I think you're right, there's a difference between being sleepy after eating which is normal, and being excessively sleepy to the point you're afraid to drive a car, or do anything for fear of falling asleep, I have this every time I eat, no matter what I eat. And I agree it isn't normal.

yes I have the same issue. but it doesnt matter what i eat. i could eat a big salad and instantly crash. or pure sugar, balanced protein. makes no difference. its not a diet issue at all. its a reaction of the body from digestion . seems to be an overcompensation of some sort. its not normal. my wife feels more energetic after she eats and my exwife had no effect .

I see this thread has been going on for over 6 years and there have been no productive responses given during that time.. I experience this condition every day regardless of quantity, quality or type of food intake.  At times it is so bad that I just want to drop to the ground wherever I am and sleep.

I am 63 years old and do have sleep apnea.  I have had my uvula removed and use a CPAP machine which seems to help some of my sleep problems but does not alleviate the excessive drowsiness I experience after any meal.  I have also exercised 1 1/2 to 2 hours 5 days a week for the past 10 months with no improvement to my energy level (my resting heart rate has dropped 15-20 BPM though)

As I have tried to research my problem, I have looked into possible connections with other aspects of my daily life and was wondering other sufferers share other similarities.  If you suffer from excessive drowsiness after meals, do you:

1.  Have depression?

2.  Have headaches in conjunction with the drowsiness?

3.  Take significant/excessive amounts of caffeine?

4.  Take significant/excessive amounts of pain killers containing caffeine, i.e. Excedrin?

5.  Have sleep apnea or other sleep related problems?

I know this is another shot in the dark and I apologize if someone has already taken this tack (Sorry, I didn't read through all 18 pages of  comments).  I just didn't see a solution mentioned on the last page.

You are talking about me. Any time I eat lunch, (not the breakfast and the dinner) I can not open my eyes. So, I tried to take a 10 min nap, then this nap taking caused me to gain weight. Finally, I read a study that says if you have the urge to sleep after eating lunch, you have to exercise and break a little sweat after you wake up in the morning without eating any food, just glass of water before the exercise. I am sure you will feel better. Secondly; eat very small portion for lunch, and do not reach the point where your brain can feel there is enough food in the stomach. Try these methods, and good luck.

I know that you posted this years ago, but I am currently trying to research this because you put into words PERFECTLY how I'm currently feeling. I am also pregnant and have been able to find nothing on it. Were you ever able to figure out what the issue was? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

This person has no clue about siestas. In several European countries, such as Greece and Spain, it is customary to have a large lunch at home and then nap for a few hours. This is particularly the case when the fields are too hot to work in in the afternoon. They work all morning then stay indoors for noon and afternoon. It's one thing to be ignorant about other cultures, but to insist that everyone else is wrong is just obnoxious.

I am a 32 year old female, I have been feeling like this for the last 3 months, no matter what it is i eat i have this overwhelming urge to sleep, i have three children and one of them is home with me as i am a stay at home mom, obviously i cannot afford to just lay down at my leisure so for the next 3 hours after i eat i have this battle fighting sleep to make sure my son is taken care of, now just recently i have been experiencing hot flashes and dizziness, i have asked my dr and he thought it may be hormonal and placed me on a low dose birth control, which hasnt worked, Right now I am afraid of what it may be as the lifestyle changes i have made dont seem to be working, since you posted 4 years ago i am wondering has your condition worsened, got better????

My son has this; he falls right down asleep even in the middle of a restaurant.  The doctor suggested going for a short walk immediately after eating.

Not Correct really - I can tell from my personal experience that even after regular excercise even 5 days a week - doesnt realyy solve this problem. Feeling sleepy after Lunch has got nothing or almost nothing to do with Regular Excercise.
