. A case conference where the mother father and all professionals involved , midwife drug worker social work Tec come together and talk about what's best for the child and if there is any risk. Usually if you are using heroin you do not take your baby home but if both of you are stable then you will b fine. Any way just thought I'd give you my story hope it helps in some way

I am a mother of a pregnant daughter. Jessica is a herion addict but tells me she hasnt used and is on controlled methadone by her Dr. This is her 3rd child, she also has Hep.C Nobody in our family can trust or believe her. She stays away from us only talks through ph calls. Her baby is due the first part of Jan. I dont believe she is only on Methadone because the mood swings she has are the craziest I have ever seen up one minute and screaming the next. She says she is going to the clinic each morning to get her dose of methadone . My question is should there be the crazy behavior if the methadone is controlled?
