from my research and personal experience I have so far come up with this-  forget normal or not normal, for those of us it happens to we know it is not normal for us and has very disturbing and can have a major effect on our lives.

sleeping is a reaction, sometimes to certain foods, sometimes not (research food intolerances and allergies) it usually happens with harder-to digest meals

I find it is the tip of the iceberg and happens when the body has reached a level of toxicity at which it then finds it hard to perform simple functions, like digesting food.

I realise it happens more if my diet has not been so good for a while, or I have been living in polluted environments, have not really been doing so much exercise, eating combinations of food which are incompatible and hard to digest, too much coffee or tea, dehydrated etc...

I feel food allergies are tip of the iceberg too. not the main problem, if we are toxic already the body has a pretty grumpy reaction to things it feels are just too much trouble, toxins it could probably otherwise deal with,  sugar, milk, yeast, meat, eggs, wheat..etc etc..or sometimes just digesting any food in general, proves to be too much

my theory, and my experience, to solve this problem.. is Not to fast all day and stuff my face at night.. as previously endured (this only leads to a foggier morning head)... but to  do a proper cleansing fast, one or two days (or more) on water and fresh juice, or herbal tea to detox and rest the digestive system.

then start the whole eating thing afresh, eating healthy meals, little and often.

leave toxic environment, avoid intoxicating food/drink entirely for a while, coffee bread cake meat cheese etc   do some exercise, and detoxifying things like Epsom salt baths etc  then consciously consider my environment and diet for long term health.

i used to find fasting one day a week with detox tea or juice helped keep toxin level low, as do deep breathing exercises, getting out into nature and keeping fit.

oh and keep a food diary, of experience, environment, stress level, job, location, feelings etc from bad times, through whole process to know your own body.

this is just my experience, i'm no doctor, but if it can help anyone..:-|

CORBETTY,

Yes I understand!! I have been told it happens to everyone but when all I have for breakfast is a half cup of fruit and I fall asleep. I can't stay awake. It has gotten worse over time. I have even stopped eating anything more than a single bite or maybe two at a time so I can get my housework done. I am a stay at home mom and I new there was a problem when I slept an hour after each meal and was able to get nothing done.
Please have your Liver checked and be real careful. I worry that this could really be an issue for the both of us, I will keep you in my prayers and please no somebody out there understands.

Sugar increases serotonine in the brain, which makes you sleepy.

God bless you for this post, I found it last year and because of work, I couldn't reply. Going through my archives I found it.

I FEEL it is a sort of liver problem, my eyes are kinda yellow. I resigned from my work in December 2012 so been at home, eating and sleeping away. It messed up my Bachelor in Engineering, messed up my Masters in Engineering I tried to use to cover up. Struggled at work with it depending on the kind of role I was doing. I am African. Been on since 1995 when I was 12. Got worse as I got older.

For those that call us lazy, I pray it doesn't happen to anyone you know. For all going through this, take heart, we'll pull through.

Love you all.

I started taking a B vitamin Super Complex (all the B's, C and Folic acid) at lunchtime, and that was five years ago, and I can't remember being tired after eating a lunch since... It is worth the gold urine LOL

I would suggest attending your caregiver's office for a glucose tolerance test as it is a very typical response to glucose intolerence. It's a very simple blood test. As a general rule, if your body is responding differently to anything then see your doctor. You know your own body best.

I'm researching this topic as well. Because I am pre-diabetic, I have come to the conclusion this is why I am suddenly feeling very sleepy after meals. I think it only happens when I eat foods high in carbs and high in fat. Even lean beef stew with thicken broth along will rice knock me down/make me extremely tired (like I have only had 4 hours sleep the night before).

I'm 48 and this happens to me too but its happened all of my life. About 45 minutes after eating linch I fall asleep for a few seconds and other times for a fer minutes. It's not safe for me to drive untill I hit the two houre mark. Once two hoires have passed I'm awake, energised and ready to go. I have been to many doctors includeing a sleep specialise who put me on Strattera to keep me alert but that dident work. Another Doctor had me takeing my blood suger levels after eating I would top out at 90 some days so they put me on a high proteen dier just meat and proteen shakes. It worked for a while but I'm back to sleeping again ftom 1:00 to 3:00 I feel useless. I can feem my head bobing up and down some times I get flash dreams, vivid day dreame or notice that my hearing cuts out just before i fall asleep again. Let me know if you found any answers, Untill then I'm out for coffee.

Hi,

This problem is very common and we can avoid it by following tips:

  • Eat a good breakfast.
  • Understand what it is that is probably making you feel sleepy after lunch.
  • Avoid sugar and flour
  • Eat low-crab, high-protein food for lunch.

Hi,

I have had this problem for the past 10-15 years.  I am now in my mid thirties.  Just the other day I made a bowl of coleslaw with tuna for protein.  So I have my veggies and my protein.  So I decided to eat half of it, let the food digest and eat the other half later.  And after I ate the first half about 30 mins later I was knocked out for 3 hours.  I didnt even know if it was day or night when I woke up.  I have been dealing with this since my 2nd year of college.  I still havent been able to find a solution.  But there is one way I can get through lunch and make it till the end of my working hours around 4 pm.  What I do is skip food for lunch and go to the pharmacy and get a bottle of liquid oral administration of electrolytes or you can get it in powder form.  I drink one bottle it fills me up enough to get through the next 3-4 hours until I get home and then I eat normal meal, and get knocked out for a couple of hours, I know it's not a solution but at least I can get through the work load for that day.  Hope this helps for anyone that has a job that requires for them to be present.

Its normal, you do not have to worry. It especially happens when you eat a lot. Make sure you practice the right dieting.

Don't drink cold water at mealtimes; it extinguishes digestive fire.  Room temp food and drinks is best.
